Chapter 2

Author: Muddle Egg
Across the room, everyone was crowded around Miles, looking at the picture.

I opened my phone and messaged my boss.

[About making me a partner, what you mentioned yesterday—is that still on the table?]

The reply came instantly, and I could feel the sarcasm through the screen.

[Oh? The great family pillar can leave home for a five-year overseas assignment? What, you're not worried the house will collapse without you?]

Last year, my boss had already given me one shot at this. But when I told my family about the assignment, every one of them was against it.

Mom said the whole family depended on me. If I left, everything would fall apart.

Audrey had looked troubled too.

"Gavin, we're not getting any younger. I'm not asking you to support a family, but at the very least, you can't go that far away."

Back then, I believed my parents needed me, and Audrey needed me. So I stayed, and I didn't mind.

But now, watching the happy family of four across the room, I couldn't lie to myself anymore.

I lowered my head and typed one line.

[I'm not worried anymore. Start the process.]

The moment the message went through, Audrey's voice sounded right next to my ear.

"What process? I've been calling you, and you didn't even hear me."

I locked my phone.

"Nothing. Just work. Weren't you meeting a client today?"

Her eyes slid away from my phone. She looked a little uneasy.

"It got rescheduled. I didn't have time to tell you."

She didn't have time to tell me, but she had time to go shopping with my brother?

The words circled my tongue, and in the end, all that came out was a bitter smile.

She was my girlfriend, yet every free moment she had went to my brother.

She went shopping with him, went to concerts with him, even went to his class reunions posing as his girlfriend.

I'd questioned it. I'd been upset about it.

But my parents would just say, "Miles is still a kid. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?"

And Audrey would frown every time.

"Gavin, you're his older brother. Don't be so petty."

But just once, I wanted to be the irresponsible one. I wanted to go out with friends, go shopping, and buy things I liked, like a normal person.

That night, Mom asked Audrey to stay for dinner, and Miles announced he wanted to move out.

"I already found a place. An apartment on the west side of town."

I glanced at Mom, waiting for her to shoot him down the way she'd shot me down.

But she just put another slice of meat on his plate like always, her voice full of worry.

"If you live alone, who's going to cook for you? Will you have enough money? How about I help you with rent?"

My head snapped up.

When I said I wanted to move out, Mom had been just as anxious.

Only back then, she'd been in a hurry to accuse me of wanting to get away from them, of not caring about my own parents.

Apparently some sons didn't have to prove they were good sons.

"It's okay, Mom."

Miles grinned and patted Audrey on the shoulder.

"I'll be living right next door to Audrey. She'll take care of me. Right?"

For a second, I thought I'd heard him wrong.

He said it so naturally, as if that was how it should be.

I looked at Audrey on reflex. To my shock, she seemed to agree, her eyes full of a doting smile.

"Don't worry, Linda. I'll take good care of Miles for you."

Mom looked relieved.

I set my glass down on the table. The soft clink drew everyone's attention.

I pressed my fingertips into my palm and spoke quietly.

"Audrey, did you forget who your boyfriend is?"

The room went silent for a moment.

Audrey reacted first. The smile dropped from her face.

"Gavin, Miles is your brother. Are you seriously going to be this petty?"

Mom glared at me accusingly.

"You're even jealous of Miles? Why are you always the one making a fuss?"

Miles lowered his head and said softly, "Gavin, if you don't want me to, I won't move..."

Mom shot me a look and started comforting him.

"Don't mind him. You go ahead and move. What does it have to do with him?"

Audrey started coaxing him too.

"It's okay. Your brother will be fine tomorrow. You don't have to tiptoe around him."

I took a deep breath, got up, and went back to my room.

Fine. Let them do what they want.

Family or love, I didn't want any of it anymore.

