Chapter 1

I pressed my hand to my chest and looked past the water curtain again. Adrian was smiling, his gaze fixed on Cecilia.

So it wasn't that he couldn't smile. He just no longer wanted to smile like that for me.

I called a car and headed back to the Hayes family's seaside villa. Martha, the housekeeper, saw how pale I was and hurried over. "Ma'am, are you feeling unwell again? Should I call Mr. Hayes?"

"No." My throat was so dry it ached, and my voice barely came out. "Is Ella asleep?"

"She is. She waited for you and Mr. Hayes all evening. She only just drifted off."

I didn't have the energy to respond. I gripped the banister and made my way upstairs to the bedroom. When the tideheart scale flared, plain water could only dampen the skin temporarily. It couldn't stop the moisture from draining out of my body.

I filled the bathtub with warm water and poured in an entire jar of sea salt. The moment I lowered myself in, my chest felt as though red-hot needles were piercing it all at once. I curled in on myself and bit down hard on my lip, but I still couldn't hold back a groan of pain.

The bedroom door flew open. Adrian rushed into the bathroom. He hadn't even taken off his suit jacket. He dropped to his knees beside the tub and pulled me into his arms. "Evelyn, look at me. Can you breathe? I'm taking you to the bay clinic."

I caught the scent of perfume on his collar. Not mine. My stomach turned. Yet he looked as worried as he always did when this happened. He wrapped me in a towel and hurried downstairs with me in his arms.

I looked up and saw the ache in his eyes, and the burning in my chest actually eased, just slightly. The tideheart scale answered only to my own feelings. Even though he had already betrayed me, as long as his concern could still make me waver, the scale would never let me go.

The private clinic on Greyport's waterfront was a safeguard my grandmother had left me before she died. Inside was a sealed saltwater treatment pool. The doctor on night shift knew what I was and knew this was no ordinary dehydration.

When the seawater rose past my shoulders, I could no longer hold the shape of my legs. My silver-blue tail unfurled beneath the surface, but the tideheart scale on my chest was still cracking. The doctor hooked up my IV, then turned to Adrian. "The drip can only keep her circulation going. The seawater can only ease the physical symptoms. For the tidal decay to truly stop, she has to let go of her feelings on her own. Do you know what triggered tonight's episode?"

Adrian's shoulders went rigid. Several seconds passed before he answered quietly, "She's been working too hard. Please, treat her first."

He understood the rules governing White Tide Bay mermaids. He knew exactly what kind of betrayal would trigger an episode. But he refused to admit it, because the moment he acknowledged that my pain came from him, he could no longer explain tonight away as an innocent dinner.

Then his phone rang. Only one name lit up the screen. Cecilia.

He stepped outside to take the call. When he came back, he wouldn't meet my eyes. "Evelyn, something urgent came up on her end. I need to run over there. I'll send the driver to take you home later."

I reached out of the water and caught his wrist. For the first time, I swallowed my pride and begged him. "Don't go tonight. I can't even get out of the water right now. Just stay with me until the tidal decay eases a little. Please."

Cecilia's call came through again. Adrian bent down, kissed my forehead, and slipped his wrist from my grasp. "I'll be right back."

He didn't come back. He didn't even look back.

The tideheart scale cracked open again. Pain spread from my chest all the way down my tail. The seawater held my body afloat, but my fingertips were still losing warmth from the dehydration.

Adrian and Cecilia had only been together for five years. I had loved him since I was fifteen. For fifteen full years.

Fifteen years ago, I was the poorest, most invisible transfer student at the White Tide Bay school. My accent, my secondhand clothes, and my coastal roots made me a target every single day. Only Adrian ever stepped in front of me, pulled me out of the crowd, and told me that where you come from doesn't decide where you end up.

After that day, his hand became my anchor. And little by little, gratitude turned into love.

Martha's call broke through my memories. "Ma'am, Ella's awake," she said urgently. "She keeps asking for you and Mr. Hayes."

I glanced at the IV bag, still half full. I hesitated, then dialed Adrian. Ella was his daughter. I thought he wouldn't abandon his child, at the very least.

The call connected, but it was Cecilia's voice that answered, laced with amusement. "Miss Whyte, Adrian has already fallen asleep beside me."

She used my maiden name on purpose, then added slowly, "In love, the one who isn't loved is the real other woman. A marriage certificate doesn't change that."

In the background, Adrian's drowsy voice drifted through. "Cecilia, who is it?"

"Just the office. Nothing important."

I gripped the phone until my nails dug into my palm. "Miss Roland, I'm the one he's legally married to. You can lie to yourself all you want, but you can't change the fact that you came between a husband and wife."

Cecilia didn't respond. I hung up. Winning that exchange brought me no comfort, because I already understood that the law could make a marriage official, but it couldn't keep a man whose heart had moved on.

All I could do was soothe Ella over a video call. The IV drip beside the pool hadn't finished yet, but the driver was already waiting at the clinic entrance. Adrian sent a belated text: "Feeling better?"

I didn't answer right away, the way I always used to. Back at the villa, I looked in on my sleeping daughter first, then went to the study and drafted a divorce agreement.

