Chapter 1

"I fucking hate you." I hissed as the chains holding me tightened the more I pulled on them.

"Sure you do baby. I hate you too." His cool demeanor just proved that he truly was cold. "If you would just behave I wouldn't have to punish you. Kaydence all I want is for you to be safe."

"If that's true then why don't you just let me go. I am eighteen now you don't owe my parents anything else. I am in more danger with you." I watched his eyes as they casted down at me like I was just a piece of property to him. His muscles flexed under his tight shirt and his jaw tightened.

"Do you really believe that the only reason I keep you here is because of your parents? I am Damion Night I don't do anything for anyone unless it benefits me and my family. Think about that the next time you want to kill one of my guards and try and run away." With that he turned his back on me and stalked out of the basement.

God damn it Kaydence you are weak. Getting caught because you ran the wrong way. I have been here long enough I should know my way around by now. Damion Night has been my home for four years now and it has been hell since day one. My first night here he lost his temper with me because I wouldn't stop crying.

He didn't hurt me but he yelled at me to shut the fuck up and told me that if I didn't he would lock me in the dark until I did. I was only fourteen and had just lost both my parents. Fucking prick. It makes me hate him more every time I think about it. Damion wasn't but a few years older than me but he was the head of one of the biggest mafia families this side of New York.

I guess I should have expected the coldness from him though. He had been pushed into taking over the family before he had even had time to enjoy life. Not that he would have done anything to wild but he was only nineteen when he took over. The night I lost my parents he lost his father as well. In fact we had lost alot that night.

Flashback...

"Kaydence sweetheart I need you to get up." I looked up at my mother who was standing over me. I tried to roll over and pull the blankets over my head but there was a loud explosion outside. I jumped up quicker than I ever had almost taking my mother down with me.

"What the hell is going on?" My father came into the room blood running down his arm. "Dad!"

"Forget it we are surrounded. Kaydence go to your hiding spot now." I knew better than to talk back but as a headstrong teenager I couldn't help it.

"No I want to help." I reached under my pillow and grabbed the gun that I had been given. My mother's eyes went huge.

"Where the fuck did you get that?" My dad asked as he grabbed it from me.

"Damion gave it to me when I finished my gun training the other day. He told me to keep it with me at all times." My father cursed under his breath and then looked at me as gun fire started coming from downstairs.

"Damn it. Here take it back but get in your fucking hiding spot and don't come out until I come for you. I mean it Kaydence. I can't worry about you." I saw the look in his eyes and I knew this was bad. I nodded and took the gun back from him. I pulled the door open to my closet and slid the wall open.

Once I was inside I took one last look at my parents and prayed that we would be ok. I slid the wall close and heard my mother close the closet door. It wasn't long after that I heard gunfire ring out just outside my bedroom door. I scooted back further into my hiding spot and pointed my gun at the wall. If by some chance they did figure out how to get in here I would be ready.

I heard my mother scream out as one last gunshot was heard. I wanted to go out and help my mom but I knew my dad would have my head if I did. I sat for what seemed like hours waiting. The house had gone deathly quite and I didn't know what was happening. I just kept telling myself that dad would be back to get me. I must have fallen asleep because I woke to voices outside my closet door.

"How many?" I recognized Damion's voice immediately. But I stayed still.

"With Josh and his wife that makes ten." No they were talking about my parents. I heard something slam against the wall.

"Wait where is Kaydence?"

"She isn't in the house."

"Look everywhere make sure she isn't here." I was now in tears and couldn't even move. My parents were both gone.

"Kaydence come out here." Damion's voice was just outside my hiding spot. "I can hear you crying Kaydence and I don't have patience for this right now." I slowly slid the wall open and climbed out. Damion stood in front of me covered in blood. His arm was gushing it and I just kicked into survival mode.

I walked past him into my room and stopped as I saw my mother's body on the floor. I let out a small scream and then felt strong arms wrap around me. Damion turned me into his chest and then picked me up. As we walked out of the room he yelled out letting everyone else know he had me. I put my head into his chest and just started crying.

