Nineteen Minutes to Extinction

Chapter 1

Red lights strobed wildly across the shelter, the alarm blaring so loudly that it seemed to drill straight into my skull.

I didn't even bother wiping the sweat off my face. I just ran, hauling my heavy precision welding kit down the hallway toward the heart of the entire shelter: the fusion core.

If it blew, all 30 thousand people here would turn into frozen statues in an instant.

Outside, the temperature sat at -112 degrees. Without the core's heat, no one would last ten minutes.

I was almost at the basement entrance when a woman in a fur coat suddenly stepped out and blocked me.

She was Miranda Dunn, the mistress of Leon Garrett, the guard captain.

In a world where even potatoes were rationed, she still had flawless makeup on.

"Stop right there, Zach! What are you sneaking around with?"

She spread her arms and blocked my path, her eyes sharp and suspicious.

"Move! The core's about to blow. I need to get in there and fix it!" My throat felt raw as I tried to push past her.

Miranda shoved me hard. I stumbled into the wall, and the repair case slammed to the floor with a heavy crash.

"Fix it? Looks more like you're planning to poison us!"

She raised her voice, the sound echoing harshly through the corridor.

"Everyone, come look! Zach's about to dump poison into the vents! I didn't approve a private room for him two days ago, and now he wants us all dead!"

The alarm had already drawn a crowd. Panicked residents filled the hallway. At her shout, dozens of eyes snapped toward me.

"Miranda, have you lost it?" I snapped. "That's liquid metal repair compound, not poison!"

I scrambled up, reaching for the case on the ground.

"Don't move! Hands up!"

A squad of fully armed guards rushed in, led by Leon. He strode over and pulled Miranda into his arms, his gaze turning cold as he looked at me.

"Zach. What do you think you're doing?"

"Captain Garrett, the core pressure's at critical. If we don't fix it now, it'll be too late!"

I pointed at the flashing red numbers on the wall, my voice shaking.

Miranda clung to him, pointing at my case as she shrieked, "He's lying! He said it himself. He wants revenge. He's going to dump poison into the cooling system! He's just bitter I wouldn't give him a private room. Someone like him would do anything!"

Leon let out a cold scoff and waved his hand.

"Hold him down. Search the case."

Two large guards lunged forward and pinned me, slamming my face against the freezing metal door. My glasses hit the floor and shattered under Leon's boot.

"Leon! Look at the panel! That's a core overload warning!"

I struggled, my cheek scraping against the metal until I felt skin break.

Leon flipped open my case and stared at the canisters of silver liquid inside.

"What is this? No labels. Looks like some kind of toxic chemical to me."

He picked one up, like he was about to smash it on the ground.

"Don't! That's high-purity nano repair compound. There are only three cans left in the entire shelter!"

My vision went red.

If the core melted down without it, nothing could save us!

"Zach, you're quite the actor."

  • Nineteen Minutes to Extinction   Chapter 10

"Go ahead. Pour it."My voice stayed calm.Cole froze for a second."You think I won't?"He slammed the lever down.At the same time, Miranda tipped the entire container of toxic fertilizer into the intake. Green liquid surged through the pipes. They stared at the upper monitors, waiting to see the greenhouse crops wither. But the hydroponic beds stayed clear. The seedlings were still bright and green.Cole panicked, slamming his hands against the panel. "What's going on? Why isn't it getting through?"I looked at them through the reinforced glass and pressed the comm switch."You really think I'd leave a backdoor like that when I rebuilt the system? I already modified the physical anti-backflow controls. If you force the flow, it triggers an emergency cutoff."Cole's face drained of color. He let go of the lever and staggered back. "Cut off? Then where did the toxin go?"Miranda spun around, her eyes darting.A dull thud came from the ventilation system, then the green va

