Chapter 2

Author: Eggs Tomato
With that thought in mind, I'd gotten out of the car and lay down in the snow, letting the flurry of white flakes bury me.

Just as I was slipping into a deep slumber, a car suddenly pulled up on the snow-blanketed ground and stopped before me. A young lady hurried out of her car and approached me, dragging me out of the snow with some effort.

When I opened my eyes and met Moira's gaze, I felt as if I'd seen the light.

Moira had rescued me. She'd probably guessed at my intention to seek a cold, lonesome death, for she held on to me and talked to me through the night.

She told me, "It's wonderful to be alive. You've already arrived on this plane of existence called 'life', so you may as well learn to love, experience, feel, and admire everything joyous around you."

She also told me, "Everyone has that one tumultuous year in their lives that will turn their course toward something beautiful and liberating."

I stared at the young lady with the bright eyes and suddenly heard a voice in my head, telling me: "Keep living. Do it in Grandma's memory."

While chatting with Moira, I was surprised to learn that she was my senior in university. From then on, we got to know each other better and became close. I slowly made room for her in my heart.

On the night she graduated, I watched her dazzle at the graduation dance. For the first time in my life, I rallied the courage to confess my feelings for her in front of everyone.

When Moira nodded in agreement and beamed at me, I was so overwhelmed that I stepped forward to scoop her into my arms. I felt like the luckiest, happiest man in the world.

Moira took over her family's company not long after graduation.

The year I graduated, I made a compromise with Moira after seeing her leave for work early in the morning and return home late at night, the shadows under her eyes growing prominent with her routine.

I gave up my best career choice and arrived in the city where Moira was. I managed the company alongside her, and just like that, I worked as her secretary year after year.

During my tenure, we secretly got our marriage certificate. We never told anyone about it.

Moira claimed that her parents wouldn't let her marry a man with a mole under his eye, for some reason or other, and that she'd need some time to change their minds. She also said that if word of our relationship got out, it might jeopardize the company during its growth phase.

All I'd cared about was Moira at that point, so I believed every word she said.

In retrospect, if she'd truly loved me, she wouldn't have had such material and shallow concerns. If anything, she would have cleared every obstacle in our path.

In the third year of our marriage, Moira told me the company planned to expand its business operations abroad. After some thought, she decided I was the only one capable of executing that mission.

A simple instruction from her was all it took for me to pack up and go abroad all by myself to expand business operations there.

The snowfall grew heavier, and I instinctively lifted my gaze to the light pouring from the windows of the house in the distance. Bitterness crept up on me like vines.

I shook my head, clearing the thoughts clamoring in my mind.

I got up to leave, but no sooner had I risen on my feet than I spotted Moira holding hands with a man as they came toward me. Behind them strolled the older man whom Moira had called "Eric".

Moira froze in surprise when she saw me, too. She probably thought I'd left by now.

I couldn't hear what she turned to say to Eric, but he left with a smile. Now that it was just the three of us, Moira approached me with the man in tow.

She eyed me impatiently. "Didn't I tell you to leave? What are you still doing here? You're doing this on purpose, aren't you, Liam? You just want to get on my nerves!"

I fixed my gaze on their interlocked hands and asked in a low voice, "Aren't you going to explain yourself?"

Panic flickered in her eyes when she heard my question. She winced as she countered stiffly, "Explain myself? What for? Noah and I are just friends. What you saw at the house earlier was just an act to convince Noah's parents of his happy marriage!

"You saw it yourself—his parents are old, and we're only doing this to give them peace of mind. Why do you always have to be so unreasonable and paranoid?"

"And what about the baby? What's the story there?" I asked flatly as I assessed the obstinate woman before me.

Upon hearing this, Moira went still. When she snapped out of her daze, she stammered, "T-That baby was just a young actor we found. We figured we may as well go all out, seeing as we're acting and all…"

I only smiled at Robin's complaints. After all, I trusted him to be discreet in his profession.I graduated with a doctorate three years later. On the day of my graduation, I met Moira again. She was holding a floral bouquet as she approached me with a warm smile. "Congratulations on your graduation, Liam.""Thanks," I said politely, keeping my tone formal and distant. I didn't take the flowers she handed me and made to leave. But when I brushed past Moira, she reached out to grab me, her fingers digging into my arm. "Can we talk, Liam?"I looked at the crowd that had gathered around us to spectate this confrontation and sighed. I followed her to a quiet corner."Liam, how have you been the last three years? It's been terrible for me, in case you're wondering. I hadn't realized how important you were to me until you left."I know I wronged you deeply, Liam. Could you give me a second chance? I promise I'll love you with my whole heart."Look at this, Liam. I thought I'd lost our

