Chapter 3

Author: Muddle Egg
That weekend was our monthly dinner with the Bellamys.

It also happened to be my birthday.

When I got home, Audrey's mother, Diane Bellamy, was chatting with Mom about Miles.

"Miles is such a lovable kid. So lively, and he always knows just what to say."

Mom laughed and waved her off.

"Audrey's wonderful too. So generous and sensible.

"Those three grew up together, so how did Audrey end up falling for Gavin?"

Diane sighed, sounding genuinely regretful.

Then she consoled herself. "Well, Gavin's not bad. At least he's careful with money."

Careful with money.

That was the only good thing anyone could say about me.

Before long, I heard voices at the door.

Miles came in with his arm around Audrey's shoulders.

The moment he walked in, he gave Diane a big hug.

"Diane, I missed you!"

Everyone laughed. The mood was almost too perfect.

I stood off to the side in a daze. They really did look like a family.

Only I looked like some unimportant, extra decoration.

Well, not quite. Every time I transferred money to Mom, I did get a smile out of her.

The doorbell rang suddenly, and I went to answer it.

"Hi, delivery for Ms. Bellamy."

It was a huge bouquet of balloon flowers. Even the wrapping looked exquisite.

I struggled to take it in my arms, and my heart couldn't help softening a little. It was the first time Audrey had ever sent me flowers.

But I'd barely turned around when my arms suddenly went light.

Audrey took the bouquet and walked over to Miles.

"Miles, happy housewarming."

Miles looked thrilled.

I slowly lowered my hands, which had frozen in midair, and called her name.

"Audrey."

When she turned around, her smile faded a little.

"What?"

"You bought him flowers?"

She looked confused, as if she didn't understand why I'd even ask.

"Don't you hate stuff like this?"

Then something seemed to occur to her, and she got impatient.

"Why do you keep comparing yourself to Miles lately? Isn't that embarrassing?"

With that, she ignored me and walked back over, smiling again.

I let out a bitter laugh. Gavin, what are you still hoping for?

After dinner, once Diane had left, Dad proudly pulled out a car key, grinning like a kid with a prize.

"Your mom and I have a present too!

"You've got a long commute. This car will make things easier."

The blood in my veins seemed to freeze.

So this was what Mom meant when she said the house was expensive to run and she needed my help.

To squeeze out that five thousand every month, I budgeted every single day. I only replaced my clothes after they'd pilled and torn and been mended over and over.

I'd even hesitate forever over a three-dollar coffee.

Every time my coworkers talked about a new movie or invited me out to eat, I pretended I was busy with work.

I'd thought my parents were really struggling.

But right now, Miles was beaming as he took the car key. Then he looked at Mom with concern.

"Mom, with you buying me a car, won't money be tight around here?"

Mom patted the back of his hand.

"It's fine. We still have your brother."

She said it so casually, but it made my ears ring.

As if every hole in this family was mine to fill.

Mom looked at me, as though it was only natural.

"Oh, right, Gavin. You still haven't given me this month's money. Remember to send it today."

The chatter and laughter went on. I looked at the designer clothes Miles was wearing, the fancy belt, the car key in his hand, and the sight of them stung more and more.

I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and said calmly, "From now on, I'm not sending any more money."

After that, Audrey came back a few more times.Sometimes she waited for me outside the office. Sometimes she brought me food from back home.I acted like she wasn't there, until one time she showed up just as Nora was video-calling me.When I spotted Audrey in the distance, I let out an irritated sigh.Nora was immediately annoyed."You're not even a partner yet, and you already have the nerve to be sick of me?"I burst out laughing. To everyone else, Nora was an ice queen. Only with me and the other two founding employees did she let her true chatterbox nature show.I didn't explain. I just said, "Let me borrow you for a second."I walked up to Audrey and showed her Nora's annoyed face on the screen."This is my new girlfriend. Could you stop coming around now?"Audrey stood frozen. Her mouth opened, then closed again.I left before she could say anything.I never saw her again after that.Nora, on the other hand, couldn't look at me, and her voice went small."I-I've go

