Chapter 3

Author: Fortune Mind
Since then, so as not to trigger the family’s anger, I restricted myself to plain oatmeal and finished my food quickly before excusing myself from the dinner table.

Next, I retreated to the piano room, practicing pieces for an international music competition.

Barely a few notes in, Danny covered his ears and shrieked, curling up on the floor and trembling.

He cried out, “Stop it! Stop playing! The sound reminds me of pigs being slaughtered in the countryside. I’m scared… I’m so scared…”

Emma burst into the room and slammed the piano lid shut.

If not for my reflexes, my fingers would have snapped in two right there and then.

“All you do is play the piano! Don’t you know Danny is traumatized? Can’t you just give it a rest?” Emma’s eyes bulge in rage.

I shakily explained, “Mom, I have a competition coming up next week…”

“Who cares? Danny is terrified, and all you can think about is the competition.”

The next day, the piano that had been in my life for all of my childhood and teenage years was removed.

As I stood in silence in the empty piano room, Liam approached and gave me a piece of his mind.

“It’s just a piano. Wipe the look off your face. Quit intimidating Danny. Stop acting so entitled.”

I learned to walk on eggshells at home, my nerves constantly on edge.

Still, it didn’t matter. So long as I was part of the household, my marriage with Kyra still stood. I could put up with everything.

My only source of solace during those dark days was Kyra.

Kyra was there as Liam and Emma’s constant berating trimmed the pounds off me. She would embrace me in heartache.

“Fear not, Rhys. You still have me.

“It’s not your fault. You’ve done so well. I’ll give you all the love in the world. You can always count on me even when it’s you against the world.”

Sharing my resentment, she made Danny the enemy.

Kyra made her stance clear to Liam and Emma. “I only recognize Rhys as my fiancé, and no one else.”

Each time Liam and Emma showed favoritism toward Danny, Kyra would step in and pull me away.

She had no qualms taking my side in public. “Mr. and Mrs. Green, Rhys is innocent in all this. It’s not his fault that there was a hospital mix-up at birth. It’s true that he has been devoted to you as a son for the past twenty years.

“Rhys has already been accommodating of Danny since his return. Why must you treat them differently?”

While brushing past Danny, Kyra would shoot him a look of disgust and say icily, “Save your mind games for someone else. I won’t engage in this silliness.”

I was lucky to have her in my life.

Yet somehow, everything changed.

Danny was assigned an internship at the family company.

He would stand outside Kyra’s office building in the rain, just to bring her a homemade lunch.

Kyra would walk away differently when she saw his lips turned purple from the freezing cold.

Her silhouette from the back remained resolute, though her tense footsteps betrayed her true feelings.

For once, Kyra accepted the food out of embarrassment, and that was when she spotted the scar on Danny’s wrist.

Danny recounted his horrific details of her childhood in the most nonchalant tone.

Kyra said, “What does that have to do with me? Spare me those sob stories.”

However, she gradually stopped defending me altogether. In fact, she persuaded me, “Danny has had it tough. Don’t be so petty with him,”

She started taking Danny to the amusement parks for the carousels and watched the sunset at the beach, which was supposed to be our thing.

With my anxiety gnawing at me, I stuck close to her and felt as though I were walking on a fragile bubble that could burst at any moment.

Kyra’s initial guilt grew into annoyance.

The agonizing dynamic dragged on until last month, on the day of my birthday.

Just before dinner, Kyra got a call from Danny.

Danny was inconsolable. “Kyra, there’s a thunderstorm. I’m terrified. Back at the orphanage, someone would always sneak into my room during this time…”

Without another word, Kyra snatched her car keys and was on her way out.

I grabbed her sleeve, my expression numb, “Kyra, it’s my birthday today. Plus, the house staff and my parents are home. Nothing’s going to happen to him.”

