Chapter 1

The judge didn't ask anything else as he simply handed me a divorce agreement.

I had just signed it when the door opened. Vivian and Nancy walked in.

Maybe Vivian thought I was still going to fight her in court, just like I had the last six times. Her voice was cold as she said, "This will be the seventh time you dragged me to court, Landon. You really don't know when to quit."

Then, she sneered.

"But you're going to lose this time. Nancy's already eight. She has a say about who she wants to live with."

Nancy hid behind Vivian, and the way she looked at me was distant and cold. She didn't even hesitate when she said, "I want to live with Mom and Jason."

I suddenly thought of the video Jason Reed had sent me the night before. Apparently, they celebrated New Year's Day early and already had dinner together. With how happy they looked, they were like a real family of three.

At the table, Nancy had frowned and said, "This is all Dad's fault! He makes us celebrate New Year's Day early every year."

I wanted to explain to my daughter that it wasn't true. The hearings had been pushed back to New Year's Eve every year because Vivian claimed she could not get away from work. I hadn't done it on purpose.

But then Nancy rambled on, "After all these years, he's still so attached to us like some crazy person. I hate having a dad like that… It would be so much better if Jason were my dad."

At that moment, I stopped wanting to explain.

Everything I did for the trials in the past six years felt like a joke. As it turned out, the daughter I fought for didn't want to stay with me, and she certainly didn't see me as her dad.

So, when Nancy said to my face that she wanted to live with her mother, all I could feel was a dull ache in the chest.

"It's fine," I said. "I'm here to withdraw my petition anyway. I don't want you anymore, either."

Nancy's eyes instantly reddened with anger as if she didn't expect me to say that.

"You're lying! If you really didn't want me, you wouldn't have brought Mom to court!"

I took out the signed divorce agreement and then pointed to the line where I had voluntarily given up custody.

"I just signed it," I said, my voice cold. "I forgot to tell you that you didn't need to come to court today."

Vivian clearly had not expected me to have already finished signing the agreement. It took her a long time to speak.

"Have you thought this through? Once we're divorced, it won't be easy for you to see Nancy after this."

I nodded.

Vivian and I had been married for nine years. By the third year, we were already arguing about the divorce because of Jason.

I had fought for six full years for Nancy, all because she had cried and begged me to stay in her broken voice when she was two.

However, so much has changed in the past six years. My daughter was not the only one sick of it. I was tired, too.

So now, I handed the divorce agreement to Vivian.

"Sign it."

I'm giving you your freedom back.

Right before my flight took off, my phone was suddenly filled with missed calls. I didn't answer any of them. Instead, I snapped the SIM card in half and threw it into the trash bin.As soon as I got off the plane, I finally saw my mom, whom I hadn't seen in person for seven years. She looked much older than she had in our video calls, or maybe she had been using a filter.Suddenly, my tears wouldn't stop. She only patted my back and comforted me. "Come now, why are you crying so suddenly? Did you miss me that much? Whatever it is, we can talk about it after this."I leaned into her arms, and my long-drifting heart had finally settled. That's right… I still had somewhere who would let me make mistakes. In this world, there was still someone who would always love me.Before going home, I went with my mom to shop for our delayed New Year's Day dinner. While we were on our way, she didn't ask what had happened or why I had suddenly stopped fighting for custody.Out of curiosity,

After speaking to me, the nurse probably told the others what I had said. As a result, several young nurses give weird looks at Jason and whisper. When one of them was changing Jason's bandage, she even pressed it hard on purpose. "Sorry about that," she said sarcastically. "I'm still new here, so I'm still learning to gauge my strength. But even if I'm bad at my job, at least I know what I should do and what I shouldn't."Jason knew right away that she was talking about him.So on the day I was about to be discharged, Jason finally couldn't hold back and came to see me. When we were alone, he dropped the act completely. "Landon, are you still holding a grudge against me? After all these years, are you still going to get me into trouble wherever I work? Will you only be satisfied when everyone knows about me and Vivian?"I kept packing my things without explaining a word.Maybe it was my indifference that triggered him, or maybe it was the nurses' mockery over the past few

Back then, I spent every day in a daze.I tried everything I could to expose what had happened. I even made PowerPoint slides and sent them to their company chats at Vivian's and Jason's workplaces.I did manage to get Jason fired, but Vivian was the company CEO. With one word from her, every employee in the company shut their mouths. Anyone who leaked a word about it would be fired on the spot.Later, people started spreading rumors that Vivian's husband was insane. They said I was paranoid and delusional.I couldn't beat them. Meanwhile, my head hurt so badly it felt like it would split open, and I could not sleep all night. After that, I was diagnosed with severe depression, and I wanted to end it all several times. But when I looked at Nancy who was only two years old at the time, I couldn't bear to leave her behind. My condition kept getting worse, to the point that even the slightest argument or noise would make me irritable for no reason. For Nancy's safety, Vivian sugge

I stayed in the hospital for some time.Sometimes, I would run into Vivian. However, neither of us greeted each other or said a word, as if we had made a tacit agreement. Nancy tried to talk to me several times, though, but I ignored her.One day, she suddenly slipped an envelope with money into my pocket. "It was my fault for lying to you last time. This is my apology."I threw the envelope onto the floor and said these words: "I don't need it."Nancy's eyes reddened. Maybe because I angered her with my attitude, but she had forgotten something. She had treated me the same way over the past few years whenever I gave her a present on New Year's Eve. She had even thrown them into the trash right in front of me.And now, she couldn't stand how I was treating her the way she had treated me?How laughable.Vivian happened to see it."Why do you have to lose your temper to a child?" she demanded with a frown. "What happened between us has nothing to do with Nancy. Despite eve

When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.It seemed like I had been saved after all.The nurse beside me said, "Your medical bills haven't been paid yet. You should contact your family first."I smiled bitterly and shook my head. What family?"Can you pay them for me for now?" I asked.A trace of hesitation appeared in the nurse's eyes, but after I pleaded with her, she finally agreed. When she was going to leave, she still couldn't help but ask, "Weren't the woman and the girl in that hospital ward of your family? The girl even called you Dad."I shook my head again.Just as the footsteps faded into the distance before returning, the door closed for a moment before being pushed open again.Vivian's voice came from above me, her tone cold and full of suspicion. "Did you purposely avoid taking your asthma medication? It was right there in your bag."I said nothing. I remembered Vivian had learned I had asthma long ago. She had even promised that she would check m

When I heard Vivian screaming at me, I suddenly remembered my wedding with her. Vivian had sworn through tears that she would treat me right for the rest of her life. My only best man at the time, Jason, had warned her in all seriousness that he would never forgive her if she ever mistreated me.But now, the two people who had once mattered most to me had both betrayed me.Then… What was I supposed to be?At the thought of that, I couldn't help raising my voice."I have gone mad! My wife cheated on me with best childhood friend six years ago, and now even my daughter wants to call him Dad and toy around with him! How do you expect me to stay calm?"Vivian fell silent for a moment. When Jason saw that, he immediately put on a saddened look. "Landon, I'm sorry. I've felt guilty about what happened all these years. If it helps you let out your anger, you can hit me or yell at me. Take it all out on me."As soon as he finished speaking, Nancy stood in front of him to protect him.
