Penulis: Sole Authority

Chapter 1

Penulis: Sole Authority
I had just been discharged from the hospital when I got a message about a team dinner. My manager, Robert Spradlin, had specifically emphasized that attendance wasn't optional.

When I arrived at the private room at the restaurant, I froze at the sight of the table full of spicy dishes, taken aback.

Clutching my stomach, I tried to keep my tone calm. "Not many people in our department can handle spicy food, right?"

Kristie Madison, busy taking selfies on her phone, rolled her eyes at my comment. "This is a celebration dinner. It's supposed to be bold and fiery for good luck."

The surrounding colleagues exchanged awkward glances, but no one dared to say a word. Everyone knew that Kristie had been personally hired by Robert, and she basically did whatever she wanted at the office.

I didn't say anything else. I noticed a plate of roasted chicken to the side and decided to serve myself a piece of the chicken breast.

Suddenly, a hand smacked mine hard as I was holding the serving spoon, knocking the piece of chicken onto the table.

Startled, I looked up and met Kristie's eyes that were filled with contempt.

"Brooke Driver, do you have no sense of manners?" she snapped. "That chicken was ordered specifically for Mr. Spradlin to go with his drinks. He's not even here yet, and you're already rushing to eat? Just how greedy are you?"

I froze, staring at her in disbelief. "I'm just really hungry, and I have gastritis, so I can't eat any of the other dishes…"

She scoffed coldly as she crossed her arms.

"You're the most high-maintenance person here in this entire company! You're just a glutton who does nothing but stuff your face. You have no awareness at all! No wonder you're 30 years old and still can't find anyone to marry you!"

I had drunk myself into the hospital just to close that deal, and somehow, I'd become a glutton who did nothing but stuff my face?

Anger shot straight to my head, and I leaped to my feet.

"I was the one who practically drank my life away just to land that five-million-dollar deal. So what if I eat a piece of chicken? You, on the other hand… You've been here for three months, but all you've done is order afternoon tea every day on the company's dime. And you have the nerve to criticize me?"

Her face turned pale from my retort, then her eyes instantly reddened, and tears welled up as if on cue.

Right at that moment, the private room door opened, and Robert walked in with a glowing smile.

"What's going on here? I could hear the arguing from down the hall."

Kristie looked like she'd just seen her savior. She rushed over to him, appearing utterly aggrieved.

"You're finally here, Mr. Spradlin," she started, her voice trembling with sobs. "I nicely organized this celebration dinner, but Brooke complained that the food was bad and even called me useless… The senior employees are bullying me… I don't want to work here anymore…"

Her ability to twist the truth was truly impressive.

I shook with anger as I pointed at the table buried under a variety of spicy food. "Mr. Spradlin, you know I was just hospitalized for stomach bleeding. So why did she order a table full of spicy food? All I did was take a piece of the roasted chicken, and she called me a glutton in front of everyone!"

I thought Robert would at least say something fair. After all, I was the company's top salesperson—the ace up his sleeve.

However, he just glanced at the table, then at the tearful Kristie, and frowned. When he turned to me, there wasn't a trace of concern, only blatant impatience.

"Brooke, you're in the wrong here," he said sternly, his expression hard. "Kristie just graduated and is still very young. It's understandable that she'll overlook things at times. As the oldest member in the department and a senior employee, you should be more understanding. Why are you picking a fight with a newcomer?

"It's just a meal. If you don't like it, don't eat. Was it really necessary to embarrass her in front of everyone? And you even called her useless? If this gets out, people will think our department engages in workplace bullying."

I stared at Robert in disbelief. "Mr. Spradlin, she's the one who called me a glutton who did nothing but stuff my face! And we clearly voted on a completely different menu yesterday. She went ahead and changed everything to spicy food herself!"

"Enough!" Robert barked, slamming his hand on the table. "Brooke, do you think you're all that just because you landed a big contract? You're not even going to listen to me anymore? If this is your attitude, then don't bother staying for this celebration dinner. Don't ruin everyone else's appetite."

A deathly silence fell over the room. Everyone kept their heads down, and not a single person dared to speak up for me.

Behind him, Kristie flashed me a victorious, mocking smile.

Seeing Robert's sleazy face, then Kristie's smug expression, I suddenly felt sick to my stomach.

Killing myself for a boss like this—for a company like this—was a joke.

"Fine. I won't ruin your appetite," I said, grabbing my bag as my gaze coldly swept across the room. "I hope you can enjoy this meal guilt-free!"

