Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Mommy was so angry that she kicked the washing machine. "Are you really going to defy me now?"

That wasn't my intention, Mommy. The water was going to fill the entire washing machine soon. By then, I wouldn't be able to hold on.

I began wishing the water would rise faster. Just a little faster, and Mommy would realize something was wrong and let me out.

After hearing a beep, I forced myself to brace my arms and legs against the inside of the washing machine. I just had to hold on a little longer. Once Mommy opened the door, I would be safe.

As the washing machine started spinning again, Daddy walked over, holding Jason in his arms.

"Darling, we can deal with Caleb later. We need to get to the hospital now."

I didn't want them to leave…

I watched Mommy turn and walk away with my own eyes. The front door slammed shut behind her.

The next moment, the washing machine started spinning violently again. My world started spinning, and I was tossed around inside, like a discarded rag.

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating in midair. I thought I had been rescued and immediately left the house to look for my parents.

But I didn't want to upset Mommy and Daddy again, so I stayed at home like a good kid and fell asleep next to my Transformers.

I didn't know how much time had passed when the door opened again. Mommy and Daddy came home with Jason, and he was holding a huge electric toy car.

"Good thing Jason's fine. Otherwise, Caleb would've been in serious trouble."

"Jason went through so much today. We'll give him this toy car to make it up to him!"

Mommy deliberately called out toward the washing machine. "From now on, whoever gets hurt will get a present. The bully will be grounded!"

Mommy and Daddy exchanged a glance and strained to listen for any sounds coming from the washing machine. After a long time, there was still no response.

They furrowed their brows and sneered. "Ha! Do you see that? He's still sulking. If he wants to stay there, let him.

"The washing machine isn't even running. It's not like he'll die there."

I floated back and forth in front of Mommy and Daddy. I was already out of the washing machine. Couldn't they see me?

I wasn't sulking at all. Could they stop talking about me like that?

I kept trying to talk to Mommy and Daddy, but they acted as if they couldn't see me. They didn't even make eye contact with me.

I wanted to touch them, but my hand passed right through their bodies. It was only then that I realized I had died in the washing machine.

I ran over there to take a look. Inside the washing machine was a small body curled up in an unnatural position.

Was that me?

I turned around and saw Mommy and Daddy playing with Jason.

Forget it. That was Mommy and Daddy's punishment for me.

Maybe this was for the best. I wouldn't have to change Jason's diapers anymore.

Ever since he was born, Mommy and Daddy hadn't given me their full attention in a long time.

If I were dead, did that mean I could stay with my parents forever? I suppressed the ache in my chest and forced a smile.

Later, Daddy made my favorite pork ribs for dinner. After feeding Jason, they sat at the dining table, their faces grim as they looked toward the washing machine.

Daddy spoke first. "Caleb, come out and eat."

The only response they got was Jason's babbling.

Mommy impatiently slammed her bowl on the table. "If you don't want to eat, fine! How did you become this way?

"You messed up, and now you're throwing a tantrum? Fine. Don't eat then!

"I'll just pretend I never had a son like you. Everyone says parents can't help but favor one over the other once they have two kids.

"I thought if we treated you well enough, you'd be good to Jason too. I never thought we'd end up spoiling you, and you'd become so arrogant and domineering. You're such an ungrateful brat!"

"Forget about him. It must be really uncomfortable in the washing machine. He's too spoiled for that. He wouldn't have stayed in there for so long. I bet he's already gone back to his room."

I sat next to Mommy and Daddy, listening to their conversation. My eyes began to sting.

Mommy, I never wanted to hurt Jason. I just wanted to help give him a bath.

"I didn't break my promise this time," Mommy said.I pursed my lips and tried to put on the watch. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't do it. Daddy gently touched my photo. "I'm sorry, Caleb."Mommy and Daddy looked like they still had more to say, but the police officers were already urging them to leave. "Come on. We need to get going now."Mommy and Daddy rose to their feet. The police officers turned around, ready to leave too.Just as everyone was about to leave, Mommy suddenly slammed her head against my gravestone."Darling!" Daddy cried out. The police officers immediately ran back when they heard him cry out. "Quick! Take her to the hospital!" I could feel Mommy's life slipping away, little by little. It was as if she could already see me and was smiling at me. It was as if Mommy had already made up her mind to die. She had slammed her forehead against the corner of my gravestone. Blood began flowing from her wound, and it wouldn't stop no matter how ha

