Chapter 1

The moment the ring touched the desk, my wife Sophia Walker's phone rang. Ethan Cole's name lit up the screen. He was her childhood sweetheart.

The impatience on Sophia's face vanished instantly, replaced by a tenderness I rarely got to see.

"Don't worry, Ethan. I'm handling your case personally. I'm already on the fifth draft of your defense. Everything's going to be fine."

Her voice held a patience and tenderness she rarely showed me.

Ethan's hearty laughter came through the phone, and Sophia smiled in response. Meanwhile, the wedding ring I'd placed on her desk sat right in front of her, yet she hadn't spared it a single glance.

My dad, Edward Morgan, had no idea what was happening. All he saw was Sophia talking on the phone, and he seemed to think he'd interrupted something important.

He cautiously stepped back, but the melting snow dripping from his umbrella had already left a small, dark stain on the expensive carpet.

The moment he noticed it, panic flashed across his face. He hurriedly crouched down and tried to wipe the stain away with his sleeve, mumbling apologies as he scrubbed. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I've dirtied your carpet…"

But the harder he rubbed, the bigger the stain seemed to grow. His eyes reddened with desperation.

The sight of Dad crouched on the floor, frantically trying to clean up after himself, made my eyes sting.

"Dad, stop. You don't have to do that." I crouched beside him and reached for his arm.

He looked up at me with an apologetic, almost ingratiating smile. "It's my fault. I should've been more careful. Sophia's busy, and I shouldn't have bothered her. Don't argue with her over this, alright? She's a high-powered attorney. Of course she's got a lot on her plate."

Then he reached inside his coat and pulled out a bag of homemade cookies.

"I made these chocolate cookies for you. I know they're your favorite. Share some with Sophia when she has time, okay?"

He pressed the cookies into my hands, then turned and left. I stood there holding the bag, which felt as heavy as lead. It felt as heavy as lead.

…

When I returned to the office after seeing Dad out, I found the door slightly ajar.

The moment I pushed it open, I froze. Ethan had arrived while I was gone. He was sitting on Sophia's desk, wearing one of her suit jackets, his legs swinging carelessly over the edge.

I recognized the jacket immediately. It was Sophia's spare, which she kept on a rack in the break room. She had never allowed anyone else to touch it.

Once, while tidying up the break room for her, I'd accidentally brushed against the jacket. She'd frowned, sent it straight to the dry cleaner, and warned me never to touch her belongings again.

After three years of marriage, I knew just how obsessive she was about cleanliness. Yet here was Ethan, lounging in her jacket and casually drinking from her glass of water, while Sophia showed no trace of displeasure.

When she noticed me, her expression remained unchanged, as though nothing about the scene was unusual.

Ethan, however, was the first to speak.

He hopped off the desk and flashed me a shameless grin. "Blake, don't be mad at Sophia, okay? You know I've got a short fuse. I only broke that woman's ribs because I was standing up for a buddy. Sophia's been up for days working on my defense, trying to get me out of this mess."

As he spoke, he sauntered over and draped an arm around Sophia's shoulders casually, as if he owned the place.

"Besides, why don't we just let that whole 30 thousand dollars thing with your dad go? No need to bother my friend with something like that, right?"

Sophia swatted his hand away, but there was no real annoyance in her voice. "You really have no idea how strong you are, do you? If you get yourself into trouble again, don't expect me to bail you out next time."

Then she turned to me, and every trace of warmth vanished from her face.

She pointed at the wedding ring on her desk, frowning. "Put your ring back on. Stop pulling these childish stunts every time you don't get your way."

The day Dad was discharged from the hospital, Sophia showed up. She knelt outside his hospital room in a wrinkled shirt, her hair disheveled and her eyes sunken. In just half a month, she'd aged ten years. "Dad." Her voice was hoarse as she apologized. "I'm so sorry." Dad stood in the doorway, looking at her without saying a word. "Blake, I'm begging you. Please withdraw your complaint. Please stop pursuing this." She turned to me, tears streaming down her face. "The bar association is moving to revoke my law license, and the prosecutor's office intends to charge me with perjury. If I'm convicted, my entire life will be ruined." Still on her knees, she shuffled toward me and clutched my pants."I know I made a mistake. I shouldn't have helped Ethan, and I shouldn't have ignored what happened to your dad. I wasn't thinking straight. I was completely blinded by my own selfishness… but I really do love you, Blake." She then added, "I just never knew how to treat you right. I

