Yes ... Or ... No?

Yes ... Or ... No?

Yes ... Or ... No?

That had been her mantra every sleeping and waking moment for three days stretch!

***

On the third day of thinking whether she should call Beauty Carpenter back and give her an answer, she decided to first place a call to Mowe, Judah's close colleague at the CIA.

The call connected with a click and then a breath.

“Fedora?” came the familiar voice—steady, low, a little older.

“Mowe.” Her own voice cracked around his name. “Thank you for picking up.”

“Of course. Trenholm told me you’d reach out.” A pause. “How are you holding up?”

She didn’t answer that. Not really. “I need to ask you something. And I need you to tell me the whole truth.”

There was silence on the line—then a rustle, as though Mowe had sat down.

“Go ahead.”

“Do you think it’s possible Judah survived that explosion?”

Another silence. Longer this time.

“I won’t lie to you,” Mowe began slowly. “It was a thermobaric bomb, Mrs. Carlstone. It doesn’t just explode. It inh

The sky over Dubai glowed amber as the sun slid behind the horizon. Fedora stood at the top of the stairs of the gateway house, adjusting her necklace, trying not to let the churning inside her show. The air was cooler now, but her palms were damp, her chest tight. Then she saw him.Jason stepped out of the sleek black SUV and waved at her with a smile that stretched across his face like the golden years she’d buried. It was that smile—Judah’s smile, and it robbed her legs of strength. Her heel slipped on the edge of the stair.“Fedora!” he called. She gasped as she missed her steps while coming down the outside staircase. In a flash, Jason was sprinting. The world tilted. Stairs rushing by in a blur—until she landed with a breath-stealing thud… right on top of him.His back hit the ground first, arms wrapping instinctively around her to cushion the fall. For a heartbeat, time stopped. Fedora’s face was inches from his, her palms braced against the hard rise of his chest. Her body tre

The Dubai sun poured golden light over the sleek terminal as Fedora stepped through the arrival gates of DXB International Airport. Her eyes scanned the sea of travelers and chauffeurs holding signs, until a familiar voice called out.“Fedora!”Beauty Carpenter waved, radiant in oversized sunglasses and a flowing cream jumpsuit. Beside her stood him—Jay.Fedora’s breath caught, a stutter of something she couldn’t name pulsing beneath her ribs.Jay or... Jason, as he was now known—smiled gently. He was dressed in a simple navy polo and beige slacks. His beard was neatly trimmed, his eyes still the same deep, stormy grey she once knew… or thought she did.“Let me help with that,” he said, reaching effortlessly for her suitcase.Their hands brushed.Fedora flinched. Just a little. His touch wasn’t cold, but it wasn’t warm either. It was steady. Kind. Familiar. Too familiar.“Thank you,” she murmured, voice thinner than usual.Jay looked at her then—really looked, and tilted his head slig

One month later, Fedora found herself in the sky, eyes pressed to the small window of her first-class seat as the plane sliced through clouds. Below, the world blurred into a soft tapestry of light and dust. Ahead of her—Dubai. This wasn’t a vacation. It was a mission. With just seven months until Beauty Carpenter’s high-profile wedding, Fedora had flown in alone—no entourage, no assistants. Her goal was to study the layout of the State of Dubai: venue options, event halls, lighting and sound experts, and reliable vendors. She wanted to meet with local decorators, florists, and explore markets where she could source her materials directly—linens, flowers, crystals, drapery, and more, then she could then invite all her team members 2 months to the planned date for final preparation. And besides, this wasn’t just about Beauty’s wedding—it was about Fedora Events expanding internationally.Because the budget?A jaw-dropping five hundred thousand dollars!Fedora had never handled a single

“Mama, can we go see Daddy now?”The question came softly, from the one of the twins, Eliana. Her sister, Zariah, nodded eagerly, eyes wide with innocence. “We want to tell him something.”Fedora froze at the kitchen sink, dish towel in hand, her heart thudding like a war drum in her chest. She turned slowly, blinking back tears before kneeling to their level.“What do you want to tell him?” she asked gently.Eliana whispered, “It’s a secret… but we want him to hear it. Like always.”Since their first birthday, Fedora had taken them to Langley every year—to the CIA Memorial Wall. It was her way of making sure Judah lived on in their hearts, even if he was nothing but a face in framed photographs and stories etched in her soul. She told them how she met their father—leaving out the painful tale of her posing as a bride-for-hire, and how Judah had made her laugh, protected her, and whispered love like it was a secret only they shared. That memorial star, and the ring preserved beneath g

The screen buzzed to life. Jenny's face appeared, slightly grainy in the afternoon light of New York.“Jen,” Fedora breathed, pacing her living room. Her fingers trembled. “I saw him. I saw Judah.”Jenny blinked. “What?”“At the surprise proposal I planned for my client, Beauty - Sylvia's cousin from Dubai. He stepped out of the car… And Jenny, it was him. Same walk. Same voice. Same face...'“Fedora—wait...” Jenny interjected.“Jusy hold on, I’m sending you the video now.”She forwarded the clip. It was shaky, captured by one of her assistants—a casual behind-the-scenes moment of the groom-to-be stepping out of a sleek black car, smiling nervously, and wiping his palms on his jeans before walking toward the proposal setup. Then, Beauty Carpenter on one knee, tears in her eyes.Jenny watched it. Then again. She blinked, leaned closer, then sat back.“My God,” she whispered. “He does look like him. I mean… It’s uncanny.”“You think I’m crazy, don’t you?”“No,” Jenny sighed. “I think yo
