Chapter 4

Autor: Spectate With Grace
The office was quite lively over the next few days.

Enzo and Megan's official transfer was approaching, and everyone was wishing them well. People gathered around them, asking them not to forget their old coworkers and to put in a good word for them once they got there.

I seemed to be the only person everyone had forgotten.

Yet more and more of the work was passed on to me. I barely had time to breathe during the day, and I had to work overtime at night on my own.

Laughter often drifted in from outside.

They got to have fun, but I had to handle the mess they left behind.

I arrived home very late on my dad's birthday, but both my parents were still awake.

My mother frowned when she saw me. "You're late again. Is your work that busy?"

My father asked me what I had been busy with. I was quiet for a moment before telling them. "Enzo and Megan are getting transferred to headquarters. A lot of their workload has been dumped on me."

My mother frowned at that. "Why do they get promoted and leave while you're stuck cleaning up their mess?"

My father's expression turned dark. "That's not fair."

For a moment, I felt dazed. It had been so long since someone listened to me and said I had been treated unfairly. Even hearing "That's not fair" made me sniff.

I held my cup and asked quietly, "Would you be upset if I left too?"

The living room went quiet for a few seconds, and my mother spoke first. "There's nothing wrong with wanting something better. Why would we be upset? Think it through. Your dad and I will always support you."

Their support was not loud, but it was enough for me. Enough to put my previous doubts to rest.

Back home that night, I turned on my computer and reorganized all the files I would be handing over. When I finished, I created two new documents. One was my resignation email. The other was a breakup message for Enzo.

I kept the breakup message short. There was no argument and no demand for answers in the text, just me calmly telling him that our relationship was over.

After writing it, I stared at those few lines for a long time. In the end, just one single sentence was enough to end three years' worth of relationship.

After sending it, I shut down my computer.

I slept well that night. It felt as if I had finally thrown away the weight that had pressed on me for so long.

I learned later that Enzo had not panicked right away when he saw the message. He had only frowned, assuming I was just throwing another tantrum again.

No matter how hurt I had been in the past, I had always been the first to give in. He had probably gotten used to it and expected me to come back to him after a few days.

This time, I did not.

I did not go back to the company the next day. Or the third day. Or the fourth.

He could not reach me by phone. I did not answer his messages or emails.

Enzo finally began to lose his patience and even panicked a little. Even then, his first move was to post in the company group chat: [If Jessie Lynch keeps missing work without a valid reason, the company will treat this as voluntary resignation.]

I finally responded after he posted that message. I did not explain or plead. Instead, I simply left the group chat.

That explained everything I needed to say.

Later, he went ahead with my termination. The reasons he listed were cold and impersonal: unexcused absences and insubordination.

Then, it was time for them to start their new jobs at headquarters. Enzo and Megan went as planned.

An important project meeting was scheduled for their first day. On the way there, their director kept reminding them that the client's new project lead had high standards and warned them not to make any mistakes.

The conference room door opened, and everyone walked in. Enzo looked up at the head of the table and stopped in his tracks.

I was sitting there in a white suit, my hair pinned up, with an ID badge hanging against my chest. Documents and a tablet were close to my hands. Natalie sat beside me with my new team nearby.

I saw them too. By then, the sight of them barely stirred anything in me.

Their director introduced me with a smile. "This is Ms. Jessie Lynch, the person in charge of the project from our client's side."

I looked up at Enzo calmly. "Hello, Mr. Lane. I've heard a lot about you."

The conference room fell silent.

  • No More Nights Spent in Tears   Chapter 9

A year later, I got engaged. After that, I got married. The wedding was small, and we only invited the people closest to us, but the celebration was very lively. Everyone gathered around Zachary and me, laughing and chatting. No one had to worry about appearances, and no one made me stand at the edge of any photo. Standing on the stage in my wedding dress, I suddenly felt a little distracted. Such a day had truly come. I did not have to edge toward anyone or worry about standing in the wrong place. All eyes were on me. The man beside me held my hand openly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As we exchanged rings, I caught a glimpse of the last row out of the corner of my eye and briefly paused. Enzo had come too. He wore a suit and sat quietly in the farthest corner. He never did anything out of place. He just sat there and watched the entire ceremony. I glanced at him once and felt nothing. It was not that I was being gracious. By then, I just did not

Our team finished the project with excellent results. I was promoted and put in charge of more important projects with a small new team to lead. When the promotion email was sent out, congratulations filled the group chat. Even my boss, despite how stern he was, sent me a private message saying I had done well. I looked at the screen, feeling calm. It wasn't that I was unhappy. It just felt different from before. In the past, I had wanted to be noticed. To be recognized and to prove I was as good as anyone else. But back then, I had always had to put up with so much unfair treatment just to get a little recognition. Now, I did good work and was then justly rewarded. It was that simple. During that time, a certain Zachary Weiss gradually grew closer to me. He was very different from Enzo. He never left me guessing. If he liked me, he showed it. If he cared, he made it known. If he wanted to stand beside me, he did it openly. When I had an upset stomach, he would have a lig

Enzo eventually got a chance to speak to me alone. The site inspection ended late that day. Everyone else had already left, and I was alone inside the basement parking garage, sorting through some documents. When I heard footsteps behind me, I hardly needed to turn around to know who it was. I put the last page in place before looking up. It was Enzo, just as I had expected. He stood a short distance away and watched me for a long time before asking me one question. "You really don't need me anymore, do you?" The question sounded so bizarre the moment I heard it. He had told me repeatedly not to get too close, not to let anyone find out, and not to cause him trouble. Yet now, he was the one who deliberately came over to ask if I still needed him? I looked at him and answered nonchalantly. "I never needed you in the past. I just wanted to build a future with you." The look in his eyes changed at once. Perhaps he finally understood the most foolish thing he had done over th

Once our companies began working together, Enzo started sending me texts constantly. [Do you have time to talk?] [I want to talk to you alone, just once.] [Jessie, we can't just end things like this.] I saw every message but never replied. I was way too busy now. Even when we occasionally ran into each other by the elevators at his company's headquarters, I only gave Enzo a brief nod and polite greeting before going back to discussing work with whoever was beside me. That politeness hurt him more than outright frostiness. That was because it meant he was a stranger to me again. There was no hate, and I was not waiting for him. I simply did not care anymore. Megan noticed too. At first, she could pretend nothing was wrong and tell herself it was only a partnership, with nothing to worry about. But she soon learned that pretending not to care did not make things go away. People at her company's headquarters started comparing her to me without even thinking about it. Cli

Enzo was clearly distracted once the meeting began. However, I did not make things difficult for him. While he was presenting, I looked down and went through the documents. When he stumbled with his presentation, I did not even look up. Business was business. As the client's representative, I gave him every professional courtesy. That was exactly why it made it harder for him. If I had been cold or attacked his work deliberately, it would at least have shown that I still held some grudge. But I did nothing at all. Instead, I looked at him like any other business partner, as if I had put those three years behind me. Halfway through the meeting, the team from headquarters brought out a document outlining their expertise to back up their presentation. A few pages in, I recognized it. Much of the framework came from the approach I had laid out before leaving. Even the risk breakdown and order of implementation were almost unchanged. They had simply put it into a new template
