Chapter 1

Caleb's POV

Bile mixed with blood flooded into my nose. My breathing grew more and more difficult as I coughed mouthfuls of blood.

I tried to struggle down, but the ropes around my wrists only tightened. It felt like my bones were about to snap.

The crashing sound drew the housekeeper over.

Mrs. Ward strolled in, cracking sunflower seeds, and looked at the filthy mess on the floor with disgust.

"Honestly, Ms. Warren isn't even home. Who are you putting on this show for?

"Even if you died here today, no one would care. Ms. Warren specifically sent me to watch you. Every day, all you know how to do is compete with Mr. Quinn for attention. Have you ever looked at yourself and realized what you're worth?"

After saying that, she covered her nose and backed away.

I suddenly vomited a mouthful of blood onto her.

My consciousness was fading. Instinctively, I begged, "Mrs. Ward, take me to the hospital..."

She shrieked, punched me several times, then called Felicity Warren.

Felicity had just arranged for Simon Quinn to be admitted to the emergency department. When she picked up, her voice was full of impatience.

"Hospital? He just wants to steal Simon's doctor! If he takes Simon's specialist appointment today, don't even think about getting paid this year."

Mrs. Ward raised her eyebrows at me triumphantly.

As if to destroy the last bit of hope in me, she added, "But Mr. Bowman is vomiting blood."

I coughed again. My painful groan made Felicity hesitate.

"Take him down first. I..."

Felicity was still choosing her words when a wounded male voice interrupted her.

"Felicity, I think my stomach doesn't hurt anymore.

"Gastroenteritis is like that. It hurts one moment and stops the next. Even vomiting blood can be a minor issue. Didn't the doctor just say I'm fine?"

He had no stomach illness at all.

I was the one who had ruined my stomach by drinking myself half to death at Felicity's business dinners.

Now I had just come out of surgery, and he had drugged me with something vicious. How could I possibly be fine?

Felicity believed his nonsense and snapped coldly again.

"Hospital, my ass. Watch him. Until I get back, no one is allowed to touch him. He's always trying to compete with Simon. It's disgusting."

Felicity hung up. Mrs. Ward looked at me with gloating delight.

"See? I told you Ms. Warren only has Mr. Quinn in her heart. Why would she care whether you live or die?"

The next second, she glanced at a message on her phone and smiled with malicious pleasure.

"Mr. Quinn is so kind. He was afraid you'd be lonely by yourself, so he specifically told me to bring his favorite pet over to play with you."

After a long while, Felicity shook her head and grabbed my hand, slapping it hard against her face."Caleb, this can't be real. Hit me. Hit me until you're satisfied, and then let's talk properly. I can hire the best doctors to treat you."I pulled my hand back. I only felt disgust."There's nothing to talk about. I don't want to see you again for the rest of my life."The moment I said that, Felicity let out an endless, grief-stricken wail.It seemed she had finally realized there was no chance for us to reconcile. She knelt there in the room, her once-proud shoulders collapsed.I did not stop her. She owed me this. When my uncle returned, he met this unwelcome guest immediately."You still have the nerve to come here?"She lowered her head meekly, completely without her former arrogance."Everything has come to this because of my mistakes. You can punish me however you want. I'll accept it."But could you please put in a good word for me? I really can't leave Caleb.""Bu

Amid Simon's terrified screams, the spider bit into his skin without restraint. He pounded on the door again and again, crying and begging Felicity to send him to the hospital."If you don't send me to the hospital, I'm really going to die!"No one dared respond.Only when the caregiver delivering his food found the blood beneath him did she hurry to Felicity. But Felicity only gave one cold look at his miserable state, without the slightest pity."Caleb was this miserable back then, and you told me it didn't matter."The door slowly closed again. He struggled desperately, dragging his agonized abdomen toward the doorway. His voice was shrill with fear and pain."Felicity, I'm begging you. The spider bit me. I'm really about to die."He was about to grab Felicity's pant leg when she kicked him back hard.Felicity snorted contemptuously."Didn't you say the spider you raised wasn't venomous? If it bit you, then you deserve it."I'd like to see whether a liar like you really

I threw myself into his arms and released all the grievances I had swallowed over the years. After that warm moment passed, a few traces of ruthlessness appeared in my uncle's eyes."I'm overseas, but I still have friends back home. Felicity Warren dared to treat you like this. I won't let her off easily."I touched the wound on my abdomen and silently accepted it.When Simon Quinn had suddenly inserted himself into our lives, I had made a scene many times.Just when I was completely disheartened, I discovered I had early-stage stomach cancer because of all the drinking I had done in the past.Perhaps Felicity remembered our past then, because her attitude toward me changed.I thought this illness might become a bridge that repaired our relationship. In the end, for the sake of a strange man, she still forgot all the affection between us.The sunset outside the window had dyed the horizon red. I thought it was time to let go of this cursed bond. That day, Felicity rarely lost

The director regretfully pointed to a body wrapped in white cloth."We really did everything we could, but there was no antivenom..."Felicity's heart clenched violently, yet she still did not dare believe the body in front of her was Caleb Bowman. She yanked the cloth back and saw only an icy, pale face.It was as if a hand had closed around her throat. Felicity's legs went weak, and she dropped to her knees. Her trembling hand reached out to touch the cold corpse. No matter what, she could not believe it was Caleb Bowman. But she would recognize that face even if it had been reduced to ash."How could this be..."She was so agitated she could no longer speak. She pressed herself against the body, trying to hold the corpse as if she were holding me.The director kindly comforted her. "Ms. Warren, please don't grieve too much. Before your husband passed, he asked me to tell you something. He said he never regretted being with you in this life."Those words shattered her compo

"Uncle, I know I was wrong. Please save me..."My uncle only asked the doctor about my condition and my location."Hold on a little longer. Within five minutes, I'll get the antivenom to you."That mature, authoritative voice made me completely break down.At the critical moment, only blood relatives would reach out.I was loaded back into the ambulance and rushed to the nearest hospital. The doctors had already prepared everything and were waiting for me.As the antivenom entered my veins, my foggy mind suddenly cleared.I felt myself being pushed onto the operating table. Countless tools moved over my abdomen. The doctors shouted technical terms I could not understand. People rushed back and forth. Trays of blood bags were brought in.It was over in less than half an hour. But the operating room was terrifyingly quiet. The bad feeling in my heart spread wider and wider.I used all my strength to ask the doctor what had happened. But the doctor pressed me back onto the b

"Don't take him to the hospital. That's fake blood on him. Tell him that if he wants my forgiveness, he needs to start cooking right now. Otherwise, I won't come home today."The runner wanted to explain again, but the call was cut off without mercy. He crouched in front of me and confirmed that the blood on the floor had come from my mouth. His brows twisted together. After a long mental struggle, he untied me."I don't know how you made Ms. Warren so angry, but this isn't right. I can't just watch someone die."After saying that, he called an ambulance for me.Before the heart I had been holding up could settle, the doctor's words shoved it back into my throat. If I did not receive antivenom within ten minutes, I would definitely die.But this particular antivenom was rare in the country. Getting it transferred from anywhere else was unrealistic. After entering my identity information, the doctor suddenly brightened."You're Ms. Warren's husband? Then this is easy. Her priv