After that, Audrey came back a few more times.Sometimes she waited for me outside the office. Sometimes she brought me food from back home.I acted like she wasn't there, until one time she showed up just as Nora was video-calling me.When I spotted Audrey in the distance, I let out an irritated sigh.Nora was immediately annoyed."You're not even a partner yet, and you already have the nerve to be sick of me?"I burst out laughing. To everyone else, Nora was an ice queen. Only with me and the other two founding employees did she let her true chatterbox nature show.I didn't explain. I just said, "Let me borrow you for a second."I walked up to Audrey and showed her Nora's annoyed face on the screen."This is my new girlfriend. Could you stop coming around now?"Audrey stood frozen. Her mouth opened, then closed again.I left before she could say anything.I never saw her again after that.Nora, on the other hand, couldn't look at me, and her voice went small."I-I've go

Gavin's POVIt wasn't until my third month overseas that I finally got used to the pace of life there.Nora gave me a raise, too.It all started one day when I was giving her a work update over video. The moment the call connected, there I was, eating a sad microwave dinner. On the other end, her eyes went wide."You did that on purpose, didn't you, Gavin? Trying to remind me I'm overworking you?"One of the other founding employees from the early days laughed in the background."Being all alone in a foreign country isn't easy. Why don't you give our Gavin a raise? Don't worry, I won't mind!"I swallowed my bite and didn't say anything. The truth was, I just hadn't gotten used to the food there yet, but I didn't feel like explaining.I'd never had any savings, so I really did need the money.Besides, I still hadn't paid Nora back for the phone. In the end, I got a small raise. After that, every time I gave an update, I'd accidentally let my miserable situation show. But fr

Third-person POVBack home, after Gavin left, things only got worse. There was no one to remind Rick to take his blood pressure medication, and no one to help Linda with the housework.Linda kept sending Miles and Audrey out to find Gavin's address. They went to his company several times, but on Nora's orders, they never even made it through the front door. When they came home empty-handed yet again, Linda couldn't hold back anymore."Miles, why don't you move back home for a while? It's so empty around here."Or maybe you could hand over part of your paycheck too, and I'll hold on to it for you?"Miles, who had always been the obedient, sensible one in her eyes, refused on the spot."Mom, you can't be serious. I'm an adult. I don't need you holding on to my money."Besides, I'm old enough to have a life of my own. You can't expect me to keep revolving around you forever!"Linda was a little put out."Your brother did it, and he was doing just fine!"Miles couldn't help ro

Gavin's POVBy then, I was already on a plane headed overseas.Next to me sat Nora Winslow, my boss, who'd been chewing me out the entire flight."Gavin! I swear you were put on this earth to drive me insane!"I thought you were going to stand me up for the third time. Let me tell you, I went to your place fully planning to strangle you!"At work you're as stubborn as a mule, and you let them lock you up at home?"I've told you a thousand times to dump her! Back in college I could already tell that girlfriend of yours was bad news!"Even as she ranted, her hands never stopped moving. She put a screen protector on a new phone, snapped a case on it, and tossed it to me with a huff."And just so you know, you're paying me back for the phone next month!"Nora had been a year ahead of me in college, and I'd joined her company right after graduation.Back then, there were only four of us, me included. I was the only one who was still a regular employee. She knew my situation. She

Third-person POVMeanwhile, Gavin's mother, Linda Pembroke, was still fuming by the time they got to the Bellamys'.She kept listing everything that was wrong with Gavin. From head to toe, there wasn't a single thing about him that measured up to Miles.Miles hooked his arm through hers and spoke sweetly."Mom, don't be mad at Gavin. He'll come around."Linda looked at him, touched."You're the one who really cares about me. If your brother were half as sensible as you, I'd be happy."Diane brought out a plate of fruit and laughed as she scolded her."You expect way too much. Gavin just doesn't talk much. Every time I come over, isn't he the one who cooks that whole big spread?"And that mink coat of yours, he bought it for you, didn't he?"Whenever you ask Gavin for anything, when has he ever said no?"He's just not as outgoing as Miles. Honestly, you've got two good sons. Be grateful!"Audrey nodded in agreement. It was true. Aside from work, Gavin spent almost all his t

The living room went silent.Dad frowned."Gavin, what did you just say?"Miles froze too. The considerate act he'd just been putting on disappeared, and he stared at me in surprise.Mom shot up from the couch."What kind of tantrum is this? Are you saying you're done with this family? I raised you all these years for nothing!""Then why doesn't Miles have to chip in?"I couldn't stop my voice from rising.Mom's face darkened."How is that the same? Miles has so many expenses. Why are you comparing yourself to him?""How is it not the same? You bought him a car, and I'm still supposed to keep paying for him?"Look at what he wears and what he has, and then look at me."I'm his brother, but I live like I'm his father!"Smack! The slap came out of nowhere. It was Mom.My face burned, and the tears I'd been holding back finally fell.Mom's hand was shaking. She sat back down on the couch, one hand pressed to her chest, looking more wronged than the person she'd just hit.