End flashback...

I shook my head as I remembered the last time Damion seemed like he gave a shit. He had left me with some of his men once we had gotten out of the house and then when they finally took me back to him he was completely changed.

I heard the basement door open and I stood up. He walked down the stairs his boots letting me know he was coming. When he finally stood in front of me again I really couldn't believe how much things had changed since that night. His eyes were dark and cold as he pierced his lips together. His muscles were twice the size they had been then and he had way more tattoos. His chocolate brown hair was nicely cut not to long and not to short. He was any girls dream to look at but a complete ass once you got to know him.

"Are you done being a pain in the ass or am I leaving you down here the rest of the night?" His voice was deep and sent a shiver down my spine. I shook my head yes at him and he started to unhook my chains. I didn't want to spend the night in the damn basement. I would be good for now and then try to get away again.

As he unhooked the last chain I fell forward into him. His solid arms caught me before I hit the floor but I quickly pulled away from him. I noticed the hint of a new tattoo on his arm and just shook my head in annoyance. I heard him laugh as I stomped up the stairs and to my room. The man was absolutely impossible to even like a little. I took a hot shower and then climbed into my bed. I would get away from Damion Night if it was the last thing I did.

It wasn't always like this. Before that night we lost our parents Damion and I were actually pretty close. I mean we had practically grown up together. My dad was his father's second in command so we were always together. I had even had a stupid crush on him back then but now that was long gone.

Damion was always the heart throb bad boy. He was carefree and thrived on whatever danger he could find. Once he had turned sixteen though his father had sent him away for a year to live with his uncle in Italy. When he came back he was a trained killing machine. He wasn't as carefree anymore but when we would hang out I could get it to come out of him.

I rolled over in my bed and tried to forget the old Damion. That Damion didn't exist anymore. In it's place was a cold, ruthless leader. I had felt like the only reason he even kept me around was because of who my father was but he always says that's not true. Not that I believe him but sometimes I wonder.

I had never wanted to make this my life when I was growing up but my dad also knew that because of who he was I would be a target. So I had started training when I had turned ten. I trained with my dad on everything until after Damion had come back from Italy. After that my father didn't have as much time so he asked Damion to work with me.

That was probably when him and I became closer. At first he seemed irritated with having to train a twelve year old girl but as the time passed he became less irritated. I think he realized I was already trained pretty good. My dad hadn't trained me to shoot yet but he had said that was because he wasn't ready for me to handle weapons yet. Damion disagreed and trained me behind my dad's back.Ugh why can't I stop thinking about him. I rolled over again and finally fell asleep.

Damion's POV...

"That girl is on my last nerve. I swear the next time she does some stupid shit I am putting a bullet in-between her fucking eyes." I slammed my fist into the punching bag.

"What did she do this time?" Heth, my second in command, snickered as he held the bag for me.

"She fucking killed one of the guards and tried to run. I don't get why she wants to leave. I have given her anything she asks for."

"Except for freedom. Face it Damion since that night you have kept her locked up in the house. You had tutors come in so she didn't have to go back to school, you never let her go out anywhere. It's no wonder she is trying to run." I punched the bag harder and closer to his face. He wasn't lying but I didn't appreciate his truthfulness at that moment.

"Well what the fuck do you suggest I do? I can't just let her walk out the gates by herself. We all know the truth behind that night except her. I plan on keeping it that way to. Until we end the threat she has to stay safe." He just sighed.

"I know man but you have got to figure something out because if not she might just get away next time. Then what. She will be out there all alone and not even know she is in danger." He did bring up a good point. Maybe I can talk with her and we can come to a truce. She has been extremely pissed with me for over a year now and I have about had it.

It might be my fault though. She had tried to go out on a date with one of the new recruits and let's just say I didn't approve. I put a bullet in his head right in front of her. Then proceeded to walk out pulling her with me and telling everyone that if anyone had any ideas of trying to hook up with her I would do the same to them. Yeah that has to be why she is so pissed.
