Chapter 3

Author: Cap It
From that day on, a chart appeared on the refrigerator door.

Breakfast: one egg.

Lunch: 80 grams of lean meat and 300 grams of vegetables.

Dinner: no carbohydrates.

8,000 steps a day. No eating after seven in the evening.

Gracie even brought me a set of smaller food containers.

"Fill the container so it looks full. Pregnant women are more likely to trick their brains into thinking they've eaten enough that way."

I looked at the container, barely bigger than my palm. I was so hungry I didn't even have the energy to get angry anymore.

On the third night, I woke up from hunger twice.

On the fourth day, I crouched down to tie my shoelaces, and my vision went black. I pitched forward and hit my head against the shoe cabinet.

Greyson came out of the bedroom when he heard the noise. "What happened?"

I sat on the floor for a long time, too dazed to answer.

He reached out, felt my forehead, and pulled me to my feet. "Is your blood sugar low? Gracie said this is normal. Your body reacts when it starts burning fat."

He took half a cracker from the cupboard and handed it to me. "Eat this."

I stared at the cracker, suddenly remembering the second year of our marriage, when I was hospitalized with acute gastritis.

Greyson had worried that the hospital food wouldn't taste good, so he'd gotten up at six every morning to make me oats.

Back then, he was always saying, "Your stomach is so sensitive. Even the thought of you going hungry for a minute breaks my heart."

Now I was carrying his child, hungry enough to collapse, and all he was willing to give me was half a cracker.

I didn't take it. My voice came out low and quiet. "Give me the whole thing. I'm really hungry."

He was silent for two seconds, then broke off the other half and ate it himself. "Rules are rules. We can't keep making exceptions."

That night, I lay with my back to him, crying until half my pillow was soaked.

The next day was one of Greyson's friends' birthdays. I hadn't wanted to go, but he tossed the dress I'd worn before pregnancy onto the bed. "Wear this."

The zipper wouldn't go past my waist. I stared at my swollen belly in the mirror. "It doesn't fit."

Without even looking up, he said, "Suck it in."

I was almost laughing from sheer frustration. "There's a baby in my belly. Sucking in my stomach isn't going to make it disappear."

Greyson irritably yanked off his tie. "Then find something that doesn't make you look so fat."

In the end, I changed into a loose black knit dress.

Greyson didn't speak to me again the entire drive.

When we arrived at the restaurant, he tugged at the hem of my dress. "Once we're inside, don't eat too much. Don't embarrass me."

My fingers stiffened. Before I could say anything, he had already pushed open the private dining room door. More than a dozen people were seated inside.

The moment I walked in, someone burst out laughing. "Hey, how many months pregnant are you? Your belly isn't even that big, but the rest of you has already gone round."

The others joined in.

"Greyson, have you been feeding her too well?"

"At this rate, won't she weigh 150 pounds after giving birth?"

"Forget 150. Keep going like this, and she'll be so heavy by the end of the month she'll crush you flat."

The whole table erupted in laughter.

I stood at the doorway, gripping the hem of my dress.

Greyson acted as though he hadn't heard a thing. He simply pulled out a chair and sat down.

Someone gave him a knowing look. "Seriously, man, didn't you used to have such high standards when it came to women? How does it feel bringing your wife out now? Must be a pretty big letdown."

I instinctively looked at Greyson.

But he merely lifted his teacup and took a sip. "What can I do? The moment she got pregnant, she started eating like a pig. It's like she doesn't know when to stop."

Another round of laughter swept across the table.

I stood there as my face grew hotter and hotter.

Gracie was seated beside Greyson. She took the initiative to pull out a chair for me. "Alana, sit here."

There was a pot of my favorite seafood chowder on the table.

I'd barely picked up the ladle when Greyson pressed my arm down. "Too creamy."

Everyone's eyes turned toward us. I slowly withdrew my hand. For the rest of the meal, all I ate were a few pieces of lettuce.

When dinner ended, the elevator was out of order. The private dining room was on the sixth floor.

By the time I reached the third floor, my belly had started tightening.

"Greyson, I can't walk anymore. My stomach hurts…"

He was looking down at a message from Gracie. When he heard me, his expression turned ugly. "Alana, can you stop using your stomach as an excuse every time I ask you to exercise?"

Seeing me gripping the railing, Greyson turned and headed downstairs. "Take your time, then. I'll wait for you in the car."

By the time I finally made it to the ground floor, he'd already been sitting in the car for more than twenty minutes.

A cake he'd bought for Gracie sat on the passenger seat.

Greyson followed my gaze. "It's for Gracie. Her blood sugar gets low sometimes."

I suddenly burst out laughing. So when Gracie's blood sugar dropped, she deserved an entire cake made with real cream.

When mine dropped, I deserved half a cracker.