I rose from the first row of the gallery and walked calmly toward the witness stand. Dressed in a sharply tailored business suit, with my short hair neatly styled, I strode into the courtroom with calm confidence. The moment Sophia saw me, her pupils contracted. The pen slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the table. Ethan's face twisted in horror. I walked over to the witness stand and handed a USB drive to the court clerk. "Your Honor, the surveillance footage submitted by defense attorney Sophia Walker has been deliberately edited to conceal the truth and misrepresent what happened. It is fabricated evidence." My voice remained steady as I continued, "I'm submitting the complete, unedited surveillance footage from the night of the incident, along with an audio recording of defense attorney Sophia Walker coaching the defendant, Ethan Cole, to give false testimony and helping him fabricate evidence.""Blake! You're making baseless accusations!" Sophia shot to her feet,

Over the next few days, I stayed at the hospital, accompanying Dad for his medical tests during the day while working with Jack at night to organize the evidence and prepare for the divorce proceedings. On the third day after surgery, Dad finally regained consciousness. When he opened his eyes and saw me sitting beside his bed, the first thing he said was, "Blake, don't worry about me. Just don't tell Sophia what happened. I don't want to cause her any trouble." Even now, he was still worried about inconveniencing Sophia, still afraid of upsetting his daughter-in-law or giving her another reason to take her anger out on me."Dad." I took a deep breath before continuing. "Sophia and I are getting a divorce."He froze, staring at me, his lips trembling as though he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words. Then tears began streaming down his face."Is this all because of me? I shouldn't have gone after that scammer. I shouldn't have—""Dad." I took his hand and spoke s

I flipped through the bank statements, so furious that I couldn't help laughing. Six months ago was when Ethan had returned from overseas and Sophia had started using her busy schedule at the law firm as an excuse to stay out all night.Throughout our three years of marriage, I'd always assumed she simply didn't love me. I'd never imagined she'd go so far as to strip me of even the dignity of walking away from our marriage with my head held high. "She wants me to leave with nothing." I closed the file, a cold glint flashing in my eyes. "Then I'll make sure she's the one who loses everything." …That afternoon, Sophia took Ethan to a private club on the outskirts of the city to wine and dine a few influential contacts. I took a cab straight home. The moment I stepped inside, I headed for the study Sophia had strictly forbidden me from entering. Sophia had always been arrogant and controlling. In her eyes, I was nothing more than a clueless househusband who knew nothing abo

Sophia was momentarily speechless, but a second later, she turned to the police officer and slipped back into her professional lawyer's demeanor. "Officer, this is a private family matter, and the suspect has already agreed to return the stolen money—" "Since when does returning stolen money erase the crime of inflicting serious bodily injury?" I cut in sharply."Ms. Walker, you know perfectly well that she's now a suspect in a separate case involving serious bodily injury, yet you're still trying to use money to strike a deal and secure her release on bail. Are you abusing your legal knowledge to obstruct justice?"The mediation room fell deathly silent. The officer glanced at the critical condition notice before snatching the prepared letter of forgiveness off the table. His expression hardened as he turned to Linda."The bail is revoked. Take her back into custody!" he announced. "What?" Linda's face twisted in panic as she whipped around to glare at Sophia. "What the h

Jack and I arrived at the police station in no time. The moment we stepped inside, I spotted Sophia and Ethan sitting together in the mediation room. Ethan clung to Sophia's arm, a smug smile plastered across his face."Sophia, I knew you were the best." He looked nothing like the laid-back "buddy" he'd pretended to be at the law firm. Sitting across from them was a short-haired woman with a rough, streetwise look. Jack leaned toward me and lowered his voice. "That's Linda Mitchell. She's got several shell companies registered under her name and specializes in contract fraud. Your dad's 30 thousand dollars went straight into one of her accounts." Sophia looked up and spotted me, her brows immediately drawing together. "What are you doing here?" she demanded, barely concealing her irritation. "I already told you I'd have the finance department transfer 20 thousand dollars to you tomorrow. Why are you making a scene here?"Ethan released her arm and put on an innocent express
