Chapter 3

Author: Spectate With Grace
I woke up in the company's infirmary.

The doctor took my temperature and said it was nothing serious. I had a fever after getting caught in the rain yesterday and then taking the wrong medicine. I had fainted because my body had given out.

"The wrong medicine?" I asked hoarsely.

Then the coworker beside me explained that Megan had given me melatonin instead of medicine to bring down my fever. The packages looked alike, and she had grabbed the wrong one.

I was too exhausted to say anything. All I could think about was that last moment, when Enzo stepped away as I fell.

Megan came by that evening with fried chicken and iced tea, her eyes red. She apologized as soon as she walked in, saying she really had not meant for anything like this to happen. She had been terrified when she realized she had given me the wrong medicine.

She set the food on the table and held out the tea. "It's from your favorite place. I waited in line forever."

The infirmary was already stuffy. As the smell of fried chicken filled the room, my stomach churned. I had just thrown up at noon, and right now, just smelling food made me feel sick.

I turned my head away and spoke quietly. "I can't eat right now."

I had only spoken the truth, but her eyes became redder, and her voice began to shake. "Are you still mad at me?"

I looked at her, suddenly too tired to even explain.

She stood crying beside my bed. Someone happened to pass by the doorway, and soon, people came in to tell me to be gentle with her.

"It was an accident. She's already apologized."

"That's right. She went out of her way to buy you something."

"Have you been under a lot of stress lately? You seem to lose your temper so easily."

I listened to one comment after another, and my chest felt tight. I was the one who had fallen, the one with the fever, and the one who had taken the wrong medicine. But for some reason, she had become the victim.

I closed my eyes for a moment and simply said, "I just want to rest."

Once they left, the infirmary was finally quiet. I lay staring at the white light above me, suddenly feeling very exhausted.

It was not physical exhaustion. I was tired of being hurt and still having to worry about whether someone else was upset first, tired of being in pain and having to act like the understanding one, and tired of having to be the one to always give in until even telling the truth became the wrong thing to do.

After that, people at the office shut me out more and more.

Whenever I asked for project files, they said they would send them later. When I asked for information, I would discover it had gone to Megan first. Even the routine meeting minutes I got were missing pages and details.

At first, I thought it was a coincidence. After it happened enough times, I knew it was not.

They were not deliberately targeting me. They just knew whose lead to follow.

The worst incident involved a crucial contract attachment. I was supposed to receive it in advance, review it, and submit it with the other documents. I asked for it several times, but no one sent it. By the time I realized what had happened, I had only twenty minutes left.

I had to sort it out myself, going to the legal department and tracking down the person responsible for signing it. I ran around until I was breathless, but I still missed the deadline.

Before the meeting ended, Enzo set the document on the table and called my name. "Jessie Lynch, what's going on with you lately?"

I stood to explain, but he cut me off. "I don't want excuses. You're becoming less reliable by the day. If you're going to let your personal feelings affect your work, then you can consider stepping aside."

The room was silent.

Everyone kept their heads down. No one spoke up for me. No one said I had not deliberately held up the attachment, and that it had been withheld from me the whole time.

I stood there, chills running down my spine.

It was at that moment that I understood. It was not that I could not put up with it anymore. I just did not want to keep making excuses for him.

After the meeting, I stood alone by the printers for a long time without moving.

Someone called to me from behind. I turned and saw a familiar face. It was Natalie Chapman, a recruiter for one of our competitors.

We talked for a while. When she noticed how unwell I looked, she asked cautiously, "With your skills, you're wasted here. Would you consider a move?"

I said nothing.

"We need someone like you who can run a project on their own," she continued quietly. "This is your only chance."

Something stirred in my chest.

Every time I had considered leaving in the past, I had hesitated. I could not bear to leave my projects or the company.

Or… Enzo.

But now, I stood there after he had just scolded me in front of everyone. I looked at Natalie and did not turn her down this time.

"Okay. If you're still hiring, I'm willing to make the jump." Saying it brought a surprising sense of relief.

Perhaps I should have left a long time ago.

