Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
"His phone is working, and his social media accounts are active," Detective Reed continued. "He even posted an update yesterday, didn't he?"

I nodded.

"Then we don't have grounds to open a missing-person investigation."

"But that man isn't my husband!" I blurted out. "He's pretending to be Nathan!"

Reed gave me a look normally reserved for people who'd lost their grip on reality.

"Ms. Lawson, you say he isn't your husband, but his identification checks out. So do his friends, family, and online accounts.

"Do you have any proof he's an impostor?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

All I had was my gut feeling, and one secret only Nathan and I shared.

Neither counted as proof.

Reed stood. "Ms. Lawson, if you keep disrupting the station, I'll have to ask you to leave."

I was escorted out.

Outside, the sunlight was so harsh it stung my eyes.

Nathan's parents had divorced when he was little. His mother had raised him on her own. Now I was the person closest to him.

If he was alive, he had to be somewhere, waiting for me to find him.

And if he'd been... killed, then I at least had to find him and bring him home.

My phone buzzed.

A message from "Nathan" appeared, with a photo of lunch.

"The food here is terrible today!"

Exactly the sort of thing he always sent.

I stared at the words, suddenly chilled.

Someone had taken Nathan's phone.

If he wanted to contact me, or leave me some kind of warning...

An idea struck.

I rushed home.

I still had an old phone from college, one I'd stopped using years ago. On it was a shared notes app Nathan used to leave me little love messages when we were dating.

After we upgraded our phones, we'd more or less forgotten about it.

I dug the phone out, plugged it in with trembling hands, and waited for it to start.

Then I opened our old note.

There was a new entry.

Timestamp: fourteen days ago, 6:15 a.m.

Just two words.

"Moonbend Lake."

My pulse raced.

Fourteen days ago. 6:15 in the morning.

The morning Nathan had left for his trip.

He'd wheeled his suitcase to the door, turned around, and kissed me.

"Two weeks. Wait for me, okay?"

That note was his last message to me.

After sending it, he'd vanished.

Moonbend Lake.

The place where we'd had our first date.

Near our college, there was a little park with a lake shaped like a crescent moon. Everyone called it Moonbend.

On our first date, Nathan had given me a ride on the handlebars of his bike. We stopped by the shore, and he pointed at the moon reflected on the water.

"Look," he'd said. "The moon fell into the lake."

I'd laughed and called him cheesy.

"Hey, the moon fell in there first. Don't blame me."

That was the night we'd become a couple.

Whenever we fought afterward, Nathan went to Moonbend to sit by himself. Whenever we made up, it happened there, too.

No one else knew what that place meant to us.

Moonbend Lake.

Nathan had left me a clue.

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed my keys and drove straight there.

That evening, we went to Diane's house. She'd made enough food to feed an army: pot roast, barbecue ribs, and lemon-herb sea bass."Claire, eat up. Look how thin you've gotten."She kept heaping food onto my plate.Nathan sulked beside me."Mom, I've lost weight, too.""You needed to lose weight."I burst out laughing. After dinner, Diane took my hand."Claire, we owe you so much."If it weren't for you, I'd have lost my idiot son."I shook my head. "I did what I had to do.""Mom," Nathan cut in, "could you stop calling me an idiot while I'm sitting right here?""If you're not an idiot, who is? You didn't even know you had a twin brother."Nathan fell silent.Diane's expression changed, too."Mom," he said softly. "Back then... you really didn't know there were two of us?"For a long time, she said nothing."I knew," she finally whispered.Nathan and I froze."But I wasn't allowed to say anything.""Why?""Because a psychic told your grandfather that my firstborn

I ran straight into his arms and burst into tears. He patted my back."Hey, stop crying. Didn't I tell you? You look so ugly when you cry."I punched him lightly."You're the ugly one."He winced dramatically."Easy! Easy! I'm an injured man."Somehow, through my tears, I started laughing."Why didn't you ever tell me you had a twin brother?"He gave me a helpless smile."Because I didn't know. Mom never said a word.""Were you scared when he found you?""Yeah," he admitted. "But not of him.""Then what were you scared of?""That he'd hurt you."My eyes stung. I was about to cry again.Nathan reached up and wiped the tears from my cheeks."Claire.""Yeah?""I'm never keeping secrets from you again."Not one."I studied his face."Then tell me something. What color is the shirt I'm wearing?"He blinked, then examined it with great concentration."Black."I looked down at my forest-green shirt."That's right," I said. "Black."He smiled, and so did I.Three mo

Greenmere Cemetery.Nathan's mother, Diane, had grown up in Greenmere. She'd been diagnosed with cancer the year before and had gone back to her hometown to recuperate. Nathan visited her every month. If Gavin was determined to become Nathan, he'd have to visit her, too.He needed everyone in Nathan's life, even Diane, to accept that he was the real thing.Detective Reed took a team to Greenmere Cemetery while I waited in the car.My phone chimed. It was a message from "Nathan.""Claire, I went to see Mom today. She's doing a lot better. Don't worry."I read it, ice spreading through my veins. He'd already been there. He'd already seen her.He was taking over Nathan's life, one person at a time.Reed's voice crackled over the police radio."We've got him."In an abandoned warehouse behind the cemetery."He's alive."He's alive. Those two words broke me. I slumped against the car seat and cried so hard I couldn't speak.Later, Reed explained that Gavin hadn't planned

Nathan's voice was painfully hoarse."I tried to escape, but I couldn't."That man, Gavin... he's keeping me locked up here."He said he's going to take everything I have."My identity. My house. My job."And you."He lowered his head. His shoulders shook."Claire, I don't know whether he'll hurt you."But there's something I need to ask."If I don't make it back, please look after my mom."And..."He lifted his head, his eyes red."Next time you get a boyfriend, don't pick a color-blind one."We're way too much trouble."He let out a small laugh. Tears began sliding down his face."I'm kidding."Claire, don't cry."You look so ugly when you cry."The video ended there.I stared at the black screen, digging my nails into my palms until they broke the skin.Nathan.Hold on.I'm coming for you.I grabbed my phone and called Detective Reed."Detective, I have proof."My husband was kidnapped. The little park had been abandoned years ago. Half the lake had been filled in, and a construction site sprawled along the shore.I walked around the remaining water three times.Nothing.Finally, I sat on a rock by the bank and forced myself to think.Moonbend...Nathan, what are you trying to tell me?I shut my eyes.Moonbend. Our first date. He'd pointed to the lake and said the moon had fallen into the water.Into the water.I shot to my feet. There used to be a story about something hidden at the bottom of Moonbend Lake.Back in college, people claimed there was a hollow in the rocky lakebed. When the water rose, it disappeared beneath the surface; during a dry spell, it was exposed.Nathan and I had gone looking for it once, but never found it.It wasn't the dry season now.Still, if he'd hidden something underwater...I looked at the murky surface and set my jaw.I took off my shoes, rolled up my pant legs, and waded in.The water only reached my knees, but the
