The sharp blade cut into Dahlia's neck, leaving a thin line of blood. Seeing the blood distracted Jimmy for a moment.

Taking advantage of it, I grabbed the vase sitting by the entryway and slammed it hard against his head.

When Dahlia saw that, she kept the knife pressed against her neck.

Jimmy glanced at her, looking a little helpless, then quickl

I turned and walked out of the interrogation room, breathing heavily.Behind me, I could hear Dahlia crying her heart out. I was just as shaken inside.…The first day after the New Year's holiday, Dad's murder case officially went to trial.Jimmy and Steven were charged with multiple offenses, including murder, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Given the severity of their crimes, they were each sentenced to ten and eight years in prison. As for Dahlia, she was sentenced to three years as an accomplice to the murder. When the judge asked if she had anything else to say in her defense, Dahlia simply looked at me in the gallery, her eyes red from crying."Will, I'm sorry to you and Gordon. I know I was wrong. If I could do it all over again, I swear I wouldn't make the same mistake. I know none of this can bring your dad back, and I know it won't make you forgive me. But still, I have to say it."Will, give your dad a proper burial. Let him rest in peace. Live

I sneered. "So, you took my dad as a stand-in for Jimmy."Dahlia shook her head. "No… At first, I really just mistook him for Jimmy. I thought he was the man I loved… But after Gordon and I started dating, I found out he wasn't. By then, your dad was already planning to marry me. He treated me so well, so well that I couldn't bring myself to turn him down."You know what your dad was like. He gave me everything he had. He would've given me everything in the world if he could."Meanwhile, Jimmy was in prison. Even if he got out, I wasn't in contact with him. I didn't know where he was. I couldn't spend the rest of my life waiting for him. So, in the end, I married your dad."I never regretted our marriage. Not even once! Gordon was so good to me. I had so many friends, and every single one of them envied me… I really did want to grow old with him."I couldn't pretend it didn't affect me, hearing Dahlia tell me about a past I'd known nothing about. But at that point, I could tell sh

"Get down! Hands on your head!"I finally let out a huge sigh of relief when the cops rushed in with their guns drawn. Before I followed them into the neighborhood, I'd made sure to have a backup plan because I was afraid I wouldn't find the truth. Even more, I was afraid something might happen to me.So, when I ran into an old man scavenging outside the neighborhood, I gave him 200 dollars and asked him to do me a favor, telling him there was a police station right across the street. I asked him to call the cops if I hadn't come out of the house after ten minutes. When everything had gone down just now, I'd already been prepared for death. But luckily, I'd made another plan. The old man had called the cops.Jimmy and Dahlia were both taken to the police station. Steven, who had left with the movers, realized something was amiss and ran. After investigating, the police quickly cracked the case. Steven was also arrested and brought in.Dad had indeed died four days earlier. Jimmy

"I'm not planning to kill him anymore. You can put the knife down now."He gave Dahlia a long look before walking over and forcefully taking the fruit knife from her. Then he lit a cigarette, sat on the couch, and stared at me.Dahlia stood to the side, her hands still trembling uncontrollably."Mom…" I bit my lip. It was a long while before I managed to get my words out. "Why? Can you please tell me why? Dad treated you so well. Why did you have to hurt him?

The man standing in front of me looked exactly like Dad. But I was absolutely certain that he was not my dad. When I was five, I was playing around and accidentally jabbed my dad with the tip of my pen. It left a tiny black spot on his chin. As I grew up, I thought it was a mole. One day, while looking through some old photos, Dad brought up what had happened back then. That was when I learned it wasn't a mole at all.It was the bond between us.The man's chin was completely clean. There wasn't a mark anywhere.I leaned against the wall and held my breath, my Adam's apple bobbing on its own.A deep murderous intent flashed in the middle-aged man's eyes. "I already gave you a chance. You're the one who refused to back down. I was going to let you live for your mom's sake. I never thought you'd insist on getting yourself killed! In that case, you can't blame me."As he spoke, he clamped both hands around my throat."No!" At the sight of this, the urn in Dahlia's hands slipped and

My breath hitched, and I nearly dropped my phone.Dad wasn't dead. Then why were they lying to me? What were they trying to hide?Just a week ago, when we video-called, Mom and Dad had both said, "Will, we've got a surprise waiting for you when you come home for the holidays."But a week later, when I came home, everything had changed. Dad had faked his death and stopped answering my calls, while Mom pretended not to know me, threw me out even though I'd come home for the holidays, and left me injured. Then they suddenly decided to move away. It became obvious to me that they were trying to cut me off.Was this the surprise they had promised me? I really couldn't understand why they were doing this."Don't worry so much. I'm here. Nothing's going to happen."It wasn't until I heard Dad's voice that I realized they'd already started walking toward me. I clenched my hands and kept my head down, afraid to make a sound. Then I waited until they were a good distance away before fol
