Daphne took a slow breath, trying to find an answer that wouldn’t trip a wire. Before she could find the words, Griffith lifted a hand.

“Give me a moment.”

He went still beside the mattress, his head tilting as he listened to a voice she couldn't hear. His eyes went a brighter green, the way a wolf’s did when a mindlink came through.

Daphne waited, watching the subtle tightening of his jaw. Whoever was on the other end wasn't delivering good news. A sharp frown creased his forehead.

Griffith caught Storm’s wrist and twisted until his fingers opened. Before Storm could grab him again, he shoved him back. Orion moved with him. Two guards came forward, one already reaching, until Griffith barked, “Stay back.” Storm knocked Orion’s arm aside and stepped in again. Griffith was already coming to meet him, his coat hanging crooked where a seam had split near the collar. “Put your hands on me again,” Griffith warned, “and you won’t be standing here asking questions.” “Then answer me. When did you see her?” “You still haven’t told me who she is.” “Her scent is all over your clothes. You know exactly who I’m talking about.” Griffith’s eyes moved over his face, provoking enough that Storm wanted to hit him. “What do you want with her?” “To see her. To hear her tell me she’s all right, instead of standing here trying to squeeze it out of you.” “You think putting your hands on me gets you closer to that?” “Was she hurt?” The question came out louder than St

Daphne took a slow breath, trying to find an answer that wouldn’t trip a wire. Before she could find the words, Griffith lifted a hand.“Give me a moment.”He went still beside the mattress, his head tilting as he listened to a voice she couldn't hear. His eyes went a brighter green, the way a wolf’s did when a mindlink came through. Daphne waited, watching the subtle tightening of his jaw. Whoever was on the other end wasn't delivering good news. A sharp frown creased his forehead.“What’s wrong?” she asked when he looked back at her. “Storm Larsen is at the north checkpoint. He’s asking about a woman but won’t give my guards her name.”Whatever she had been about to say left her. Her heart kicked harder.“He says she was kidnapped, and he thinks my wolves found her.” Griffith let out a short breath. The van. Storm had actually found the site. She had assumed Griffith would have scrubbed the road clean by now, but she underestimated Storm. “Are you... are you letting him in?”Griff

Storm zoomed in on the photo. The bastard had his hand on her cheek. “If his wolves found her, he’ll know where she is.”“Maybe,” Orion mused. “Let me get in touch with their delta first.” Storm was already walking to the car.“Storm!”He yanked the driver’s door open. Orion slammed his palm against it before Storm could climb inside. “You can’t turn up there ready to fight him. What if she’s staying with his pack? You start a war on their turf, she’s the one caught in the crossfire.”“Then get in and make sure I behave.” Storm growled, his eyes going almost black.“This is serious,” Orion’s voice dropped low, trying to pull his Alpha back from the ledge.“So am I.” Storm forced the door open, shoving past his beta's arm. “It’s been hell. Every single day I’ve been sick to my stomach wondering if she’s breathing, and I was right—she wasn't safe. I’m done sitting in that study thinking. Griffith can fit me into his fucking afternoon.” Orion held his gaze, then stepped off the door.T

“This has to be the van.”Orion didn't answer, but Storm already knew before he even reached the door. Daphne’s scent was inside, faint under the smell of old sweat and petrol, but he would have recognized it in a crowd. For a split second he looked into the trees, as if she might still be standing out there waiting for someone to come get her.“Are you sure this isn’t a prank?” Orion asked, tracking the surrounding brush. He had a right to be skeptical. The moment one of the warriors reported that a local had spotted a suspicious resistance vehicle near their search perimeter, Storm hadn't thought twice. He’d thrown his keys straight to Orion because his hands were shaking too badly to handle the wheel. But the local hadn't been describing the human resistance van they'd been tracking. This was completely different. It didn’t take Storm long to put the pieces together—they had swapped vehicles at some point.“How did we miss this road during the first sweep?” Storm demanded.“We sh

“How many did you lose?”Daphne pulled her hand out of Griffith’s grip before he could feel how badly her fingers had started shaking. “I don’t want to talk about that.”She didn’t care if the blunt answer offended him. Those babies belonged to a part of her life she could barely touch herself without coming apart. She certainly wasn’t opening that door for a man she had known for only a few weeks all because he happened to ask.Griffith watched her face for so long she wondered if he was going to push anyway. Finally, he let out a short breath. “All right.”The answer surprised her. She looked away before he could see how grateful she was for those two words,Then he had to go and ruin it. “But you still need to see a doctor.”“I’ll do that, Alpha,” she muttered.“Today,” he said.Daphne swallowed the protest rising in her throat. The clinic in the outer ring wouldn’t even be open today, and the hospitals in the main pack territory were bound to be expensive. She was running dangerou

“Yeah, the lab results just came back.” Rosalind sighed on the other end, and Daphne could already picture the worried look on her face. She sounded worn out, like she had been sitting with the news for a while before she called.“What did they find?” Daphne moved away from the hall, but she knew it was pointless. There was nowhere inside the house far enough to escape a werewolf's hearing unless she went out to the porch.“It's a crazy story. The vitamins themselves are real. Everything listed on the label is actually in the tablet.”Daphne scowled, keeping her eyes on the floor to avoid tripping over the tools scattered all over. “So there was nothing wrong with them to begin with?”“The coating’s wrong. I knew the color looked off, and I was right to question it. It’s got cacao in it.”Daphne stopped where she was, her legs suddenly feeling too heavy to move.Every human who got into the breeder program learned the restrictions on day one. Alcohol, specific medications, even common

“Daphne,” Katerina called in that soft, sweet voice she used when people were watching. “Can we talk?”Daphne paused at the landing, feeling goosebumps rise on her skin. What could Katerina possibly want to say after making it so clear in the past and present that she hated her existence?Katerina

The next morning, Daphne woke up with her eyes feeling raw and sour from all the crying she’d done the night before. She buried her face deeper into the pillow, trying to block out the memories that kept rushing in. Those early mornings in her first year here, Storm would quietly slip into her room

Morwen’s hand twitched like she wanted to slap her, but she caught herself, smoothing her expression into a chilling smile. “The pack doesn’t want you here, Daphne. Why don’t you just leave quietly and be happy somewhere else?”“Thank you for your sudden concern, Morwen. But I’m staying.”Daphne br

Gasps and excited murmurs swam among the gathered crowd.“A female wolf is pregnant? Does that mean things are finally getting better?”“An heir, finally…”“The breeder couldn't do it.”“Of course not. She’s only human.”The whispers cut deep, each one feeling like her chest was being clawed out by
