Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Graham laughed as he held me in his arms, then told the butler to order a pure gold necklace for me.

"We can't mistreat our little lucky star. All these things are for Mindy from now on!"

My brothers and Jade stared at us in shock.

John glared at Graham and yelled, "Dad, how can you show so much favoritism toward Mindy? Jade is our real sister!"

Jade's eyes turned red at just the right moment, and she stubbornly lowered her head.

Graham quickly put me down and cleared his throat. "I've treated Jade as my own daughter all these years. Why would I play favorites? Didn't Jade say she liked that two-million-dollar necklace the other day? It will arrive at our home today."

Jade immediately broke into a cute smile and ran over to him. "Dad, you're the best! I thought you guys wouldn't care about me anymore after Mindy was born..."

Graham patted her head in a caring manner. "My sweet girl, you'll always be mommy and daddy's little princess."

Jade turned and shot me with a provocative smile. I couldn't understand why Jade was so hostile to me when I was just a year old, but it was obvious that she was determined to get rid of me right from the start.

Graham often asked me what to do for good luck, but I didn't always grant his wishes.

Every time they wanted me to share my luck with Jade, I would start crying. After that, the whole family would be hit with bad luck for a month.

My parents' business would go downhill, James would be set up by a competitor, Jimmy ran into poltergeists in the morgue, and John was swindled out of all his money after he thought he met a talent scout.

The more it happened, the more they noticed the pattern, but they still couldn't figure out why.

But I was still less than two years old and barely able to speak, so I just pretended not to understand a word they said.

Jade's face grew darker. At this point, everyone started connecting the family's bad luck to her.

Then Graham made another bad decision and nearly bankrupted the company, and the whole family started to panic.

Jade covered her face and cried. "I'm the only one who keeps having bad luck! It must be because Mindy doesn't like me. If I leave, I won't drag everyone else down with me."

They all rushed over, anxious.

"Jade, it's not your fault. You're our daughter too. This will always be your home!" Amanda said.

"Yeah! If anyone's to blame, it's Mindy. She stole our luck, and that's why we keep having bad luck!" Jimmy said.

With just one sentence from him, Amanda then glared at me with resentment. "If only Jade were my real daughter. She's so sweet... Not like this one, who's already causing trouble when she's barely two years old."

Graham made up his mind on the spot and called the shaman to perform a ritual. "The shaman said Mindy can bring us good luck. I want to know why she's been making us unlucky instead!"

The shaman arrived and stared at me for a long time.

I pointed right at Jade and babbled, "Black...black..."

James's face turned sour. "Jade's clearly fair and pretty. She's just talking nonsense. No wonder we're unlucky."

The others didn't look happy either, and Jade's pitiful expression only made them feel worse.

To everyone's surprise, the shaman stroked his beard and said, "This has nothing to do with Miss Mindy. The real source of all this bad luck...is Miss Jade."

This time, the transfer went unusually smoothly. Not a single Baker stood in our way—they quietly cooperated and handed me to the Shaw family.I finally felt at peace when I saw the newly minted paperwork with my new name, Mindy Shaw.Deep down, I knew this was what it meant to truly change my fate. As part of the deal, I really did give the Bakers a stroke of good luck. But things never go as planned. The moment they received some leftover payment from a project to tide them over, their account was empty again the next day.Hundreds of thousands were gone in a flash, and after a chaotic investigation, they discovered that Jade had taken it.It turned out Jade had seen the writing on the wall and wanted to leave for a long time, but she didn't have any money. As soon as the family got a windfall, she took the chance to steal it all and tried to run away.Unfortunately, she was caught before leaving the country, but most of the money was still lost.My parents and brothers came t