But it didn't matter anymore. Moira could love whoever she wanted. Not a minute later, Moira hurried back from the bedroom. "Honey, there's an emergency at the company I need to take care of right away."A chuckle escaped me as I watched Moira lie without even batting an eye. "Alright, go ahead."Upon hearing this, she shot me a grateful look. She leaned forward to peck my cheek, but I quietly dodged her."Go on, then. That emergency won't take care of itself." I rose from my seat and headed for the kitchen. I didn't even spare Moira a second glance.Moira hid the disappointment in her eyes and replied gently, "Okay. I'll be right back. We'll leave for our date as soon as I'm home."I made no reply. This time, I wouldn't wait for her.I watched her hurry out the door and felt something like relief wash over me.After Moira left, I hailed a cab to take me to the airport. Along the way, Moira wouldn't stop texting me."I'll be right back, honey.""By the way, honey, I got you a

Perhaps taken aback by my apprehension, Moira simply gaped at me, disbelief clear in her eyes. "Honey, you…"As she trailed off, her eyes turned red with fresh tears. She looked at me dejectedly. "Tell me honestly, honey, have you stopped loving me? Your attitude toward me has changed a lot this trip home. Why is that?"I already told you what happened between Noah and me. Are you still angry about it?""No, I'm just tired." I closed my eyes after that. She shed tears beside me, but I ignored her.In the past, I would have gotten up, pulled Moira into my arms the moment she teared up, and lovingly consoled her. But now, all I really wanted was to get some sleep.Moira must have thought I'd dozed off, for she lay beside me and gazed upon my side profile. She muttered under her breath, "I know I crossed a few lines this time, honey, but I promise to cut ties with Noah from now on."Oh, and haven't we always talked about doing stuff on our bucket list together, honey? We'll cross th

Moira didn't wait for me to respond before she hummed a lighthearted tune and padded over to the kitchen.I entered the study, opened a drawer, and took back Grandma's bracelet. After putting it away, I looked around the room and realized with a start that the study had undergone some major changes. My wedding photo with Moira had been taken down, replaced by a family portrait of her, Noah, and Beatrice.Moira returned to the study and found me spacing out before their family portrait. She followed my gaze, and an anxious look crossed her face when she saw what I'd been staring at.She quickly walked over to take down the photo, explaining, "Don't get the wrong idea, honey. This portrait is photoshopped. I was only helping Noah keep up with the lies he told his parents. I'll take this down right now.""Leave it. It looks nice on the wall." I took in the family portrait calmly as I said this, my gaze impassive.Upon hearing this, Moira went still. She turned to give me a baffled l

Moira's eyes turned red with tears when she heard my question. She explained anxiously, "I didn't expect the baby to come along, either. Noah and I got really drunk that one time, but I swear, honey, nothing else happened between us after that."Can you find it in your heart to forgive me just this once, honey?"I studied the woman before me who'd taken everything for granted and suddenly wanted to scoff. Why would she expect me to forgive her after she cheated on me?But now, I didn't even want to keep fighting with Moira anymore. I didn't love her, and none of this farce mattered.Moira took my silence for acquiescence. She wrapped her arms tightly around me once more and pleaded softly, "Please don't be angry anymore, honey. Please?"I didn't expect her to be so strong; I couldn't break free from her vise-like hold at all. Right now, I wanted nothing more than to get out of this suffocating room, so I gave her a vague reply. "Okay. I've got some stuff to sort out, so I'll be on

I pushed open the front door of our house to find not only Moira and her parents waiting inside, but also Noah and their infant daughter, Beatrice.Upon registering my arrival, Moira hurried forward, her gaze darting around as she grumbled under her breath, "Didn't I tell you to bring gifts? Surely you bought something. Don't tell me you came here empty-handed!"I eyed the woman before me and suddenly chuckled. "I wouldn't show up empty-handed, not after you gave me such specific instructions."Moira leveled a satisfied look at me when she heard this. "Well, someone's stepped up. That's the spirit. Now, stop being secretive and bring out the gifts."I stepped forward, took out the divorce papers from my briefcase, and set them on the table."I came here this evening to divorce Moira." As I spoke, I glanced over my shoulder at a bewildered Moira. "Come and take a look. Do you like this gift? If you do, sign the papers."When Moira finally snapped to her senses, she hurried over an
