Chapter 11

Author: Chill-Free Coffee
Night had already settled when Cayce came in.

I was curled up on the bed, watching as he shut the door with a solid thud.

"What, you planning to stand there guarding the door all night after the ceremony?" I tapped the spot beside me. "Get over here."

He didn't say a word—just walked over, pulled off his robe, and let it drop.

His back was all muscle and scars—some old, some fresh. Warrior proof.

Then he leaned down, arms braced on either side of me, breath hot with cedar liquor. "Didn't someone just tell me to get in bed?"

I looked up at that jaw, sharp as ever, and reached for his ear—burning. Just like I thought.

"What?" I grinned. "Scared?"

He gave a low chuckle, then bit the corner of my lip, just enough to sting. "You're mine. What would I be scared of?"

His fingers found the ribbon of my nightdress, tugged—then stopped.

"Let me ask you something."

"What?"

"Back then... wolves say you would've died for Kain."

His fingertip brushed my collarbone. "You really done with

The morning of the Bonding Ceremony, I was up before the sun.Cayce stepped in, pushing back the tent flap, cradling a bunch of fresh Astraleaves—dewy and wild from the cedar woods. He didn't say a word. Just scooped me up and carried me straight toward the Moon Goddess statue.I glanced at him.He wasn't anything like Kain. Kain was wildfire—loud, cocky, always looking for trouble.Cayce? Ice-bound fang. Sharp jaw, blade-straight nose, eyes locked ahead like nothing could shake him.Everyone said he couldn't love. But I remembered the way he tore through the dungeon to get to me. And now, seeing that same tension in his lips, heat bloomed in my chest.Same path to the altar—but everything had changed. Last time, trailing behind Kain, my gut twisted with dread, praying he wouldn't flake. Now? Wrapped in Cayce's arms, I felt grounded. Then he stopped cold.Kain stood dead center in front of the Moon Goddess statue. Full ceremonial gear. Silvermoon groom's emblem gleaming on h

Disgust churned in my gut. I stepped back, dodging the ring like it burned."Did you forget?" I snapped. "Weren't you head over heels for Lena?"Kain scrambled up, reaching out, but Lena latched onto his arm.He barked over her, desperate—"Eve, please—it was all a misunderstanding! No one compares to you. You're the only one I've ever loved."I laughed, ice-cold."Funny. That's not what you said before. You told me once we were bonded, I needed to stay obedient. Stay quiet. And never question what you did with Lena."His face twisted, voice oozing fake regret."I was confused! I didn't mean to hurt you."Lena's tears fell like shattered glass."Kain, you said you loved me. You said I was sweeter than Eve. You promised we'd be mates after the full moon—""Shut up!"Kain backhanded her so hard her head snapped sideways—the same brutal hit I knew too well.Red welts bloomed across Lena's cheek. She grabbed her face, eyes wide, stunned."Slut," Kain snarled. "You seduced me.

Rumors in Silvermoon Pack spread faster than a rogue on the run. Some swore Kain threw down with the Alpha over me in the grand hall.Others whispered he'd been glued to Lena ever since I picked Cayce.Didn't matter. I tuned it all out.Our Bonding Ceremony was locked in for the next full moon. One morning before then, I found Cayce waiting at the edge of the training grounds. He leaned on a blade stabbed into the dirt, dew dripping off his hair.Didn't say a word for a minute. Just watched. Then, low and tight: "Everyone thinks I'm a monster. That I've killed too many."He flicked his eyes my way—cold steel sharp. "Aren't you scared of me?"I stilled, bow halfway drawn. Met his gaze head-on. "Scared of what?""Scared I'll snap one day and hurt you," he muttered, fingers trailing the blade's etched handle. "Not that it matters. Even if you were, it's too late."His lips curled into a smirk—possessive, unshakable."Whether you regret this or not, I'm not letting go. You're

At the banquet, torchlight danced along the stone walls.I scanned the crowd. No sign of Kain.I turned, berry wine in hand—and smacked straight into a solid chest. The sharp scent of pine hit me. My eyes burned.Back then, when Kain locked me in that cellar, it was Cayce who kicked the door down and carried me out—barely breathing. He was wrecked, bleeding everywhere, snarling at the wolves crowding us: "Touch her again and I'll skin you alive, bury you with her."After I died, he turned that dungeon into a bloodbath—dragged every one of Kain's dirty secrets straight to Theron.I'd already left my body by then. Just a soul watching him take on the whole pack for me.That's when it hit me—this brutal wolf had always put me first.Since I came back, that voice inside hasn't shut up: 'Choosing him is right.'Once the feast kicked off, Theron motioned for Cayce to sit at his right.Every wolf in the hall froze. That seat meant one thing—Cayce was the next Alpha. No hesitation

The second Cayce spoke, the hall buzzed like a kicked beehive. Wolves leaned in, whispering fast."How's it him?""Didn't Eve love Kain so much she nearly died for him?""Why Cayce? Is this some kind of screw-up?"Kain's face went dark. He stormed forward, voice cracking with panic. "Father, this has to be a mistake!"Theron hit him with a glare colder than midwinter, then slammed his scepter down—hard."I might be old," he growled, "but I'm not losing it. You think I'd mess up a choice that decides Silvermoon's future?"The Beta stepped up, scroll in hand. "The Alpha's word is final. Eve has chosen Cayce as her mate."Kain cut in fast, voice cracking. "No! That's wrong! Something's off!"He spun to me, desperation all over him. "Eve, tell them. You picked me. Father just—he got it twisted, right?"I gave a small smile, steady and sharp. "I chose Cayce. He's my mate now. The only one."Cayce's grip on the Moonpetals tightened—just barely. When our eyes met, something flicke
