Chapter 4

Author: Maureen Lynn
Sabrina invited hundreds of media outlets to cover the engagement party to generate buzz for the event. She also wanted to prove to the investor that the Monroe family was a force to be reckoned with.

During the party, Sabrina fixed an adoring expression on her face as she chattered endlessly to the reporters about how we were madly in love.

Meanwhile, I stood by her side emotionlessly.

Soon, it was time to show off the photos that were taken when she proposed to me. Her face twisted when the pictures appeared on the screen.

Instead of showing Sabrina and me being in love, the photos were of Sabrina and Matthew—irrefutable proof that she had cheated on me.

The photos showed Sabrina and Matthew celebrating the holidays together. There were also screenshots of their sweet conversations. A few borderline explicit photos of them being intimate with each other were also in the mix.

I grabbed the microphone from her and looked at the cameras, wiping away nonexistent tears.

"The truth is, Sabrina cheated on me three years ago. She lied to me, telling me she was going to propose on New Year's Eve. But in the end, she stood me up to spend time with her kept lover instead.

"Our relationship ended that day. Sabrina was the one who released the fake news about our engagement. She just wanted to use Lawrence Group's reputation to stabilize Monroe Group's stock market value."

Chaos erupted among the crowd the moment the words left my lips.

The camera flashes went off endlessly as the reporters eagerly bombarded us with questions.

"Is Mr. Lawrence telling the truth? Did you cheat on him?"

"Did you call off the engagement three years ago? Did this incident affect the relationship between the Lawrence and Monroe families?"

"Is Monroe Group's current circumstances as abysmal as Mr. Lawrence claims? Is the company's stock market value so low that the president has to resort to leaking fake news about getting engaged to stabilize the prices?"

The netizens also had plenty to say. Their envy for our perfect relationship morphed into hatred toward Sabrina.

Sabrina was totally helpless against the reporters' barrage of questions. She had no choice but to order the security guards to send them away.

The engagement party ultimately ended with nothing being accomplished.

Since I had exposed her ruse, Sabrina couldn't keep up the adoring act any longer either.

The moment the reporters left, she whirled on me and began interrogating me.

"How dare you, Colin Lawrence!" she gritted out. "You've ruined everything!"

I pointed at my phone and smiled. "Monroe Group's stock market value just plummeted. Your plans have fallen through."

"So what?" Sabrina exclaimed, her eyes wide. "You ungrateful fool! The investor will be arriving any minute now. Once I secure our partnership, Monroe Group's stock market value will rise again! The first company I'm going to tear down is Lawrence Group when that happens!"

Matthew chimed in, "She's right, Colin. You should apologize to Sabrina as soon as possible. I'm sure that she'll be willing to give you another chance if you admit your wrongdoing."

I chuckled. I was just about to speak when a familiar voice resounded toward us.

"Did I come at a bad time?"

Sabrina eagerly approached the woman and began fawning over her. She was just about to say something when the woman suddenly asked an incomprehensible question.

"I heard that you want to ruin my husband's company."

For Abigail's sake, I made my way to the location that Sabrina had told me to meet her at, alone. It was Sabrina's and my previous marital home."Doesn't this place look so familiar?" Sabrina asked when she spotted me, a hint of nostalgia flickering in her eyes."Where's my daughter?" I asked in a trembling voice. "Where's Abigail?"Sabrina suddenly shushed me. "Be quiet. Our daughter is sleeping," Sabrina replied in a hushed voice.I immediately noticed that something was amiss with her tone. I stared at her twisted features, not daring to do anything rash.It became blatantly obvious that Sabrina wasn't mentally stable at that moment."Can you tell me which room Abigail is sleeping in?" I asked calmly and gently, forcefully suppressing my fear. "May I take a look at her?"A happy expression broke across Sabrina's face when she realized that I was playing along with her."Sure! Follow me."Sabrina walked over to me and held my hand.I didn't shake her off this time and let

Freya shot a look at her assistant, who was standing behind her.Her assistant immediately picked Abigail up and carried her away. After Abigail was no longer within earshot, Freya approached me and pulled me behind her. She grasped my chin and scrutinized my face before pressing a kiss to my forehead. "I'm late because our dear daughter was making a fuss just now. Thank goodness you're alright.""Daughter?" Sabrina exclaimed in disbelief. "You had a daughter with this woman?"Beyond furious, she tried to shove Freya aside. However, Freya shoved her back before she punched Sabrina. Not willing to be outdone, Sabrina retaliated by aiming a powerful punch at Freya. It didn't take long before Freya and Sabrina were caught up in a scuffle.Naturally, I wasn't just going to stand on the sidelines and do nothing. I wasn't going to let Freya lose. I ran back into the office and grabbed a broom. I waited until Sabrina was distracted before hitting her with it.Sabrina hadn't been ab

I was swamped with work after returning to the country. Not only did I have to learn the ropes to take over Lawrence Group, but I was also busy acquiring other companies. It was late when I finally finished work that night. I had stayed behind to work overtime.I had just made it to the parking lot when I heard a set of footsteps approaching me."Colin, please have mercy on Monroe Group."It was Sabrina again. She continued to haunt me like a ghost.I nearly burst out laughing when I looked at her troubled but self-righteous expression."There's no way that you still believe that I came back for you, right?"I was caught by surprise when Sabrina suddenly grabbed my wrist. "Stop denying it. I know that you still have me in your heart. I found out a long time ago that you and Freya had a marriage of convenience. You don't actually love each other."I can tell that she doesn't actually care about you since she didn't accompany you when you returned to the country. You should divor

The scandal was just the beginning.Naturally, I knew that it wouldn't be enough to tear Monroe Group down. I had only exposed Sabrina's infidelity to take revenge on her.The truth was, I had put my plan of acquiring Monroe Group into motion two years ago. I was able to secretly sabotage all of the company's projects in the last six months because Sabrina's most trusted assistant, Alex Farris, was actually my subordinate.Of course, Sabrina was completely clueless about Alex's connection to me.Alex was one of the students whom I was sponsoring. After she infiltrated Monroe Group on my orders, she worked hard for a year until she was promoted to her current position.I learned about Monroe Group's projects thanks to Alex. I also learned that the company had committed tax evasion. It was just that there wasn't any conclusive evidence that would get them convicted. What I needed was a chance to acquire the evidence. It was why I dropped by Monroe Group that day, hoping to provoke

Sabrina had no idea what the woman was talking about. "Of course not, Ms. Clarkson. I was talking about ruining Lawrence Group. I wouldn't dare disrespect your husband."She watched in shock as Freya Clarkson approached me and pulled me into her arms. "Colin Lawrence is my husband!" she spat.Sabrina was gobsmacked.Meanwhile, I finally realized what was going on when I looked into Freya's eyes that were glinting with mischief. She had told me that she had a surprise for me before I returned to the country. It turned out that this was the surprise that she had been talking about.I couldn't help but burst into laughter, gently pitching Freya's cheek. I looked at Sabrina indifferently as I pulled out an acquisition contract. "Sign this.""Either let us acquire your company or declare bankruptcy. The choice is up to you," Freya said, her voice taking on a threatening edge."Why?" Sabrina demanded as she knocked the contract aside, looking utterly heartbroken. "Why are you being