The security camera footage from the Bakers' living room was played, exposing all their schemes in front of dozens of cameras.Everyone in the room gasped as Leon lifted the wine glasses again. "If you don't believe it, we can have both glasses tested and make the results public."Graham's face twisted in fury as he yelled at me, "It was you, you little traitor! You sided with outsiders to hurt your own family! You're so young, but you're already so brutal!"Sandy stepped in front of me, frowning with disapproval. "Watch your words, Mr. Graham. You tried to hurt us first. Are we not allowed to retaliate?"Amanda complained bitterly, "I gave birth to her and raised her! She's supposed to be on our side!"But before she finished, the projection on the wall changed again. This time, my three brothers were shown ganging up on me, with Jade looking down coldly as she crushed my fingers underfoot. "It's so unlucky for you to end up with the Bakers, Mindy. There can only be one daughte

The Bakers set up a dinner three days later, saying both families should sit down and clear things up. On the surface, the dinner looked like a peaceful meeting. In truth, everyone had their own hidden agenda where conflict would surely arise. On the day of the dinner, Sandy dressed me in a beautiful, well-fitting dress. As soon as Amanda saw me, her eyes turned red. She walked over and said softly, "Mindy, Mommy finally gets to see you. Have you been bullied while you were away?"I hid behind Sandy and told the truth, "No."Graham pointed at me angrily, "You ungrateful brat! We raised you, and now you run off just because someone else feeds you?"I looked up and retorted, "Sandy makes good food and gives me pretty clothes. The nanny at home only makes food Jade likes. All my clothes are Jade's hand-me-downs."The room went silent. No one could say a word.A flicker of regret flashed in Amanda's eyes. Meanwhile, Graham's face darkened, and he said, "If you want her for her luc

I was rushed to the hospital. After checking me, the doctor said I was lucky to be alive. "This girl is seriously allergic to the gelatin in cotton candy. If she hadn't been treated in time, things could have turned out much worse."Sandy held me in her arms and sighed. "Poor thing... So young and already suffering from such abuses. Most families treasure their daughters, but the Bakers must be blind and deaf to treat the adopted one like a princess instead. Luckily, I found her. If she had been left outside any longer, she could've been kidnapped."But this wasn't just an accident. When my brothers abandoned me, I had made up my mind to use up all my luck for a real escape. That was how Sandy saved me. For the first time, I had the chance to get away from that nightmare. While I was still getting an IV drip at the hospital, Sandy's husband, Leon Shaw, arrived. After hearing what happened, Leon's face darkened in outrage. "What kind of monsters would hurt a five-year-old child?

Sandy came in and scooped me up into her arms, her sharp gaze sweeping over the Bakers. "I happened to run into this girl and only now realize how miserable her life is. Even her parents don't care about her and left her alone in an alley. If you don't want her, then I'll raise her."Amanda's expression changed. "What's that supposed to mean, Mrs. Sandy?! No matter what happened, Mindy is still my daughter! It's not your place to interfere, especially when she's the reason Jade got kidnapped."At that, everyone turned their hateful eyes on me, as if they couldn't wait to tear me apart.Only Sandy touched my face gently and said, "She's just a child. As for the kidnapping... Maybe you should ask your beloved daughter."With a wave of her hand, Sandy played a video. On the screen, Jade was bossing around two middle-aged men. "Do what I told you, but don't hurt me, understand? Just find a way to swap me for Mindy. You can beat her as much as you want. I want her face ruined, her

Sandy really did have a heart of gold. Not only did she save me, but she also had her personal assistant take me back to the Bakers. When we arrived, I could hear laughter and joy from outside the house. My parents and all three brothers had decorated the whole place, happily celebrating Jade's eighteenth birthday."Don't worry, Jade. We've already arranged for you to go to school overseas. It'll be tough to study abroad, but when you come back, your three brothers will still take care of you. These shares are your birthday present. We'll always have your back," Graham said.Everyone was gathered around Jade with so much love, completely forgetting that I had been thrown out of the house just a day ago. When I walked in, all their smiles froze. The personal assistant holding me simply announced, "My lady, Mrs. Sandy Shaw, would like to know how the Baker family raises their children. What kind of family dumps a five-year-old out in an alley in the middle of the night?"Graham's s
