It was a relatively small creature, with matte, rough black skin. Its body was about the size of a large crow, and it had a thin, semi-transparent, veil-like tail that moved in a strange way—not so much fluttering as floating through the air, resembling fabric moving underwater. It had no wings, but strong, gripping limbs with curved claws, and that tail, which moved smoothly like a fish. Its face vaguely resembled a monkey’s, only far uglier, and when it opened its mouth predatorily, we could see multiple rows of sharp yellow teeth, from which came a nasty clicking sound.

We didn’t linger to examine the beast. Yafi sliced it in one swing, and we continued running, fully aware that more clashes were inevitable. There were far too many of them, and they were fast.

Glancing back, I saw about a dozen more of these creatures spotting us and swiftly gliding in our direction.

Terrifying. Absolutely terrifying!

A doomed world! Where was my boring stability and daily routine?! I almost missed

“But we’re already married… And I feel like I owe him a marital duty now. But when it comes down to it, I chicken out like a complete coward!”“You won’t be able to run away from him forever,” I smile gently at my friend. “There will come a moment when your barriers fall. Just trust your husband and try not to overthink it. Listen only to your body and your soul—trust your sensations.”“It’s just… the circumstances too,” the brunette admits. “That evening, when Karadeylis married us, we left the palace. Ogis didn’t drag me to the barracks, and not to his parents either. We stayed in a beautiful hotel and all night we just… talked, kissed, and…” She blushed to the tips of her ears. “My husband made me feel good. But I couldn’t… not right away!” she sighs.“The next day, we went to his parents to tell them about the wedding. They were completely stunned—at that point Ogis didn’t even have a steady girlfriend, and suddenly he had a wife! They thought I was just one of his temporary fling

“Izz–aa…” I hear a soft child’s whisper, though the girl’s lips aren’t moving.Smiling, the girl runs away from me, glancing back over her shoulder, and I follow her. Stepping out of the room, I find myself in a dark corridor and see the little girl disappear into one of the rooms. I go after her and run into a door—but it’s locked. No matter what I do, I can’t open it.A strange noise draws my attention. It’s very similar to the sound of a Geiger counter—an odd crackling, only more drawn out, as if in slow motion.I turn around and realize I’m back in the chamber with the well. I see the dark-haired man and the silver-haired girl inside that same bright substance that once swallowed me as well. They are suspended in it like in a cocoon. I can’t clearly make out their faces, but I see that they’re hanging motionless within the glowing mass.Suddenly, the sound returns, and I notice a dark vein appearing inside the bright substance—like black ink spreading through clear water. The dark

  • No Escape From Fate    93 Market Observation...

“Done buying everything already?” the blond guard grumbled. Today, he was also our personal porter for uncontrolled shopping.“Yes,” I answered quickly. “By the way, do you happen to know where Ogis lives?”“Usually in the barracks,” the guy scratched his head. “But here’s the thing… Yesterday we were told that he apparently got married to some girl and was given a month off. His parents live not far from mine. About a forty-minute walk from here.”“No. Not today,” I decided after a moment. “They need some time. We won’t interfere just yet.”“Hey everyone!” we heard a cheerful voice. “Out for a walk?”“Hi! Yes. What are you doing here?” I asked the guard.“I’m on city duty today,” Yaro replied brightly—then froze mid-sentence. “Iolanta?” His brows shot up when the brunette turned toward him.“Hi,” Io said shyly.“Damn! Is that really you?!” the blond couldn’t believe his eyes. I saw Yafi roll his eyes irritably. “You’re gorgeous! How many years has it been since we last saw each other

  • No Escape From Fate    92 Market Observation

We walked all the way to Briol in silence. Well—Yafi walked in silence, sulking like an owl, while Io and I started chirping away together after just a couple of minutes.Iolanta showed me several wonderful little shops that sold exactly what I was looking for.For the young family, I bought a very beautiful and expensive set of dishes—snow-white plates and bowls, hand-painted with silver. I also added a set of exquisite, finely crafted glasses. Things like that always come in handy around the house. And if they don’t like them—well, there’ll be something to smash during an argument. Why not? Especially since Karadeylis is so generous with money! For Vasmiya, I also bought a damn gorgeous set of seductive lingerie. Knowing how modest and shy she is about such things, I’m sure she avoids shops like that like the plague. And that’s a shame! After buying everything we needed, we just wandered around the market—and once again, I spotted a familiar face. This time, Kays was alone, stepping

But I wasn’t going to say that out loud—I value my hands too much.“Alright, enough about me,” Iolanta suddenly remembered herself. “I actually came with your schedule.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.“What schedule?” I asked, peering at the paper but understanding nothing.“Well, Karadeylis needs to get to know the girls better, and the girls need to get to know him too. So they’re making schedules for shared activities—for closer acquaintance,” the brunette explained. “Look—today you’re free, but tomorrow you have a walk and lunch with the king in the garden. So… what should we do today?” she asked with interest, biting into a bun.“Can we go to Briol, to the market?” I smiled. “I want to buy a small gift for a newly formed family.” I couldn’t help thinking of yesterday’s lovebirds and Karadeilis’s unexpected generosity.“Fine,” Io clicked her tongue. “You’ll get your Briol.”After finishing breakfast and feeding Figaro, we got ready. I once agai

After tossing and turning in bed, I couldn’t fall asleep again. It felt as if the moment I closed my eyes, that glowing suspension would swallow me once more—and this time, I wouldn’t be able to escape. What were those dreams about? They felt so… real. And that little girl…Creepy. In the morning, Iolanta came in and was quite surprised to find me not in bed, but already dressed and sitting on the balcony, wrapped in a wide blanket.“Morning. Why are you up so early?” she asked sympathetically, sitting down beside me and setting a tray with a fragrant breakfast on the table. “Did the meeting with the king go badly last night? Yes, he is very scary…”“Morning. No,” I smiled faintly. “The meeting actually went well—better than I expected. I just had terrible nightmares during the night, so I didn’t get much sleep.”“No wonder! I had nightmares too when I saw Karadeylis for the first time,” she admitted, shuddering.“You know, he’s not as scary as he might want to seem,” I said thoughtfu
