Chapter 4

Penulis: Wheat Stalk
The sharp sound echoed through the office.

Peter was stunned for a moment before flying into a rage. He jabbed a finger in my face and bellowed, "Julia, you ungrateful bitch! Who do you think you are, acting all high and mighty?

"Everyone knows you're a slut, begging to be fucked. You're nothing but trash who sleeps her way into deals."

I glared at him. My stomach was churning violently. Ignoring his insults, I skimmed the contract and quickly signed it once I confirmed the terms were reasonable.

"Get out the moment you're done signing!" Peter panted with fury, jabbing a finger at the papers. "Listen. You're finished in this industry.

"The company will immediately activate the non-compete clause. I'll use every connection I have to blacklist you across the entire field. Let's see which company dares to hire you!"

Watching him rage on helplessly, I merely raised an eyebrow and said nothing. I picked up the signed resignation documents and turned to leave.

To my surprise, Hannah was still standing at my desk. Contempt filled her face as she casually flipped through my 200-page proposal report.

"I trained you for so long, but it wasn't until today that I realized you actually have quite a talent for stealing," I said evenly.

Catching the sarcasm in my tone, she immediately mustered as much authority as she could in her tone as the new manager.

"Julia, what do you mean? I'm the manager now. What right does a laid-off employee like you have to lecture me?

"This pile of nonsense has nothing to do with our project. Stop pretending like you're important. You're just all show and no substance."

One look at her self-righteous expression made me laugh. She hadn't officially taken over Mr. Langley's project yet, so she had no idea what the report was worth.

"Ms. Storrie, don't be too confident," I deliberately reminded her in a solemn tone. "This document is very important. After I leave, whether you get promoted, receive raises, or even secure your position as manager may very well depend on it. I suggest you keep it safe."

However, Hannah thought I was provoking her. She snorted.

"Are you trying to scare me?"

She grabbed the thick report and strode to the shredder in the corner of the office. After tearing it apart, she shoved it into the machine bit by bit.

"Know your place, bitch," she drawled out.

I stood there in silence, watching the report that consumed countless sleepless nights of my life instantly turn into fluttering white scraps in the air. Relief washed over me.

Just then, Peter's office door flew open. His voice was dripping with fury as he barked, "Hannah! Mr. Langley just called. He said the data migration system proposal from before was indeed very well done.

"His tech team wants to study it in more depth. Hurry up and find the backup or softcopy and send it to him to review again!"

She looked momentarily lost but still responded, "Alright. I'll do it right now."

Meanwhile, I picked up the cardboard box with my belongings and walked out of the company in high spirits.

My phone suddenly rang. A message notifying me of my exam results appeared on the screen, and I beamed.

Almost at the same time, Mr. Holmes called.

"Julia, my secretary said you offended Peter," he said tentatively. "Is there anything I can help with? Just say the word."

Knowing exactly what he implied, I replied, "Peter has activated the non-compete clause, so I'm afraid I won't be able to work for you for the time being. My apologies.

"But Mr. Holmes, I have some extremely good news."

  • No Commission? Watch Me Raise Hell in the Tax Bureau   Chapter 10

When Peter heard the news, he hurried out of his office. His eyes widened the moment he saw me in a tax officer's uniform. Shock and disbelief crossed his face as I presented my credentials and official documents. I handled things strictly by the book by keeping my tone calm and neutral. "Mr. Zane, we are from the Municipal Tax Bureau Inspection Division. This is our inspection notice."According to our work schedule, we will be conducting a routine inspection of your company's tax filings over the past three years.""M-Ms. Quigley? It's really been a while," he choked out. Other former colleagues peeked out from their cubicles. Hannah was even more stunned. Her jaw dropped as soon as she saw me. Whispers rippled through the office. "How did she end up at the tax bureau?""And she's auditing our company? Is she doing this on purpose?"The inspection proceeded according to protocol, and we retrieved a large volume of company records. The finance director kept smiling polit