Gavin's POVIt wasn't until my third month overseas that I finally got used to the pace of life there.Nora gave me a raise, too.It all started one day when I was giving her a work update over video. The moment the call connected, there I was, eating a sad microwave dinner. On the other end, her eyes went wide."You did that on purpose, didn't you, Gavin? Trying to remind me I'm overworking you?"One of the other founding employees from the early days laughed in the background."Being all alone in a foreign country isn't easy. Why don't you give our Gavin a raise? Don't worry, I won't mind!"I swallowed my bite and didn't say anything. The truth was, I just hadn't gotten used to the food there yet, but I didn't feel like explaining.I'd never had any savings, so I really did need the money.Besides, I still hadn't paid Nora back for the phone. In the end, I got a small raise. After that, every time I gave an update, I'd accidentally let my miserable situation show. But fr

Third-person POVBack home, after Gavin left, things only got worse. There was no one to remind Rick to take his blood pressure medication, and no one to help Linda with the housework.Linda kept sending Miles and Audrey out to find Gavin's address. They went to his company several times, but on Nora's orders, they never even made it through the front door. When they came home empty-handed yet again, Linda couldn't hold back anymore."Miles, why don't you move back home for a while? It's so empty around here."Or maybe you could hand over part of your paycheck too, and I'll hold on to it for you?"Miles, who had always been the obedient, sensible one in her eyes, refused on the spot."Mom, you can't be serious. I'm an adult. I don't need you holding on to my money."Besides, I'm old enough to have a life of my own. You can't expect me to keep revolving around you forever!"Linda was a little put out."Your brother did it, and he was doing just fine!"Miles couldn't help ro

Gavin's POVBy then, I was already on a plane headed overseas.Next to me sat Nora Winslow, my boss, who'd been chewing me out the entire flight."Gavin! I swear you were put on this earth to drive me insane!"I thought you were going to stand me up for the third time. Let me tell you, I went to your place fully planning to strangle you!"At work you're as stubborn as a mule, and you let them lock you up at home?"I've told you a thousand times to dump her! Back in college I could already tell that girlfriend of yours was bad news!"Even as she ranted, her hands never stopped moving. She put a screen protector on a new phone, snapped a case on it, and tossed it to me with a huff."And just so you know, you're paying me back for the phone next month!"Nora had been a year ahead of me in college, and I'd joined her company right after graduation.Back then, there were only four of us, me included. I was the only one who was still a regular employee. She knew my situation. She

Third-person POVMeanwhile, Gavin's mother, Linda Pembroke, was still fuming by the time they got to the Bellamys'.She kept listing everything that was wrong with Gavin. From head to toe, there wasn't a single thing about him that measured up to Miles.Miles hooked his arm through hers and spoke sweetly."Mom, don't be mad at Gavin. He'll come around."Linda looked at him, touched."You're the one who really cares about me. If your brother were half as sensible as you, I'd be happy."Diane brought out a plate of fruit and laughed as she scolded her."You expect way too much. Gavin just doesn't talk much. Every time I come over, isn't he the one who cooks that whole big spread?"And that mink coat of yours, he bought it for you, didn't he?"Whenever you ask Gavin for anything, when has he ever said no?"He's just not as outgoing as Miles. Honestly, you've got two good sons. Be grateful!"Audrey nodded in agreement. It was true. Aside from work, Gavin spent almost all his t

The living room went silent.Dad frowned."Gavin, what did you just say?"Miles froze too. The considerate act he'd just been putting on disappeared, and he stared at me in surprise.Mom shot up from the couch."What kind of tantrum is this? Are you saying you're done with this family? I raised you all these years for nothing!""Then why doesn't Miles have to chip in?"I couldn't stop my voice from rising.Mom's face darkened."How is that the same? Miles has so many expenses. Why are you comparing yourself to him?""How is it not the same? You bought him a car, and I'm still supposed to keep paying for him?"Look at what he wears and what he has, and then look at me."I'm his brother, but I live like I'm his father!"Smack! The slap came out of nowhere. It was Mom.My face burned, and the tears I'd been holding back finally fell.Mom's hand was shaking. She sat back down on the couch, one hand pressed to her chest, looking more wronged than the person she'd just hit.
