Tom’s POV

“Lucy, how is your father? Are you okay?”

Perfect timing.

As soon as I saw them, I laid on the charm. There was rarely a time that Lucy could resist my smile and kind words-even when they came with veiled venomous insults.

When I blackmailed Lucy into another million, I knew that she couldn’t possibly come up with it on her own-not without the help of her family.

And of course, I was right.

Blair had been keeping an eye on her since we moved out, tracking her movements wherever she could. It was through her sly detective-like skills that we found out that not only had Lucy been in contact with her parents, but that her father had fallen ill.

“What are you doing here, Tom?” She asked, standing like a bloated brick wall, protectively positioned in front of her mother.

I took everything in me not to roll my eyes and throw an insult her way. But I knew that I needed to play it cool. For now at least.

“I told you, dear. I only came here to check on you and see how everyone was

Lucy’s POVThe question was so left-field I panicked. Should I tell him? Was I even supposed to tell him?“I-I didn’t know anything about that,” I lied before I could think any further about it. It was like word vomit. “Where…where did you hear that from?” I asked, suddenly wondering if I could get more information out of himMatthew suddenly shifted awkwardly in his sheet, his expression suddenly turning sheepish. Suddenly, I was glad that I hadn’t confirmed his suspicions.“I’d heard something about it-your father mentioned it before,” he told me. He then met my gaze. “Apparently, he hasn’t told you yet.” The more I listened the more sure I was that I’d made the right decision in not saying that I knew about that money. As it suddenly came to mind that after mom told me that she and dad left money in my name, she'd also said no one knew except her and my father. So how did uncle Matthew know if dad never even confided in him? I realized then that I needed to keep being cautious co

Lucy’s POVMatthew’s assistant emailed me to come at eight but I came half an hour early just to cover all bases. I knew he’d accept no less.“Hi, good morning. I’m here to see Matthew Vance.”The middle-aged beauty paused, and watched me closely. I was clearly an irritant to her workflow. “Your name?” she said flatly.“Lucy.” I answered. “Lucy Whitmore, to see Matthew Vance.” I reiterated with a stern urgency.“Well, I don’t see you here for an appointment, Lucy,” she derided. “You must have been in the wrong place.”I retorted impatiently, “I assure you I have the right place. Now please. I need to-”“And I said, you don’t get to see Mr. Vance without an appointment. He doesn’t have time to entertain random walk-ins.”I wasn’t going to get anywhere with this woman. Pulling out my phone, I immediately dialed Matthew Vance’s number and each time, it went straight to voice mail.“Damn it!” I whispered.“Ma’am, since you don't have an appointment, you need to leave,” said the reception

Lucy’s POVAfter what happened with Tom, mom was practically inconsolable. She couldn’t stay here in such a stressful mood.“Carl, can you please escort my mother home?” I requested their head of security.“Of course.” Carl replied.“Mom, I’ll be here, and I’ll keep you apprised of anything that happens okay? But you need to go home and get away from this stress, okay?”She parted her lips to rebut again but I shook my head. I wasn’t hearing any of it. Dad was already in a precarious condition, I couldn’t afford to risk my mother suffering the same fate.“Mom, dad wouldn’t want you stressing yourself like this. Please.” I begged. She knew that I was right about dad’s concern for her. It was the smoking gun that made her finally agree to go home. “Fine.”I smiled. “If anything changes, I’ll immediately alert Carl, and he will bring you here straightaway, okay?”“Good or bad?” Mom made me promise.“Good or bad.”She left shortly after, but I made sure that a few others remained along th

Lucy’s POVThere was nothing more to do after my terrible conversation with Tom, but to return to the hospital and see to my father. And it was shortly after I did that Amanda called to check on me.“Yeah, I’m okay. I’m so sorry that I haven’t been in contact. I’ve had a family emergency, and I’ll need a few more days. Is that okay?”She readily agreed, and I was glad for it. Yet another favor I owed to Amanda. I was ending the call when mom came into the room. “Who was that?” She asked in a low murmur, still visibly distraught by the condition of dad.“Just a friend, mom.” I sighed as we stood by each other watching as dad lay there, helpless, and still unconscious.“He fell ill while you were gone,” Mom choked, her hands shakily covering mouth with the damp tissue she’d been using to dab at her tears. My head fell back against the wall and I closed my eyes, taking deep breaths, trying not to completely crash out right there in front of mom.“What did they say was wrong?” I asked.“

  • No Longer His Ugly Wife   CHAPTER FORTY

Alaric’s POVI was on my last contract for the day at work. It was time to leave. The Kingsley car picked me up, and Ray, who had been running errands on my behalf was already outside waiting for me when I came out of the building.“Mr. Kingsley,” he nodded in short greeting. I acknowledged him before sliding into the back of the limo. Ray was shortly behind. “So, what news have you had of Lucy and my proposition?”Surely, she couldn’t have come up with the money that she needed to get out of her predicament. She should have called at any time now. Ray looked at me, curious , weighing down his brow. “You haven’t heard, have you?” he asked.I rolled my eyes. “Ray, I don't have time for this. You know I’ve had a busy day. So if it had nothing to do with Kingsley business then no, I haven’t heard anything. Now what of Lucy and the call?” I pressed impatiently.“This is about Lucy, Alaric.” He pulled out a tabloid, and handed it to me. “I doubt Ms. Brookes has been thinking at all about
