Chapter 3

Penulis: Eggs Tomato
Moira's voice grew softer as she spoke, and she sounded a lot more guilty, too.

The man who'd been quiet at her side suddenly intervened, as if to remind us of his presence. He wrapped an arm around Moira as he said gently, "Sorry about all this, Liam. I only asked that Moira help me with this favor, but nothing's going on between us.

"Please don't get the wrong idea. Once my parents go home, we'll show up at your place to thank you properly for helping us out."

Noah's explanation was seamless, as if he truly had asked Moira for an innocent favor. But it wasn't hard for me to hear the smug undertone of his words.

An awkward look flickered past his features when he registered my silence and grim expression.

When the tension got too much for Moira, she made to speak, only for Noah to raise a hand and stop her. "It's only normal for you to be upset, Liam. After all, I didn't ask you for permission before I pulled Moira into this.

"I don't want to come between you and Moira, either. So, how about I offer you my sincerest apologies?"

With that, he made a point to bow his head at me in deep apology and said sorry to me over and over. He looked distressed when I didn't respond.

A moment later, he seemed to have made up his mind. He said emphatically, "You must forgive me, Liam, or I'll never live this down. I'll… I'll get on my knees and ask for your forgiveness!"

Looking resolute, he began to lower himself on his knees as he spoke.

Beside him, Moira grew antsy and quickly reached out to pull up Noah, sympathy flooding her gaze. She turned to level a disapproving look at me. "Are you done here, Liam? Noah's already gone to lengths to apologize to you. Aren't you going to say something?

"Are you always this heartless? It's no wonder you grew up unloved, and your parents left you in your grandmother's care!

"I'm so disappointed in you, Liam. A heartless, apathetic man like you doesn't deserve to be loved!"

When she finished speaking, she grabbed Noah by the arm and turned to leave. She took a few steps, then, seemingly remembering something, suddenly stopped in her tracks.

Shooting me a glance over her shoulder, she heaved a sigh of grim resignation. "Then again, with your naturally poor social skills, I doubt you have friends in this city. I'll wire you some cash later so you can put yourself up in a motel somewhere.

"For the next couple of days, don't call me unless I call you first. I told you I'm busy."

Moira spun on her heels after that and left without turning back, pulling Noah alongside her.

I stood in place and watched as her figure grew smaller in the distance. My heart twisted with a sudden, seizing pain, and I felt as if all the strength had been drained from me.

I couldn't hold it together anymore. Clutching my chest, I doubled over with agony shining in my eyes.

When I told Moira the things I'd gone through growing up, she'd looked sympathetic and reassured me that none of those were my fault, promising me that she'd love me fully.

I never thought she would one day turn my confessions into a knife and stab me with it. It hurt me more than I could ever imagine.

I didn't have naturally poor social skills, nor was I without friends.

After we started dating, Moira had told me that my female friends made her insecure, so I deleted their numbers in front of her. After that, she asked that I spend all my free time with her and told me she didn't like it when I hung out with my buddies. So, I gradually cut them off.

I spent these years pouring my heart into my job, heeding Moira's every word about everything. But I never thought she would put me down like that in the end.

My phone suddenly chimed with notifications.

"Hey, Liam. It's Noah. Moira's picking out presents for the baby's one-month birthday. She told me to send you some cash for your motel stay."

I quirked my mouth to the side and clicked on the message from PayPal. Liam had sent me 50 dollars.

It wasn't long before Liam sent me another voice note: "Moira said 50 dollars should be enough for you to get a motel room somewhere. She said you'd be fine… After all, you've slept in worse places, like next to a dumpster…"

I only smiled at Robin's complaints. After all, I trusted him to be discreet in his profession.I graduated with a doctorate three years later. On the day of my graduation, I met Moira again. She was holding a floral bouquet as she approached me with a warm smile. "Congratulations on your graduation, Liam.""Thanks," I said politely, keeping my tone formal and distant. I didn't take the flowers she handed me and made to leave. But when I brushed past Moira, she reached out to grab me, her fingers digging into my arm. "Can we talk, Liam?"I looked at the crowd that had gathered around us to spectate this confrontation and sighed. I followed her to a quiet corner."Liam, how have you been the last three years? It's been terrible for me, in case you're wondering. I hadn't realized how important you were to me until you left."I know I wronged you deeply, Liam. Could you give me a second chance? I promise I'll love you with my whole heart."Look at this, Liam. I thought I'd lost our