Cecilia pushed the script toward me. "This isn't a bargaining chip. It's restitution. You don't have to accept my apology. You can still keep it."She admitted she had once looked down on me for coming from a remote bay. She had been jealous that I could stand on my own without any family connections. She also admitted that she was the one who had broken up with Adrian years ago. When none of the men after him measured up, she mistook wounded pride for love."I thought if I got rid of you, he'd love me again." Cecilia let out a rueful laugh. "But after he truly lost you, he wouldn't even look at me. That's when I realized I wasn't fighting for him at all. I just couldn't accept that someone I'd once looked down on was doing better than me."I looked at her. "Adrian isn't as perfect as you imagine. You've just never been willing to take him off the pedestal you put him on. Love is only one part of life. Finding it is a gift, but not having it is no reason to sacrifice your dignity or yo

When Adrian rose to his feet, I barely recognized him. He was much thinner than before, with dark circles under his eyes. His suit was still immaculate and expensive, but it couldn't hide the exhaustion of chronic insomnia.Colleagues glanced over from every direction. Adrian seemed not to notice. He spoke stiffly. "Evelyn, I've missed you. I've missed Ella.""Ella and I haven't missed you."He stepped forward and took my hand, his voice so low it was almost a plea. "Come back to Greyport with me, please. I've cut Cecilia out of my life completely, and I've restored all your credits. I can't live without you."I pulled my hand back. "The night of our anniversary, when you declined my calls to have dinner with Cecilia, there was already no going back for us. And when I was immersed in the saltwater treatment pool, unable even to get out, I begged you to stay, but you still went to her."Adrian's face went white. "You've known since that night?""Yes. I also know you gave her my project

The boat reached Northshore before dawn. I shifted back to my legs before we entered the harbor, took Ella by the hand, walked off the dock, and settled into the seaside rental my lawyer had arranged. It was close to a school, with a quiet path from the back door leading straight to the bay. And it wouldn't show up on any property records for Adrian to trace.Once Ella was settled, I opened social media. Sure enough, Adrian had handled the company crisis and publicly admitted his wrongdoing. But those belated statements meant nothing to me.At first, all I had wanted was to use his guilt to secure some financial safety for Ella and me. I hadn't planned to release everything. What pushed me past the point of mercy was watching him stay silent while strangers called his daughter a bastard.I could take the attacks on myself. Ella couldn't. As a mother, I had to protect her first. And as Evelyn, I had to pull myself out of a marriage that kept hurting me.After my grandmother died, no one

Adrian had planned to quiet the backlash first, then cut ties with Cecilia for good.He had always believed he still loved Cecilia and that Evelyn would never leave. But over these past weeks, the woman who was too proud to bow to anyone had suddenly turned gentle, and instead of putting him at ease, it only made him more uneasy. He knew perfectly well that when a White Tide Bay mermaid stopped fighting, it was rarely forgiveness. It usually meant the tideheart scale had drained the last of her love, and she was preparing to leave. The recording, original files, and complete footage Mia released spread across the internet in hours. The truth could no longer be suppressed: the CEO of Hayes Pictures had stripped his wife of her project for his ex-girlfriend and stood by while his ex smeared his own daughter. Public outrage turned into boycotts. The stock price dropped day after day, and shareholders demanded Adrian explain himself immediately.Hayes Group was a family legacy built over g

I opened my laptop, typed up my resignation, and planned to submit it as soon as I finished tying up loose ends.Mia told me with red-rimmed eyes, "Cecilia's been going around the office all morning saying she and Adrian are the real love story and you're the one who came between them. You got to where you are on your own. They can't match you, so they're spreading lies about your background and your marriage."I wiped away her tears. "They can't erase my work. All they're doing is exposing their own lack of character. Don't lose your job over people like that."Adrian and Cecilia soon walked over. He handed me the Tides' End script. "Cecilia is new to the industry and still learning the ropes. Stay on and guide her through the project. Your name will still be on the final credits."Cecilia smiled with studied innocence. "Evelyn, I didn't mean to take your project. It's just too important for the Roland family. You're so talented. There'll be other opportunities for you."Adrian took m

The next morning, Ella rubbed her eyes and threw herself into my arms. "Mommy, how come Daddy still isn't home?"I smoothed down her messy hair. I struggled with it for a long time before I finally asked, "If Mommy and Daddy don't live together anymore, would you want to come with Mommy?"It was a question no four-year-old should ever have to face. I regretted it the moment it left my mouth. But Ella thought about it seriously, then wrapped her arms around my neck. "Daddy's really good to me. But if Mommy wants to leave, then Daddy must have made Mommy sad first. I'll go with Mommy."I held my daughter tight, and my tears fell onto her soft pajamas. After leaving her with her tutor, I pulled myself together and went to the office. The moment I arrived at Hayes Pictures, I was called into an emergency meeting.Adrian sat at the head of the conference table with Cecilia at his right. Without any preamble, he announced, "Effective immediately, Cecilia Roland will direct Tides' End. We'll