One day, a few police officers suddenly knocked on our door. "Are you Caleb Tucker's parents? We received a report that you intentionally abused and killed a little boy. You're coming with us."Mommy and Daddy were about to be taken to the police station, and they were even being put in handcuffs! Handcuffs were only for bad people, but Mommy and Daddy weren't bad people! No matter how much I didn't want it to happen, I still heard the handcuffs snap shut with a click.Mommy and Daddy were far calmer than I had imagined. The neighbors couldn't help but criticize them, and one of them was Mrs. Jebb from the unit upstairs. "Caleb was such a sensible child, and he was adorable too. Everyone in the neighborhood adored him. How did he end up with parents like them?""That's right. They deliberately murdered their child. They deserve to die for this!""They deserve serious punishment for what they did! If they weren't going to take good care of their children, they shouldn't have

"Caleb would probably be really happy to see us like this. We don't deserve to be his parents. All we can do now is live with our guilt."That wasn't true. What Grandma Elena said was exactly what I wanted to say all along. Grandma Elena was so angry that she didn't know what else to say. She could only keep pointing at Mommy. Mommy was about to say something when her phone rang. Ms. Cahill's impatient voice came through the phone. "Didn't you say you were going to bring your son over to play with mine? Kingsley can hardly wait! Do you still want that doctor to take a look at Jason?"Grandpa Justin, Grandma Elena, and Daddy looked at Mommy in astonishment. Finally, Grandpa Justin snatched the phone from her and smashed it to the floor."You know what Kingsley is like. Last time, he scared Caleb so badly that he had nightmares for a whole month. Have you already forgotten about that?"And you were willing to send your eldest son over just to be a clown for someone else's amuse

Grandma Natasha grabbed Daddy by the collar. She was crying so hard that she was hunched over. I really wanted to tell them not to cry. It had been really suffocating inside the washing machine. I had been tossed around, slammed against the inner walls, over and over again. It hurt so much. At least, I didn't have to suffer anymore. Daddy stared blankly at my body, as if his soul had been ripped away from him. He crouched down and lifted me in his arms, carefully smoothing every strand of my hair into place. "Caleb, I messed up. I made you suffer so much. I'll find you a place where you can rest in peace.Grandpa Justin and Grandma Natasha wanted to stop Daddy from carrying me out like that, but no one could stop him at all. He carried me into the elevator. As soon as the doors opened, the children inside were so frightened that they burst into tears. Very quickly, word spread throughout the neighborhood that I had died in the washing machine after Mommy and Daddy trapped

Grandma Natasha wrinkled her nose, and her frown deepened. "What's that smell in your house? Did something go bad?"You must have your hands full with two children. Why don't I come over and help out at your house starting tomorrow?" Grandma Natasha asked. But Mommy suddenly went weak in the knees and nearly collapsed to the floor.Grandma Elena was the first to realize something was wrong and walked over to demand answers from Mommy. "Where's Caleb? I haven't seen him since I came in. Where on earth did he go?"Mommy's eyes suddenly welled up with tears, and she shakily pointed toward the washing machine. "Caleb… Two days ago, he made Jason choke on water. I was so upset that I put him in the washing machine."Mom… Caleb went over to your house, didn't he? He's still throwing a tantrum and refusing to come home. He asked you to say all that, right? He just wants us to worry about him, right?"Mommy grabbed Grandma Elena's hand, but Grandma Elena immediately shook her off."Y

  • No More Baths for Me   Chapter 4

"Oh, it's nothing. I need to check on Jason."Over the next few days, Mommy and Daddy made no effort to look for me again. Daddy went back to his normal work routine. Suddenly, Jason started spitting up his milk and refusing to eat. Grown terribly worried, Mommy rushed him to several hospitals, but nothing seemed to help. It wasn't until she heard that Ms. Cahill knew a remarkably skilled doctor that she finally caught a glimmer of hope. She quickly gave Ms. Cahill a call, her tone dripping with obvious flattery. "Hey, Taylor. Your son hasn't played with Caleb in a while. I'll bring Caleb over in a few days so they can play together."Those words sent a chill down my spine. I used to play with Kingsley, Ms. Cahill's son, and he always bullied me. Kingsley used to hit me on the head with a chair and make me throw stones at kittens. I was so scared that I had nightmares for an entire month.Mommy and Daddy had always forbidden Kingsley from seeing me. She said Kingsley was a v