A low, heavy rumble filled the room. The needle on the gauge crept upward, then settled firmly into the green. Warmth flowed back through the pipes, spreading into every corner.Lights flickered on, one after another. In the corridors, people hugged each other, crying.Cheryl ran over, holding a small yellow flower, freshly grown in the greenhouse."Mr. McCarthy, this is for you."I took it from her, breathing in that faint, fragile scent of life.-The core hummed steady and strong. The shelter held at a stable 68 degrees. The seeds we brought back had already sprouted in the greenhouse.I stood over a hydroponic bed, watching the green shoots and logging their growth.Russell walked up and handed me a cup of water. "Zach, the first batch of fast-growing greens will be ready to harvest tomorrow."I nodded, taking a sip. "As long as the water circulation holds, we can double output."Then a sharp, piercing alarm cut through the greenhouse. Red warning lights flashed wildly

The team broke down in tears of relief. Then, a strange scraping sound came from deep within the ruins. Shadows flickered between the broken structures. They were mutated creatures from the surface, or maybe the exiled drifters.I tightened my grip on the electromagnetic rifle."Don't move around. Grab the parts and pull out fast."We moved quickly, hauling what we needed.Right as we were about to leave, a woman burst out from the wreckage. Her hair was matted, her face hollow. She swung a bent steel rod around like a madwoman."Food! Give me food!"She was one of the families cast out with Leon's men, left to scrape by on the surface.Looking into her empty, desperate eyes, I let out a quiet sigh."Leave the rest of our rations. We're moving."On the way back, the storm got worse. Our tracked vehicle broke down on the ice field. The oxygen alarm started screaming."Zach, are we not making it back?" someone asked; there was fear in his voice.I looked toward the faint glo

This was the best intensive care room in the shelter.Russell sat beside the bed, looking like he had aged ten years overnight. Cheryl was asleep with her head resting near me, her cheeks flushed with warmth."You're awake."Russell's voice was rough.I tried to sit up, but it felt like every bone in my body had been shattered."The core… What happened to it?""It's stable for now. Your geothermal setup kept everyone from freezing."Russell stood and saluted me. "Thank you. You saved Cheryl. You saved 30 thousand people."I let out a faint, tired laugh. "What about Leon and Miranda?"Russell's expression turned cold in an instant."Leon lost both legs to the cold in the wreckage. When the others found him, they dragged him out onto the ice field and left him for the wolves."As for Miranda… The refugees beat her until she couldn't walk. She's locked in the lowest level of the mining sector now, clearing waste every day."They'll live worse than death."I nodded. I didn't f

"Cut the crap! Saving her comes first!"I clenched my teeth and squeezed sideways into the narrow gap packed with twisted rebar and broken concrete. It was freezing inside. Every breath stabbed my lungs like needles.I crawled about 15 feet before I finally saw her.Cheryl was trapped between two slabs. She was barely conscious, her face pale and tinged blue."Cheryl, it's okay. I'm here."I shoved aside the rubble. A jagged piece of metal sliced my palm open deep enough to show bone.I ignored the blood and shrugged off my coat, wrapping it around her. Just as I was about to carry her out, a violent tremor shook the space above us."Zach… Help me… Take me with you…"Miranda, covered in blood, dragged herself to the opening. Her eyes locked onto Cheryl in my arms, and something wild flashed through them."Give her to me! I'll take her out and claim the credit. Commander Norris will spare me!"She reached for the child."Get lost!"I kicked her hard in the shoulder. She sc

Leon dropped to his knees, groveling before Russell."Commander Norris, please, spare me! It's full of toxic gas, and the whole place is collapsing. Going in there is suicide!"Russell didn't even look at him. He gave a small wave of his hand, and the guards stepped forward, grabbing both of them like they weighed nothing."Throw them in."Two sharp screams cut through the air as Leon and Miranda were hurled into the dark wreckage.Russell turned to me, something unreadable in his eyes. "Zach, can the core still be fixed?"I glanced at the panel. The energy reading had dropped to zero."The core's done, but there's a backup plan. I need full command authority."Russell nodded without hesitation. "From this moment on, you're the shelter's chief engineer. Anyone who disobeys you will be executed."I took a deep breath, ignoring the pain in my hands."Listen up. Collect every scrap battery and heating coil you can find. We need a second line of defense before the surface cold pu
