LOGINMorning came slowly.
A faint ray of sunlight slipped through the curtains and rested against my face. I stirred beneath the covers, turning away from the brightness. My body felt heavy, as though sleep had barely touched me.
For a few precious seconds, I didn't remember anything.
I lay still, listening to the quiet room. There was something strangely peaceful about the silence. I almost allowed myself to drift back to sleep, hoping the heaviness in my chest would disappear when I woke again.
Then I remembered, my husband, my best friend, the betrayal I stared blankly at the ceiling as the memories came rushing back, one after another. The ache in my chest returned with them, sharper than it had been the night before.
I slowly turned my head toward the bedside table.
My phone was lying there, I reached for it with a tired hand, I noticed a message from my mother-in-law on my phone. My heart still felt heavy, but as I read her words, a small flicker of hope began to stir inside me.
I got ready quickly and booked a cap to my in-law’s place. I was shocked to find my husband and his sister waiting for me there.
The moment I stepped into the living room, my mother in-law rushed towards me and pulled me into her arms. The warmth of her embrace almost broke me and for the first time after everything fell apart I felt I wasn’t alone. Shawn was sitting unbothered .
My mother-in-law gestured for me to sit opposite her. I obeyed, my heart clinging to the small glimmer of hope her embrace had given me.
She looked at me for a long moment before finally speaking.
“Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for yourself is accept that you have already been replaced.”
That sounds like a parable and the tiny spark of hope flickered in my chest.
Then she continued.
“I asked you to come because I thought you deserved to hear this from me first. I know what my son has done to you, and I know how much you have sacrificed for this family. For nine years, you have been his wife, and I thought perhaps there was still a way to save your marriage.”
She paused for a bit , her gaze fixed on me as though she was trying to read me , her lips parted but no words came out.
“He, he.. wanted someone better,” my mother-in-law said quietly, her words cutting deeper than I expected. “Someone who could give him the life he believed he deserved.”
The word hit harder than a slap ‘“better? Than me?
I lowered my gaze, I expected something better, something different .
“What did you expect?” his sister snapped. “A man won't keep coming home to a woman who has stopped caring for herself.”
I stared at her.
She didn't stop.
“After Claire was born, you changed. You gained weight, you stopped taking care of yourself, and somehow you expected him to keep looking at you the way he did when you first met.”
My throat tightened.
For a moment, I wanted to believe them. Maybe I had failed him somehow. Maybe I had become too comfortable, too different, too distracted by motherhood to notice what I had lost. But then I remembered the nights I had stayed awake beside him when his business was failing. The sacrifices I had made. The years I had spent building our life together. I hadn't been perfect, but I had been faithful.
And suddenly, I understood. His betrayal wasn't my punishment for gaining weight. It was his choice..
“You call it marriage,” she continued, “but a marriage isn't a charity. You can't expect a man to stay faithful simply because you gave birth to his child or simply because you stayed and built with him.”
Her words pierced through me , I turned to my husband. I needed just one word , just one but he simply looked away.
Then she gave a bitter smile.
“Maybe you should stop blaming Shawn for wanting someone who still look presentable”
I was speechless. Not like I had nothing to say , just wondering if it what my years of sacrifice are worth? She's not completely wrong.
I was a young woman with a delicate beauty that was difficult to ignore. My smooth skin complemented my expressive eyes, while my long, dark hair framed a face that seemed effortlessly graceful before I got married to Shawn but after the birth of Claire I gained some weight and Shawn always reminds me that I'm still beautiful regardless, I guess he lied.
I stood up, took a deep breath and looked at everyone in the room.
“I want a divorce.”
The words fell into the silence like a final blow.
“I gave him nine years of my life. I stood beside him when he had nothing, and I stayed when things became difficult. But I can't keep pretending this marriage still exists when the man I married has already chosen someone else.”
My voice cracked, but I forced myself to continue.
“So I'm done. I want a divorce.”
Across the room Shawn let out a bitter laugh “you are not being serious”
“I have never been more serious”
“Have thought about Claire, she will ask questions”
“Oh wow, did you think about her before having an intimate relationship with my best friend?, she will ask questions and she will get answers “
For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then my mother-in-law stood abruptly, her eyes filled with something I couldn't understand—fear, perhaps.
“Must this happen?”
I picked up my bag, and walked towards the door, just before stepping out I stopped and turned back to face them
“You will hear from the lawyer” Tears welled in my eyes, but I blinked them back before they could fall. I refused to cry in front of them.
He wasn't worth my tears. Then I walked out.
……
I walked into the law office with divorce papers in my hands , nine years as Shawn's wife and the mother of his child, nine years of sacrifice, nine years of choosing everyone before myself.
Today it ended.