But it didn't matter anymore. Moira could love whoever she wanted. Not a minute later, Moira hurried back from the bedroom. "Honey, there's an emergency at the company I need to take care of right away."A chuckle escaped me as I watched Moira lie without even batting an eye. "Alright, go ahead."Upon hearing this, she shot me a grateful look. She leaned forward to peck my cheek, but I quietly dodged her."Go on, then. That emergency won't take care of itself." I rose from my seat and headed for the kitchen. I didn't even spare Moira a second glance.Moira hid the disappointment in her eyes and replied gently, "Okay. I'll be right back. We'll leave for our date as soon as I'm home."I made no reply. This time, I wouldn't wait for her.I watched her hurry out the door and felt something like relief wash over me.After Moira left, I hailed a cab to take me to the airport. Along the way, Moira wouldn't stop texting me."I'll be right back, honey.""By the way, honey, I got you a

Perhaps taken aback by my apprehension, Moira simply gaped at me, disbelief clear in her eyes. "Honey, you…"As she trailed off, her eyes turned red with fresh tears. She looked at me dejectedly. "Tell me honestly, honey, have you stopped loving me? Your attitude toward me has changed a lot this trip home. Why is that?"I already told you what happened between Noah and me. Are you still angry about it?""No, I'm just tired." I closed my eyes after that. She shed tears beside me, but I ignored her.In the past, I would have gotten up, pulled Moira into my arms the moment she teared up, and lovingly consoled her. But now, all I really wanted was to get some sleep.Moira must have thought I'd dozed off, for she lay beside me and gazed upon my side profile. She muttered under her breath, "I know I crossed a few lines this time, honey, but I promise to cut ties with Noah from now on."Oh, and haven't we always talked about doing stuff on our bucket list together, honey? We'll cross th

Moira didn't wait for me to respond before she hummed a lighthearted tune and padded over to the kitchen.I entered the study, opened a drawer, and took back Grandma's bracelet. After putting it away, I looked around the room and realized with a start that the study had undergone some major changes. My wedding photo with Moira had been taken down, replaced by a family portrait of her, Noah, and Beatrice.Moira returned to the study and found me spacing out before their family portrait. She followed my gaze, and an anxious look crossed her face when she saw what I'd been staring at.She quickly walked over to take down the photo, explaining, "Don't get the wrong idea, honey. This portrait is photoshopped. I was only helping Noah keep up with the lies he told his parents. I'll take this down right now.""Leave it. It looks nice on the wall." I took in the family portrait calmly as I said this, my gaze impassive.Upon hearing this, Moira went still. She turned to give me a baffled l

Moira's eyes turned red with tears when she heard my question. She explained anxiously, "I didn't expect the baby to come along, either. Noah and I got really drunk that one time, but I swear, honey, nothing else happened between us after that."Can you find it in your heart to forgive me just this once, honey?"I studied the woman before me who'd taken everything for granted and suddenly wanted to scoff. Why would she expect me to forgive her after she cheated on me?But now, I didn't even want to keep fighting with Moira anymore. I didn't love her, and none of this farce mattered.Moira took my silence for acquiescence. She wrapped her arms tightly around me once more and pleaded softly, "Please don't be angry anymore, honey. Please?"I didn't expect her to be so strong; I couldn't break free from her vise-like hold at all. Right now, I wanted nothing more than to get out of this suffocating room, so I gave her a vague reply. "Okay. I've got some stuff to sort out, so I'll be on

I pushed open the front door of our house to find not only Moira and her parents waiting inside, but also Noah and their infant daughter, Beatrice.Upon registering my arrival, Moira hurried forward, her gaze darting around as she grumbled under her breath, "Didn't I tell you to bring gifts? Surely you bought something. Don't tell me you came here empty-handed!"I eyed the woman before me and suddenly chuckled. "I wouldn't show up empty-handed, not after you gave me such specific instructions."Moira leveled a satisfied look at me when she heard this. "Well, someone's stepped up. That's the spirit. Now, stop being secretive and bring out the gifts."I stepped forward, took out the divorce papers from my briefcase, and set them on the table."I came here this evening to divorce Moira." As I spoke, I glanced over my shoulder at a bewildered Moira. "Come and take a look. Do you like this gift? If you do, sign the papers."When Moira finally snapped to her senses, she hurried over an