Ava, who had been hiding in the corner the whole time, sidled up to me. "My judgment has failed me before, and I was fooled by Ms. Storrie," she said. "I heard you've already found a new position. Could you… put in a referral for me?"I looked at her and suddenly found this situation a little ridiculous. These people were always weighing the pros and cons, always searching for the next person to cling to. "My job doesn't allow that," I replied bluntly. The elevator doors slowly closed, completely shutting me out of the company I had spent half of my youth in. Through the narrowing gap, I took one last look at the place where I had strived for countless days and nights. I felt unexpectedly calm. I landed a nine-to-five job. The pay wasn't high, but it was stable. Most of my colleagues were middle-aged and treated me kindly. Besides, the savings I had accumulated over the years were enough for me to live comfortably. I finally had time to learn flower arranging and sign up f

"That hard drive was set up with a special program," I said, standing at the door. "Once formatted, it automatically triggers a low-level wipe. All data will be permanently erased.""Stop trying to scare us!" Hannah glowered at me, then turned to the IT staff who had just arrived and ordered, "Hurry and find a way to recover the data!"After that, it was pin-drop silence for half an hour. The only sounds were keyboard clicks and the increasingly rapid breathing of the IT staff. Peter stared at the screen. Fine beads of sweat began forming on his forehead. Hannah paced back and forth. Her anxiety was unmistakable. Finally, the IT lead looked up and wiped his sweat. "Mr. Zane, I can't retrieve the data at all. The hard drive was wiped three times using a special algorithm. Even professional data recovery firms wouldn't be able to do anything." Hannah's last shred of hope died out. She staggered and grabbed the edge of the desk. Her face was deathly pale. Peter turned to me

"Julia, stop acting like you're fearless!" Hannah snapped. "I can't believe you still have the nerve to smile at a time like this."My chest tightened. I wasn't reluctant to let them reap what I sowed, but I still explained everything to them clearly. "The file is on my work computer, Ms. Storrie," I said. "Didn't you search it thoroughly already? It's also clearly stated on the handover checklist that all related technical materials were retained according to the law."Hannah's face paled. Her eyes darted across the room as she looked everywhere but me. Her voice was beginning to waver. "That's impossible. I checked everything. There was no such file!""There's no way I would've left something so important in plain sight," I said, my voice tinged with contempt. "It's in the hidden private partition on the hard drive. If you had actually read the handover documents carefully, you would know."Peter immediately brightened. Barely able to contain his delight, he said hastily, "Th

I took a deep breath and said coldly, "Ms. Storrie, let's get this straight. You were the one who destroyed the document, and now you want to turn the tables and blame me? No one in the workplace will buy your act of pretending to be the victim."At that moment, the elevator let out a soft chime as its doors opened. Peter hurried out, taking in the tension lingering in the air and the curious onlookers. A smooth, practiced smile immediately spread across his face. "Oh, come on," he said as his voice dropped to a deliberate croon. "We're all on the same side. Why can't we talk things through calmly?"Julia, Mr. Langley is being hard on us right now. How about we go upstairs and talk this over first?"I glanced at the growing crowd around us, noticing quite a few familiar faces among them. Thinking of the vetting process I had to go through for my new job, I knew that letting things escalate here would ultimately work against me. After a moment of contemplation, I suppressed my

"Julia, you bitch!"I turned around to see Hannah storming toward the doorway. "It was you!" she screeched. "You must've set me up. You knew that document was important, yet you deliberately goaded me into destroying it!"My smile waned as I spoke into the phone. "Sorry, Mr. Holmes. Something's come up on my end. Let's talk another day."I looked at Hannah coldly. "Hannah, if you're mentally ill, go see a doctor. Don't stand here making a scene."Having delusions is an illness too. It's better to get treated as soon as possible. Do you want me to recommend a doctor?"My words left her choking with anger. Her face was flushed."Stop acting like you're innocent!" she shouted. She grabbed my wrist when she saw that I was about to leave. "Come back with me. Go explain it to Mr. Zane. It was you who baited me into shredding that document. You have to go back and clear this up for me!"Pain shot through my wrist, and I frowned. "Listen up, Hannah," I hissed, wrenching my hand fr