The lawyer didn't even look up when I entered.
“I'll like to file for a divorce” I said, placing the papers on his table
He finally glanced at me, messy and unkempt hair, faded floral dress “ ma'am can you sit, please”
I sat across the lawyer, my divorce papers spread across the desk between us
“Please stamp the paper, I'll get my husband's signature”.
“Are you certain you want to proceed?” she asked.
I nodded. “I've made up my mind.”
She opened the file and began reviewing the documents. For a moment, her expression remained neutral. Then it changed.
I frowned. “What is it?”.
I drove straight to Shawn’s house. The familiar gates opened slowly, revealing the house I had called home for nine years. Nothing had changed. The trimmed hedges, the stone pathway, even the porch light I had once complained about replacing still stood exactly where it had always been.I parked my car and sat behind the wheel for a moment, staring at the front door. This was the place where Claire had taken her first steps. The place where Sean and I had celebrated our first anniversary, built our business from nothing, and promised each other that we would grow old together.I pushed the door open without knocking, the sight that greeted me stopped me in my tracks.Eva, my childhood best friend, was sitting beside Shawn with her head resting comfortably on his lap. His fingers were tangled in her hair, moving through it with a tenderness I hadn't felt from him in months. For a moment, neither of them moved.“Wow, Shawn , just wow” a slow, bitter smile spread across my face as I bega
Later that day, my mother came to the hospital with my daughter. The door opened slowly, and I looked up.My mother stood there, one hand gripping the strap of her handbag. Beside her was Claire, holding tightly to her hand. The moment Claire saw me, she let go of her grandmother and rushed to my bedside.“Mommy!”I barely had time to sit up before she wrapped her arms around me.I pulled her close, burying my face against her hair. Her familiar scent filled my lungs, and for a moment, I forgot about the hospital, the divorce, and everything that had happened.“You scared me,” Claire whispered. “Grandma said you were sick.”“I’m okay, sweetheart.” My voice came out weaker than I intended. “See, Mommy is okay.”My mother walked toward me slowly. Her eyes moved over my pale face, the IV attached to my hand, and the medication sitting on the bedside table.“Oh, my child,” she pulled me into her arms.“ “Look at me. Look at me,” she insisted, gently gripping my jaw and gently turning my f
She slowly removed another document from the folder.“There is something you need to understand before we file.”My stomach tightened. “What?”“According to these documents, you are not listed as a beneficiary or co-owner of several of the properties you believed belonged to both of you.”I found it hard to believe what I had just heard “What do you mean?”She turned the document toward me. “The house you lived in, the investment accounts, and two of the company's properties were transferred into separate entities before your husband filed the necessary documents.”My mouth went dry.“But we built those things together.”“I understand,” she said gently. “But legally, you don't have any right to claim them as yours”I shook my head, refusing to believe it. “No. We were married for nine years. Surely I'm entitled to something.”My throat tightened. I turned my face away before the lawyer could see me break; he didn't even think of Claire, our daughter.“You may have marital claims depen

I didn't almost stand up, I wiped my tears with my trembling hands and walked towards the door. When I opened it , my heart stopped .It’s Eva, coat on - suitcase in one of her hands and handbag on the other hand. My gaze fixed on hers..“What are you doing here?”I came for him," Eva said a smug taunting smile played on her lips, "my baby."I stared at the suitcase, then at Eva’s face waiting for the punchline that didn't come."You're joking," I said."I'm not." Eva picked up the suitcase like this was the most reasonable thing in the world and walked in looking everywhere as though she was searching for something.“Get out of my house, Eva”“ Your house, really?”Upstairs, a door opened. Shawn appeared at the top of the stairs, and for the first time all night, he looked something other than certain. He looked at Eva. He looked at the suitcase. He looked at me."Eva, what are you doing—"“I'm moving in, baby”“ Moving in?”“Yes, after all this is going to be my home opps this is my
A notification dropped on my phone“Hey bestie, Happy anniversary”I stared at the words, unable to breathe. My fingers tightened around the phone as the painful images of her and my husband flashed through my mind again. Then another message appeared.“Nine years already. Can you believe it?.That wasn’t a congratulatory message. It was a deliberate jab. But how could she be so cruel ? My mind went blank. I had absolutely nothing to say, I swallowed hard and typed slowly“ How long, how long have you been seeing my husband?”There was silence from her end, then she replied“Three solid years, Darling ““What!” she was so brutally honest, I swallow the hard lump in my throat.“Yea, he's just your husband on paper but mine in reality. While you were busy celebrating your marriage, he was spending those nights with me”Those words pierced through my heart like a thousand blades. My chest tightened, and tears blurred my vision as I stared at the screen, unable to believe that the person