  • No More Nights Spent in Tears   Chapter 9

A year later, I got engaged. After that, I got married. The wedding was small, and we only invited the people closest to us, but the celebration was very lively. Everyone gathered around Zachary and me, laughing and chatting. No one had to worry about appearances, and no one made me stand at the edge of any photo. Standing on the stage in my wedding dress, I suddenly felt a little distracted. Such a day had truly come. I did not have to edge toward anyone or worry about standing in the wrong place. All eyes were on me. The man beside me held my hand openly, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As we exchanged rings, I caught a glimpse of the last row out of the corner of my eye and briefly paused. Enzo had come too. He wore a suit and sat quietly in the farthest corner. He never did anything out of place. He just sat there and watched the entire ceremony. I glanced at him once and felt nothing. It was not that I was being gracious. By then, I just did not

Our team finished the project with excellent results. I was promoted and put in charge of more important projects with a small new team to lead. When the promotion email was sent out, congratulations filled the group chat. Even my boss, despite how stern he was, sent me a private message saying I had done well. I looked at the screen, feeling calm. It wasn't that I was unhappy. It just felt different from before. In the past, I had wanted to be noticed. To be recognized and to prove I was as good as anyone else. But back then, I had always had to put up with so much unfair treatment just to get a little recognition. Now, I did good work and was then justly rewarded. It was that simple. During that time, a certain Zachary Weiss gradually grew closer to me. He was very different from Enzo. He never left me guessing. If he liked me, he showed it. If he cared, he made it known. If he wanted to stand beside me, he did it openly. When I had an upset stomach, he would have a lig

Enzo eventually got a chance to speak to me alone. The site inspection ended late that day. Everyone else had already left, and I was alone inside the basement parking garage, sorting through some documents. When I heard footsteps behind me, I hardly needed to turn around to know who it was. I put the last page in place before looking up. It was Enzo, just as I had expected. He stood a short distance away and watched me for a long time before asking me one question. "You really don't need me anymore, do you?" The question sounded so bizarre the moment I heard it. He had told me repeatedly not to get too close, not to let anyone find out, and not to cause him trouble. Yet now, he was the one who deliberately came over to ask if I still needed him? I looked at him and answered nonchalantly. "I never needed you in the past. I just wanted to build a future with you." The look in his eyes changed at once. Perhaps he finally understood the most foolish thing he had done over th

Once our companies began working together, Enzo started sending me texts constantly. [Do you have time to talk?] [I want to talk to you alone, just once.] [Jessie, we can't just end things like this.] I saw every message but never replied. I was way too busy now. Even when we occasionally ran into each other by the elevators at his company's headquarters, I only gave Enzo a brief nod and polite greeting before going back to discussing work with whoever was beside me. That politeness hurt him more than outright frostiness. That was because it meant he was a stranger to me again. There was no hate, and I was not waiting for him. I simply did not care anymore. Megan noticed too. At first, she could pretend nothing was wrong and tell herself it was only a partnership, with nothing to worry about. But she soon learned that pretending not to care did not make things go away. People at her company's headquarters started comparing her to me without even thinking about it. Cli

Enzo was clearly distracted once the meeting began. However, I did not make things difficult for him. While he was presenting, I looked down and went through the documents. When he stumbled with his presentation, I did not even look up. Business was business. As the client's representative, I gave him every professional courtesy. That was exactly why it made it harder for him. If I had been cold or attacked his work deliberately, it would at least have shown that I still held some grudge. But I did nothing at all. Instead, I looked at him like any other business partner, as if I had put those three years behind me. Halfway through the meeting, the team from headquarters brought out a document outlining their expertise to back up their presentation. A few pages in, I recognized it. Much of the framework came from the approach I had laid out before leaving. Even the risk breakdown and order of implementation were almost unchanged. They had simply put it into a new template

The office was quite lively over the next few days. Enzo and Megan's official transfer was approaching, and everyone was wishing them well. People gathered around them, asking them not to forget their old coworkers and to put in a good word for them once they got there. I seemed to be the only person everyone had forgotten. Yet more and more of the work was passed on to me. I barely had time to breathe during the day, and I had to work overtime at night on my own. Laughter often drifted in from outside. They got to have fun, but I had to handle the mess they left behind. I arrived home very late on my dad's birthday, but both my parents were still awake. My mother frowned when she saw me. "You're late again. Is your work that busy?" My father asked me what I had been busy with. I was quiet for a moment before telling them. "Enzo and Megan are getting transferred to headquarters. A lot of their workload has been dumped on me." My mother frowned at that. "Why do they ge