Six months later, I was eating three regular meals a day again.Every now and then, Jaylin still kept an eye on me. "Don't just drink coffee. What did you have for breakfast?"I'd pull a sandwich out of my bag to show her.I used to think having someone control what I ate was terrifying. Only later did I realize that the truly terrifying thing wasn't someone reminding you to eat. It was someone using food to punish you.Gracie's studio eventually shut down. She deleted every article involving me and issued a public apology.I never bothered to find out where she'd gone afterward.Greyson rarely contacted me either. He sent only one message a month: [How have you been feeling lately?]I never replied. At the company's annual physical, the last item on the list was a weigh-in.When it was my turn, I stood in front of the digital scale, suddenly unable to make my feet move. The nurse looked up. "Is something wrong?"I took several deep breaths. "I'm fine."I took off my shoes

The night I received the job offer, Greyson signed the divorce papers. When he handed the documents to the lawyer, he couldn't seem to let go."I have one more question. If our second baby were still alive, would you still divorce me?"The room fell silent for a few seconds.I nodded. "Yes."The last glimmer of hope in his eyes went out. "Why?"I suddenly remembered that night at the police station.Twenty dollars. Half a burger left uneaten. And his words: "Two nights in a cell might do her some good.""Because I'd already become afraid of you before anything happened to the baby."Greyson's expression stiffened. "Afraid of me?"I nodded with a bitter smile. "Afraid of stepping on a scale. Afraid of eating. Afraid my bank card would suddenly stop working."Afraid that if I gained a pound today, I wouldn't have money to buy anything tomorrow."Most of all, I was afraid that one day I'd get so hungry I couldn't stand it anymore, and you'd accuse me of giving in to my piggish

Gracie's article was taken down the next day.I submitted the screenshots and my medical records to the platform and filed a formal complaint. Her studio wasn't licensed to provide medical services, yet she'd been advertising pregnancy weight-loss programs and promoting carbohydrate restriction to control weight for a long time. Before long, several other pregnant women began leaving comments. One said she'd been told to do cardio on an empty stomach.Another said she'd been advised to eat only two meals a day because she'd been gaining weight too quickly.Gracie started calling me, but I didn't answer a single call. Then she showed up outside Jaylin's building and confronted me."Alana, are you determined to drive me to my grave?" She took off her sunglasses. The injury she'd claimed would disfigure her face had faded to a faint red mark.I looked at her. "Aren't you the expert at controlling things? Then why don't you try controlling your emotions?"Gracie's face turned liv

Two days later, Jaylin handed me her phone. "Take a look at this."There was an article from six months earlier on Gracie's studio's social media account. The headline read: [Uncontrolled Pregnancy Weight Gain Isn't the Problem. The Real Challenge Is Getting Family Members to Be Tough.]The photos didn't show the woman's face, but I recognized myself at a glance. I was wearing the gray pajamas I'd had on when I was four months pregnant.Beside the photo was a chart of my weight, from 110 pounds to 127, then 136.2.The article said: [Case A: Poor self-control. Frequently requests additional meals, claiming the fetus needs more nutrition.][After eliminating carbohydrates at dinner, increasing daily steps, and imposing financial restrictions through family members, her rate of weight gain dropped significantly.]I stared at the screen for a long time, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone. Those days when I'd been so ashamed of myself that I couldn't bear to loo

Jaylin took me back to her place.By the time we had driven a long way from the hospital, I realized Greyson was still standing outside the entrance.Jaylin glanced in the rearview mirror. "Are you really going through with the divorce?"I rested my hand on my now-flat stomach. "Both of my babies have already made the decision for me."Jaylin didn't try to talk me out of it again. For the next few days, I threw up everything I ate.It wasn't because my stomach couldn't handle the food. Every time I took another bite, Greyson's voice echoed in my head. "Too greasy. No carbs. You've gained weight again."When Jaylin saw me drinking only half a bowl of broth, she slammed her cutlery onto the table in anger. "Alana, you don't need anyone's permission to eat anymore."I sat there stunned for a long time before finally picking up my spoon again. On the sixth day, Greyson showed up.When I opened the door, his eyes immediately fell on the bowl of homemade beef broth on the table. I looked at him and lowered my head to touch my stomach, which had already flattened. "The baby is gone."All the color drained from Greyson's face. "What do you mean, gone?"He rushed toward me in a few strides. "Alana, did you get an abortion?"I stared at him for two seconds before suddenly bursting out laughing. But as I laughed, tears began streaming down my face."Didn't you keep complaining that I was fat? Well, there you go. I've lost more than ten pounds all at once."Greyson reached out to grab me.The nurse immediately stepped between us. "Sir, she just had an induced delivery. Don't touch her."Greyson looked at her in disbelief. "Induced delivery?"The nurse frowned. "She suffered a placental abruption and was already hemorrhaging heavily when she arrived. We couldn't save the baby."On top of that, she'd been severely undernourished for a prolonged period and was seriously anemic. She also had obvious bruising from an impact injury."Greyson went completely rigi
