Chapter 33

Author: Ginger Sue
Winter said calmly, "It's nothing, Florence."

Florence sighed. "You can fool the others, but you can't fool me. Where's your wedding ring? Why aren't you wearing it tonight?"

Winter froze. Her ring finger, which had a faint white mark, curled slightly. "I left in a rush and forgot to wear it."

"You've treasured that diamond ring like it's your life for five whole years. How could you forget to wear it?" Florence's temper flared, and her blood pressure spiked. "Is it because of that Lynch woman? She's been clinging to Joshua again, hasn't she? Just wait. I'll get back at her on your behalf!"

Winter quickly grabbed her trembling arm and soothed her. "It's not like that, Florence. You're overthinking this."

"Win, I just don't understand. You two have shared a bed and a life for five years, and you gave him a son." Florence's voice was thick with frustration and helplessness. "How is it that you still can't win Joshua's heart?"

Winter pursed her lips. In truth, even a heart of stone

Joshua moved quickly down the dim, silent corridor. His steps were brisk and resolute. At last, he came to a stop in front of Heather's bedroom door. Just as he lifted his hand to knock, the door swung open.Vincent nearly bumped into Joshua as he stepped out of the shadowy room. After a brief pause, he offered a slight bow. "Mr. Stroud, is there something you need?" he asked.Joshua's chest rose and fell. "I need to see my mother. There's something I must tell her.""I'm sorry, Mr. Stroud," Vincent said, "but Mrs. Stroud is about to retire for the night—""That means she's still awake. Let me in."Vincent's eyes darkened. "I'm sorry. Mrs. Stroud is exhausted and needs to rest."Joshua's lip curled into a sneer. "You may choose to put my mother first, but do you realize who stands as the head of the Stroud family?" He thrust his arm forward. "Move!"With a loud crash, Vincent's back slammed into the door, forcing it open."Mom," Joshua called out. His face hardened the moment

After checking on Terence, Joshua felt unsettled. He stepped out onto the balcony alone, letting the cold wind bite at him. A cigarette rested between his fingers.Images kept flashing in his mind like a relentless slideshow, jumping between Elijah and Ezekiel. Eventually, his gaze locked on Ezekiel's face.Hailing from a noble background, Ezekiel was confident and self-assured. Few could ever make Joshua feel intimidated, but Ezekiel was an exception.Yesterday, Joshua had watched Winter laughing and talking with Ezekiel and Alistair. The warm, harmonious scene struck him like a knife, leaving an uneasy weight in his chest."Winter, you frivolous woman! How can you neglect our beloved son to celebrate another child's birthday…" Joshua's eyes hardened as he crushed the burning cigarette in his bare hand. "You truly never cease to amaze me!"Throughout his life, Joshua had never known such warmth. Why should another man possess what he had always lacked?Suddenly, faint voices rea

Not wanting to face Joshua, Winter turned to leave."Winter!" Joshua shouted, striding up to her. He grabbed her wrist, his voice low and hoarse. "After everything that's happened, it's only right that you give me a proper explanation.""Mr. Stroud, you're not blind, are you? You saw everything yourself. Why would you need me to explain?" Winter summoned all her strength and wrenched her hand free. "I have nothing nice to say. Do you really want me to keep going?"Joshua's chest rose and fell, yet his voice remained unnervingly calm. "The very least you can do is apologize to my mother. She's your elder, after all."Heather and Jessica were stunned.Joshua was usually domineering and unyielding toward Winter. Why was his behavior so unusual today? Was he truly asking for nothing more than an apology? It felt ridiculously inadequate."She's my elder, huh?" Winter sneered. As she studied Joshua's flustered expression, her lips curved into a cold, cutting smile. Even in her scorn, h

Everyone was stunned into silence, unable to believe that Winter had openly challenged the matriarch of the Stroud family. Was this really the same timid, meek woman they had always known?"W-What did you just say?" Heather stammered. Her eyes widened, and her pale face slowly turned red."Did you really go to Mr. Morrison only to find out Jessica's and Joshua's birth charts are a mismatch?" Winter snorted, clearly entertained by the situation. "It appears all your scheming and calculations were for nothing. Even bringing me into the family couldn't wake Philip from his coma."Mr. Morrison was clearly nothing but a fraud. It would have been far better if Joshua had simply married Jessica back then. Not only would Joshua have had the woman of his dreams, but you'd also have a daughter-in-law who met your standards. Everyone would have been happy, right?"All eyes fell on Winter's cold, sharp face. The maids shivered, a cold sweat prickling their skin.Philip remained the Stroud fam

Though Gretchen had meant well, her actions had only made things worse.…Just as Winter entered the living room, Heather's piercing voice struck from behind. "Stop right there!"Winter froze, her cold gaze cutting straight to her. That single shout was enough to summon every maid in Rippleview Court. They remained in the shadows, ready to see the drama unfold.Back when Joshua and Winter lived under the same roof as Heather, it was common for Heather to "impose rules" on Winter. Still, she always waited until Joshua was away.Privately, the maids sighed over the hollow promise of marrying into money. Not only was Winter without her family's support, but she also had to endure a cold, distant husband and an overbearing mother-in-law. She had no dignity to speak of.How was her life any different from that of a mistress? Upon reflection, the distinction was clear—exclusivity. Her body belonged to Joshua and no one else, given completely of her own volition. "Winter, how could y

Winter's expression faltered."Terry is so pitiful… Mrs. Stroud, I feel so heartbroken for him!" Jessica choked out, tears streaming down her face. "I hate that I can't take away his suffering. I'm so useless… If heaven wants to punish someone, it might as well punish me. Why must Terry be the one to suffer?""Jessica, your health isn't exactly great either. Please don't speak so harshly about yourself," Heather said, her eyes glistening as she studied Jessica's distressed face. She gently patted her shoulder and added, "Joshua is constantly traveling the globe while carrying the weight of the family business on his own. It's impossible for him to handle everything by himself. From now on, we'll be counting on you to take good care of Terry."Even though Terence had a biological mother, Heather still chose to entrust him to another woman. It was as though Winter no longer existed in her eyes.Dabbing away her tears, Jessica said resolutely, "Please don't worry, Mrs. Stroud. I will
