Before taking over the next shift, I receive a huge amount of money from my work buddy, George Rowland. He has given me ten thousand dollars in total, and the remark on the transfer notes that it's the payment for the morning shift I've taken for him. "Hey Wilbur, I'm going back to my hometown and enjoy my new retired life. Have fun dealing with the night shift at the control room by yourself. "When I was patrolling the apartment yesterday, I got my hands on treasure that came out of nowhere. Now that I'm rich, I no longer have to deal with the residents anymore." With a grin, I curse George out for being unusually lucky. That guy is so stingy that he refuses to even buy himself a bottle of mineral water that's worth two dollars. To think that he actually struck the jackpot this time! I accept the money happily, thinking that I should take my younger sister out for a nice dinner once I get off work. Ten minutes later, George sends the clock-off photo of him handing the shift over to me on the work chat as usual. His caption reads, "I've gone through my final shift properly." The moment I make out the photo, I feel the hairs on my back rising. "Hello? Is this the police? A murder has taken place in Riverside Residences!"

As my cheek was pressed down against the console, I looked up, directing my gaze toward the fire alarm button. Tom followed my gaze, noticing the glass cover over the red fire alarm button. A grin spread across his face. "Want to press it, don't you? Triggering a false fire alarm is a good way to get yourself locked back up." My lips curled up in a bloody smirk. "No," I replied. My voice was distorted by the pressure that was on me. "I wasn't thinking of pressing it."Without warning, I lifted my head and thrashed violently. The burly man in the black jacket lunged forward, trying to use his weight to pin me down. His shoulder slammed through the glass cover in the process. The blare of the fire alarm tore through the night. The entire residential complex's PA system was activated. A pre-recorded evacuation message was supposed to follow, but a mechanical female voice played through the speakers instead."Grade-A human tissues as raw materials from a basement freezer storag

They made me lose both my place of residence and my income, but that was not all. I also received a photograph from an unknown number.Winnie was walking through the school gates with a backpack. Behind her were two men in baseball caps, following her.I tightened my grasp on my phone till my knuckles cracked. Tom was forcing me to show my hand. He was aware that George left something behind, while I was the last person George contacted before he died. What should I do about the key that George gave his life to protect? If I handed it over to Peter now, it might lead to an investigation into Tom.However, given his network of connections, I couldn't be sure if this key would last till it was time for the trial. On the other hand, if I chose to investigate on my own and Tom realized what I was doing, I might never return. If that happened, what would become of Winnie?I took my phone out, wanting to call Winnie. I dialed her number but hung up after it rang thrice. What would I

My heart sank. I hurried over. An individual freezer was tucked away in a corner. Someone was lying inside it. The body had frozen stiff, and it had turned blue. The person's face was frozen in a permanent expression of terror right before they died.It was George; the real George. His right index finger was missing a joint, and the burn scar on his wrist was clearly visible. I stared at him. My eyes welled up with tears. I ran a temperature last week, and George told me to rest while he kept watch the entire night. I hadn't even had the time to treat him to a meal. Instead, I received a ten-thousand-dollar transfer from him.He thought he could make a quick buck, so he could send some money to his elder sister back in his hometown and give himself a better safety net for his later years. In the end, he lost his life in the process.I crouched down and reached out, shutting his eyes that had remained open. I thought to myself, "Rest in peace, Mr. Rowland. I will seek justice

Tom's face went pale. "Officer Garrett, what's—"However, Peter cut him off coldly, "Just cooperate with the investigation. A hazmat suit and a taser can be seen in the photo. Please come with us." Instantly, the tables were turned. With Peter clamping down on his wrists, Tom went completely stiff. His voice finally began to shake. "It's a misunderstanding. It's all just a misunderstanding!" The four security guards threw their batons aside in fright, then crouched to the ground with their hands over their heads. Peter disregarded Tom's pleas, keeping his eyes fixed on the vague silhouette that had been enlarged. "This person by the glass window on the door to the freezer is in a full hazmat suit, holding a high-voltage taser." In a frigid voice, Peter questioned, "Riverside Residences is just a regular residential area. Why would there be hazmat suits or police tasers here?"Tom broke out in a sweat. "P-P-Perhaps he was a repairman from elsewhere—" I let out a scoff, i

I acted as if I was guilty, greedy, and terrified. I whisked the insulated lunchbox up and held it in my arms, saying, "I understand, Mr. Frost. I didn't actually see anything. Mr. Rowland has returned to his hometown, and I actually got that ten thousand dollars as a loan from him. "I will pay it

The outfit George had on in the video was identical to the outfit he had on in the photo he shared earlier. However, this didn't make sense. Logically speaking, if he had already resigned from his job, he should have returned his security uniform to the company. There was no way he could be weari

"Step back, everyone! Open the door!" Peter Garrett drew his gun from his holster, and two police officers pushed open the metal doors to the walk-in freezer. A wave of biting cold hit them square in their faces. The freezer unit's compressor continued in a dull, heavy drone. There were no blood
