Chapter 4

作者: Fortune Mind
“Rhys, where is your heart?”

Kyra pulled a scowl, her gaze dripping with condemnation. “Danny is timid and broken. What’s wrong with giving him some grace?

“Birthdays happen every year. What if he gets physically sick from terror? Why can’t you be a little understanding?”

Keeping the pain to myself, I pressed on. “You’re my girlfriend. You reserved this day for me—”

Kyra cut me off.

She looked disappointed, her eyes flickering with agony.

“Rhys, there are times I wish I could turn back time and stop the switch at birth. Maybe then…”

With her words trailing off, she turned on her heel and walked into the rain.

However, I got the message loud and clear.

I didn’t stop her.

The unspoken words were clear to me. If that mistake hadn’t happened back then, Danny wouldn’t have suffered that abuse, and she would have been the one by his side all those years.

Kyra had second thoughts.

She started to feel that Danny would have been far more deserving of those twenty years of love and privilege.

Left alone with a table of cold food, I blew out the candles.

In that moment, I finally accepted the reality that the girl who had promised to protect me was no longer there.

Back at the Green residence, I took a quick shower.

Then, I laid a legal document ending all family ties on the table, together with my bank card.

The card was linked to my bank account, containing everything I earned from investing my allowance over the years, along with dividends from my shares.

Though the sum might not amount to much compared to the twenty years of luxury the Greens had provided me, it should cover the cost of raising me.

I put my signature on the document.

Later, I started packing my bags.

My suitcase held nothing but a few changes of clothes, some music sheets, and the family portrait I once cherished more than anything in the world.

After much hesitation, I placed it facedown on the table.

The photo served no use to me anymore.

I texted my attorney. “You can go ahead with the plan.”

On my way down the steps, the front door swung open.

Liam, Emma, and Kyra had returned with Danny in tow.

Noticing I was standing on the staircase landing with a suitcase in hand, Emma paused for a minute before scoffing.

“What’s this? Are you threatening to run away from home? Oh, please, Rhys. Grow up. This is beyond your age. Do you think we’d be fussing all over you?”

Danny teared up. “Are you leaving because of me? Kyra, please talk to him. I don’t want to be the reason everybody is miserable…”

Kyra’s heart went out to Danny as he looked broken. “Rhys, drop the attitude. Danny is unwell. Just cut it out.”

Infuriated, Emma lashed out, “Let him be! We’ll see how long he’s going to last out there on his own!

“Without the family name to back him up, I doubt he can survive. Even better if he gets out and stays out!”

Storming back to her bedroom, Emma refused to even take another look at me.

Liam dropped his briefcase and marched to the bedroom. While brushing past me, he said curtly, “My conscience is clear because I know I have done right by you. Don’t expect me to apologize to you.

“My own son had a tough time out there on his own for years, but I showed you grace by letting you stay under my roof anyway because people will grow attached to anything, even dogs.”

His voice grew sharp with agitation. “But dogs show loyalty and gratitude while you hurt my boy again and again.

If this is the attitude you’re going to take, then leave. Just don’t come crawling back like you used to as a child.”

I brushed away the moisture on my cheeks and swallowed my emotions. “Fine.”

Liam paused for a moment. Since I kept my mouth shut, he closed his eyes in disappointment and went upstairs.

‘Goodbye, Mom and Dad.’

One last time, I let myself think of them as Mom and Dad.

I was fast approaching the door when Kyra grabbed my arm. “I’ll still marry you. Don’t you think you’re being unreasonable by throwing away all our years together over Danny’s one little comment?”

Breaking free from her grip, I murmured, “It’s over, Kyra.”

Kyra clenched her fists. “All this over one comment?”

At this point, I couldn’t be bothered to argue. I nodded. “Yes, that’s right.

“You can take back the promise to keep me safe. We’re even.”

Kyra seethed with rage, her eyes bloodshot. After letting out a scoff, she pulled Danny inside.

While marching past me, she said icily, “Just make sure you don’t regret this. I don’t give second chances.”

“Okay.”

I nodded. With my back straight, I walked into the night.