While studying the stage setup blueprint, I answered nonchalantly, “Just admit it. You’ll never amount to anything. "Twenty years can change many things, but it can’t erase greed and stupidity.“You were given opportunities, platforms, and unconditional favoritism, and what did you do? “You threw away a perfectly good hand. “Don’t bother calling again. Save your excuses for the authorities.” After the call, I handed my phone to my assistant. “Block this number.” My assistant nodded and asked cautiously, “R, an older-looking man is asking for you. He claims to be your former father.” I paused for a second before resuming my composure. “Send him away. “Tell security that no one is allowed in without prior appointment.” That night, the venue was packed to maximum capacity. Taking my spot at the center of the stage in my crisp tuxedo, I spotted Kyra tucked away in a corner. She held a bouquet of my favorite flowers, her eyes mesmerized and heavy with regret. Meanw

Left with no choice, Liam called me from a random number. The moment the call went through, Liam wailed hysterically. “Rhys! Rhys, come quickly to the hospital! Your mom isn’t going to make it!“How could you be so cruel as to destroy the family? Danny is young. He doesn’t know any better. How could you release the audio clip? “Issue a statement to confirm that the recording is a fake. If your mother dies from shock, that’s on you!” His twisted accusation brushed away the last trace of emotions I had for the family. “Mr. Green.” I cut him off coldly. “It’s Danny’s behavior killing her, not mine.“Experts have received the recording, and they have verified its authenticity.“I’m no longer part of the family, so whatever happens to you is none of my business.” “You…” Liam sputtered. “We raised you for twenty years, and this is how you repay us?” “The funds I left you are enough to cover the cost of raising me. As far as I’m concerned…” I paused before murmuring, “I do

Then came an unexpected turn of events just as I was about to gather evidence to bring about a lawsuit. The director of Danny’s former orphanage came forward. Disgusted by the lies, the director uploaded a lengthy video to show the truth. As it turned out, Danny was far from the punching bag he portrayed himself to be. In fact, he was the bully there. He often stole food and toys from other orphans, terrorizing those smaller than him. His claims about getting beaten for eating meat and flinching at the sight of protein were just fabricated sob stories and outright lies. To make matters worse, actual surveillance footage from back then surfaced online. The clip showed a young Danny comfortably puffing on cigarettes, drinking, swearing up a storm, and physically assaulting the other kids around him. This tyrannical behavior proved he was a completely different person from the helpless victim he pretended to be at home. The narrative flipped immediately.Stunned, the pu

Standing below the stage, Kyra grimaced hard. The hushed voices all around felt like pins and needles on her back. In the past, I always made her look good whenever I attended social events with her. Whether it was my eloquence, my social graces, or talent, I had always set the gold standard in our elite circle. Despite putting on an expensive tailored suit, Danny didn’t know the difference between a dessert spoon and a soup spoon. He even screeched his knife across the plate while eating steak. Danny sat on the piano bench, cold sweat drenching his back. He turned to Kyra pleadingly before looking at Liam and Emma in the audience. Pulling a scowl, Emma wished the ground could swallow her as a whole. The emcee was quick to manage damage control. “It looks like Mr. Green is feeling under the weather today. Without further ado, let us welcome our special guest performer, R, to deliver tonight’s opening act.” The venue lights dimmed, with the spotlight locking onto me.

The comments section tore me up. “He stole the heir’s life and had the nerve to be smug about it. He got what he deserved!” “Word on the street is that the impostor has been walking all over the real heir. The poor guy doesn’t even have enough to eat.” “He and his type should get out of high society!” I scrolled past the mean comments with a straight face, not fazed at the slightest. Before, I would panic and explain myself. I would also turn to Kyra for help to clear the air. Yet now, these were just noise to me. I logged into my personal account, the mysterious piano blogger known as “R,” with two million followers. An update was published. “Starting fresh. Open for commercial gigs. DM for inquiries.” Within ten minutes, my inbox blew up.Meanwhile, the Greens’ world was starting to unravel. Getting up in the morning, Liam cried out of habit, “Rhys, where is my prescription for my blood pressure? I’m wearing the dark suit today. Why isn’t it pressed yet?” There

Only after checking into a rundown motel did I finally notice the sharp cramps in my stomach. To save myself from Danny’s sarcastic remarks at the dinner table, I hadn’t had a full meal in a while. I left the motel room and bought some tacos from the vendor around the corner. The tacos were still piping hot, and the heat alone made my eyes water. The vendor handed me a napkin. “Too spicy for you to handle, boy? Or are you hitting a rough patch?” I wiped away my tears and shoveled down the long-awaited carbs with a composed smile. “No, these are the best tacos ever.“It’s been a while since anyone asked me whether I was hungry.” Meanwhile, all hell broke loose at the Green residence. In my bedroom, Danny cautiously studied Emma’s grim face and Liam’s tear-stained face. “Mom, Dad, did I do something wrong? Rhys took everything with him. His favorite family photo is facedown on the table…” Liam stared at things on the nightstand, feeling empty inside. He picked the pa
