Chapter 2

Penulis: Sole Authority
The next morning, I dragged myself into work.

I'd just sat down at my desk when my phone buzzed. It was a payroll verification notification. I absentmindedly unlocked the screen, but the moment I saw the number, I felt like I'd been struck by lightning, and blood rushed to my head.

3,500 dollars.

I checked the zeroes and decimal point over and over to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

I was the company's sales supervisor. With base salary and commission, I never took home less than 20,000 dollars a month.

Last month, I'd practically worked myself to the bone for that huge contract. Just the performance bonus alone should've been over 10,000 dollars.

How could my total pay be only 3,500 dollars?

My hands trembling, I pulled up the HR management system to check the salary breakdown.

But a single glance was enough to make me so angry I almost smashed my phone.

Under the attendance column, it clearly read, "Sick Leave: 10 days."

Under performance bonuses, there was a single "0".

And the remark read, "Due to excessive absences, full attendance bonus and performance bonus for the month have been deducted."

I had only taken one day of sick leave last month—the day I was hospitalized for stomach bleeding. The other two days had been the weekend!

Clutching a printed copy of the payslip, I stormed into the administration department.

Kristie was sitting at her desk, holding a small mirror and leisurely touching up her lipstick.

"Kristie Madison!" I snapped, slamming the payslip onto her desk. "What's the meaning of this? Explain it to me!"

She jumped in fright, nearly smearing her lipstick. She looked up at me impatiently. "Why are you so angry this early in the morning?"

"Cut the crap!"

I pointed at the numbers on the payslip. "I only took one day off last month. Why is it recorded as ten days? And where's my performance bonus?"

She picked up the payslip, pretended to look at it, then casually tossed it back to me.

"Oh, that? I must have misread the attendance sheet and thought the '1' was a '10'."

She continued pursing her lips at the mirror as she spoke, as if this were all some trivial matter.

"Misread?" I repeated, laughing in sheer disbelief at her shameless attitude. "You managed to misread '1' as '10'? Then what about my performance bonus? I closed a five-million-dollar deal. The commission hasn't come down yet, but I should at least get my performance bonus!"

She put the mirror down and said unapologetically, "Performance bonus? Mr. Spradlin said that even though you closed the deal, you took too many sick days and affected the team morale, so your performance rating was a 'C'. Naturally, you don't get a bonus."

"Bullshit!" I snapped, unable to control myself. "I nearly killed myself to land that deal, and in the end, I affected team morale? Recalculate my pay right now, Kristie, and pay me what I'm owed!"

The argument quickly drew a crowd of coworkers.

Just then, the manager's office door opened, and Robert walked out with his hands behind his back.

"What's all this ruckus? Is this a farmer's market?"

At the sight of him, Kristie's eyes instantly reddened. She got up from her seat and sidled over, looking all aggrieved and pitiful.

"Mr. Spradlin… Brooke is complaining that her salary is too low and is forcing me to change it right now."

I looked at Robert and forced my anger down. "Mr. Spradlin, she's the one who altered my attendance records. That's a serious dereliction of duty! And on what grounds was my performance bonus completely deducted?"

He took the payslip, barely glanced at it, and tossed it back onto the desk. Then he turned to look at me, his gaze condescending and dismissive.

"Brooke, you've been working here for a long time. How can you still be so lacking in awareness?

"Kristie just graduated. It's understandable that she's not familiar with the work yet. As a senior employee, instead of helping train her, you're making such a huge scene over a bit of money. What will the other departments say about us?"

In the middle of their heated fight, police sirens echoed outside the building. Moments later, several uniformed officers walked into the conference room."Who's Robert Spradlin? And who's Kristie Madison?"Hearing the police, the two people on the floor instantly stopped fighting and stiffly turned to face the officers.Robert's face, now covered in scratches, turned deathly pale at the sight of the handcuffs, and he nearly fainted on the spot."We received a report suspecting you of embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and commercial bribery," an officer said coldly as he flashed his badge. "You'll need to come with us to the station for questioning."Rose stepped forward and handed over a thick folder. "Officer, this contains all the evidence of their misappropriation of company funds, along with the financial audit report."Robert lost all hope. He knew it was over. He was done for. Without Rose backing him and now facing imminent imprisonment as well, his life was ruined