In the middle of their heated fight, police sirens echoed outside the building. Moments later, several uniformed officers walked into the conference room."Who's Robert Spradlin? And who's Kristie Madison?"Hearing the police, the two people on the floor instantly stopped fighting and stiffly turned to face the officers.Robert's face, now covered in scratches, turned deathly pale at the sight of the handcuffs, and he nearly fainted on the spot."We received a report suspecting you of embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and commercial bribery," an officer said coldly as he flashed his badge. "You'll need to come with us to the station for questioning."Rose stepped forward and handed over a thick folder. "Officer, this contains all the evidence of their misappropriation of company funds, along with the financial audit report."Robert lost all hope. He knew it was over. He was done for. Without Rose backing him and now facing imminent imprisonment as well, his life was ruined

Robert stared at the ironclad evidence on the screen, his face ashen. His entire body collapsed to the floor.Kristie, meanwhile, cowered in a corner, clutching her face and shaking uncontrollably, not even daring to look up."No! It's not like that! Honey! Rosie! I can explain!"As if he'd suddenly lost his mind, Robert scrambled on all fours toward Rose and tried to grab her legs. "Those are all fake! They're photoshopped! That bitch Brooke fabricated all of it! I'm completely devoted to you!"Rose kicked him away in disgust. "Get off me! Don't touch me with those filthy hands of yours!"Seeing that she wasn't buying it, Robert frantically looked around. Suddenly, he shifted his focus and pointed at Kristie in the corner."It's her!" he snarled, his expression vicious. "That bitch seduced me!"He scrambled up from the floor, dashed over, and grabbed Kristie by the hair. His face twisted into something ugly and feral. The gentle Robert from before was long gone."Honey, this b

Rose's slap left Kristie completely stunned. The latter clutched her swollen cheek as tears instantly welled up."Y-You! How dare you hit me? I'm calling the police!" she shrieked. But she didn't dare meet Rose's eyes. Instead, she desperately looked at Robert for help.By then, Robert's face had already turned deathly pale. His legs had gone completely weak, and he had to hold onto the table just to stay upright. He knew exactly what Rose was capable of."Call the police?" Rose sneered, her gaze sharp as it ran across Kristie's face. "Go ahead, call them. In fact, I was just thinking of showing them how you seduced a married man and embezzled company funds to buy yourself bags and shoes!"Kristie shuddered. The moment she heard "embezzled company funds", her face turned paper-white.Our colleagues, who'd been whispering before, fell completely silent. Everyone perked up their ears, afraid to miss a single word.I stood off to the side, watching it all unfold, feeling an indesc

After I explained everything over the phone, Robert's wife, Rose Klein, absolutely blew up with rage before she said that she would thank me properly later.Once I got home, I contacted a private investigator I'd met during my previous business dealings. His name was Mac Burns, and he was a retired military vet who was efficient and discreet. He'd helped me dig into a few tough competitors before, and his reputation was solid."Mac, I need you to look into someone. The more detailed, the better—especially his family background, marital status, and recent movements."I then sent him photos of Robert and Kristie, requesting full-time surveillance and hard, irrefutable evidence. He replied instantly with a thumbs-up emoji.Three days later, he sent me a zipped folder. The moment I opened it, I drew in a sharp breath. Not only were there photos of Robert and Kristie making out in a garage, but there were also high-definition videos of them checking into a hotel, as well as records o

Half an hour later, Robert was wheeled out of the emergency room. The moment Kristie saw him, she burst into tears and threw herself at him, sobbing uncontrollably."Robert… Are you okay? You scared me to death!"Her wailing drew the attention of nearby patients and their families.Robert weakly raised his hand, wanting to push her away, but he didn't have the strength. Still, I caught the flash of disgust in his eyes. After all, he had a wife and was famously afraid of her.Kristie's behavior was simply asking for trouble."Enough! Stop howling," I coldly interrupted her performance as I stepped forward. "The doctor said he's fine. Do you want the whole hospital to hear you crying?"She was so startled that her crying stopped abruptly, but she still clung tightly to Robert's hand.Pretending not to notice, I said to the orderly, "Please take the patient to his room so he can rest."Once we got to the hospital room, I sent the orderly away and closed the door, leaving just the

I could hardly believe my ears.Kristie had miscalculated my payslip, and I had somehow become the petty and unreasonable one?"Mr. Spradlin, this is a matter of principle!" I said through gritted teeth. "If everyone is as 'unfamiliar' with the work as she is, how is this company even supposed to function? And that five-million-dollar deal—""Enough!" Robert cut me off impatiently. "Stop harping on about that deal. Without the company, without the resources I secured for you, do you really think you could've closed it? Learn to be grateful!"He pointed at Kristie, his tone softening. "Kristie, be more careful next time. As for Brooke's matter, let's just leave it at this. Just fix the payslip and move on."With that, he turned and went back into his office. That was the moment that everything finally clicked.I recalled how, ever since Kristie joined the company, my documents would mysteriously go missing, client calls would be transferred to the wrong people, and even my packag