While studying the stage setup blueprint, I answered nonchalantly, “Just admit it. You’ll never amount to anything. "Twenty years can change many things, but it can’t erase greed and stupidity.“You were given opportunities, platforms, and unconditional favoritism, and what did you do? “You threw away a perfectly good hand. “Don’t bother calling again. Save your excuses for the authorities.” After the call, I handed my phone to my assistant. “Block this number.” My assistant nodded and asked cautiously, “R, an older-looking man is asking for you. He claims to be your former father.” I paused for a second before resuming my composure. “Send him away. “Tell security that no one is allowed in without prior appointment.” That night, the venue was packed to maximum capacity. Taking my spot at the center of the stage in my crisp tuxedo, I spotted Kyra tucked away in a corner. She held a bouquet of my favorite flowers, her eyes mesmerized and heavy with regret. Meanw

Left with no choice, Liam called me from a random number. The moment the call went through, Liam wailed hysterically. “Rhys! Rhys, come quickly to the hospital! Your mom isn’t going to make it!“How could you be so cruel as to destroy the family? Danny is young. He doesn’t know any better. How could you release the audio clip? “Issue a statement to confirm that the recording is a fake. If your mother dies from shock, that’s on you!” His twisted accusation brushed away the last trace of emotions I had for the family. “Mr. Green.” I cut him off coldly. “It’s Danny’s behavior killing her, not mine.“Experts have received the recording, and they have verified its authenticity.“I’m no longer part of the family, so whatever happens to you is none of my business.” “You…” Liam sputtered. “We raised you for twenty years, and this is how you repay us?” “The funds I left you are enough to cover the cost of raising me. As far as I’m concerned…” I paused before murmuring, “I do

Then came an unexpected turn of events just as I was about to gather evidence to bring about a lawsuit. The director of Danny’s former orphanage came forward. Disgusted by the lies, the director uploaded a lengthy video to show the truth. As it turned out, Danny was far from the punching bag he portrayed himself to be. In fact, he was the bully there. He often stole food and toys from other orphans, terrorizing those smaller than him. His claims about getting beaten for eating meat and flinching at the sight of protein were just fabricated sob stories and outright lies. To make matters worse, actual surveillance footage from back then surfaced online. The clip showed a young Danny comfortably puffing on cigarettes, drinking, swearing up a storm, and physically assaulting the other kids around him. This tyrannical behavior proved he was a completely different person from the helpless victim he pretended to be at home. The narrative flipped immediately.Stunned, the pu

Standing below the stage, Kyra grimaced hard. The hushed voices all around felt like pins and needles on her back. In the past, I always made her look good whenever I attended social events with her. Whether it was my eloquence, my social graces, or talent, I had always set the gold standard in our elite circle. Despite putting on an expensive tailored suit, Danny didn’t know the difference between a dessert spoon and a soup spoon. He even screeched his knife across the plate while eating steak. Danny sat on the piano bench, cold sweat drenching his back. He turned to Kyra pleadingly before looking at Liam and Emma in the audience. Pulling a scowl, Emma wished the ground could swallow her as a whole. The emcee was quick to manage damage control. “It looks like Mr. Green is feeling under the weather today. Without further ado, let us welcome our special guest performer, R, to deliver tonight’s opening act.” The venue lights dimmed, with the spotlight locking onto me.

The comments section tore me up. “He stole the heir’s life and had the nerve to be smug about it. He got what he deserved!” “Word on the street is that the impostor has been walking all over the real heir. The poor guy doesn’t even have enough to eat.” “He and his type should get out of high society!” I scrolled past the mean comments with a straight face, not fazed at the slightest. Before, I would panic and explain myself. I would also turn to Kyra for help to clear the air. Yet now, these were just noise to me. I logged into my personal account, the mysterious piano blogger known as “R,” with two million followers. An update was published. “Starting fresh. Open for commercial gigs. DM for inquiries.” Within ten minutes, my inbox blew up.Meanwhile, the Greens’ world was starting to unravel. Getting up in the morning, Liam cried out of habit, “Rhys, where is my prescription for my blood pressure? I’m wearing the dark suit today. Why isn’t it pressed yet?” There

Only after checking into a rundown motel did I finally notice the sharp cramps in my stomach. To save myself from Danny’s sarcastic remarks at the dinner table, I hadn’t had a full meal in a while. I left the motel room and bought some tacos from the vendor around the corner. The tacos were still piping hot, and the heat alone made my eyes water. The vendor handed me a napkin. “Too spicy for you to handle, boy? Or are you hitting a rough patch?” I wiped away my tears and shoveled down the long-awaited carbs with a composed smile. “No, these are the best tacos ever.“It’s been a while since anyone asked me whether I was hungry.” Meanwhile, all hell broke loose at the Green residence. In my bedroom, Danny cautiously studied Emma’s grim face and Liam’s tear-stained face. “Mom, Dad, did I do something wrong? Rhys took everything with him. His favorite family photo is facedown on the table…” Liam stared at things on the nightstand, feeling empty inside. He picked the pa