Robert stared at the ironclad evidence on the screen, his face ashen. His entire body collapsed to the floor.Kristie, meanwhile, cowered in a corner, clutching her face and shaking uncontrollably, not even daring to look up."No! It's not like that! Honey! Rosie! I can explain!"As if he'd suddenly lost his mind, Robert scrambled on all fours toward Rose and tried to grab her legs. "Those are all fake! They're photoshopped! That bitch Brooke fabricated all of it! I'm completely devoted to you!"Rose kicked him away in disgust. "Get off me! Don't touch me with those filthy hands of yours!"Seeing that she wasn't buying it, Robert frantically looked around. Suddenly, he shifted his focus and pointed at Kristie in the corner."It's her!" he snarled, his expression vicious. "That bitch seduced me!"He scrambled up from the floor, dashed over, and grabbed Kristie by the hair. His face twisted into something ugly and feral. The gentle Robert from before was long gone."Honey, this b

Rose's slap left Kristie completely stunned. The latter clutched her swollen cheek as tears instantly welled up."Y-You! How dare you hit me? I'm calling the police!" she shrieked. But she didn't dare meet Rose's eyes. Instead, she desperately looked at Robert for help.By then, Robert's face had already turned deathly pale. His legs had gone completely weak, and he had to hold onto the table just to stay upright. He knew exactly what Rose was capable of."Call the police?" Rose sneered, her gaze sharp as it ran across Kristie's face. "Go ahead, call them. In fact, I was just thinking of showing them how you seduced a married man and embezzled company funds to buy yourself bags and shoes!"Kristie shuddered. The moment she heard "embezzled company funds", her face turned paper-white.Our colleagues, who'd been whispering before, fell completely silent. Everyone perked up their ears, afraid to miss a single word.I stood off to the side, watching it all unfold, feeling an indesc

After I explained everything over the phone, Robert's wife, Rose Klein, absolutely blew up with rage before she said that she would thank me properly later.Once I got home, I contacted a private investigator I'd met during my previous business dealings. His name was Mac Burns, and he was a retired military vet who was efficient and discreet. He'd helped me dig into a few tough competitors before, and his reputation was solid."Mac, I need you to look into someone. The more detailed, the better—especially his family background, marital status, and recent movements."I then sent him photos of Robert and Kristie, requesting full-time surveillance and hard, irrefutable evidence. He replied instantly with a thumbs-up emoji.Three days later, he sent me a zipped folder. The moment I opened it, I drew in a sharp breath. Not only were there photos of Robert and Kristie making out in a garage, but there were also high-definition videos of them checking into a hotel, as well as records o

Half an hour later, Robert was wheeled out of the emergency room. The moment Kristie saw him, she burst into tears and threw herself at him, sobbing uncontrollably."Robert… Are you okay? You scared me to death!"Her wailing drew the attention of nearby patients and their families.Robert weakly raised his hand, wanting to push her away, but he didn't have the strength. Still, I caught the flash of disgust in his eyes. After all, he had a wife and was famously afraid of her.Kristie's behavior was simply asking for trouble."Enough! Stop howling," I coldly interrupted her performance as I stepped forward. "The doctor said he's fine. Do you want the whole hospital to hear you crying?"She was so startled that her crying stopped abruptly, but she still clung tightly to Robert's hand.Pretending not to notice, I said to the orderly, "Please take the patient to his room so he can rest."Once we got to the hospital room, I sent the orderly away and closed the door, leaving just the

I could hardly believe my ears.Kristie had miscalculated my payslip, and I had somehow become the petty and unreasonable one?"Mr. Spradlin, this is a matter of principle!" I said through gritted teeth. "If everyone is as 'unfamiliar' with the work as she is, how is this company even supposed to function? And that five-million-dollar deal—""Enough!" Robert cut me off impatiently. "Stop harping on about that deal. Without the company, without the resources I secured for you, do you really think you could've closed it? Learn to be grateful!"He pointed at Kristie, his tone softening. "Kristie, be more careful next time. As for Brooke's matter, let's just leave it at this. Just fix the payslip and move on."With that, he turned and went back into his office. That was the moment that everything finally clicked.I recalled how, ever since Kristie joined the company, my documents would mysteriously go missing, client calls would be transferred to the wrong people, and even my packag
