Chapter 2

Author: Redleaves
Three days after I sent the letter, the Northern Alpha, Cyrus, arrived at Blackrock Pack.

The North was the strongest pack in the pack. Cyrus also held a ruling seat on the Wolf Council.

Father rushed the elders to the Moon Tower to receive him.

Lila stood at the very front in her Watcher cloak, the Moon Seal gleaming against her chest.

Her silver-white hair caught the morning light like she'd been born to stand there.

I was at the back of the line, almost swallowed by the crowd.

When Cyrus stepped into the Moon Tower, the crisp scent of cedar cut through every wolf's pressure like a blade.

Father bowed first. The elders followed.

Cyrus's gaze swept across the crowd—but passed right over Lila at the front. Landed on me.

"Mara. It's been a while."

I didn't expect him to address me first.

Three years ago, I'd gone to the North as a visiting barrier mage. A vampire attack had broken out on the tundra—I'd drawn new runes on the Northern Moon Tower on the spot and sealed the breach myself.

Cyrus had watched the entire thing from the tower that day.

Now he looked at the cloak on Lila's shoulders. His brow dropped a fraction. Then his eyes found mine again.

"Blackrock's finest barrier mage is you—so why isn't the Moon Watcher title yours?"

I opened my mouth. Father jumped in before I could.

"Lord Cyrus, Lila carries the white wolf bloodline—blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. She is far better suited to protect the pack than an Omega."

Mother jumped in right after. "Lila has been handling the barrier work all these years. Mara only assists occasionally."

Kael puffed his chest. "Lila's constitution is weak because she's been draining her wolf spirit maintaining the arrays—she never once complained to the pack."

The elders chimed in one by one, heaping praise on Lila's sacrifice.

I listened to them weave lie after lie. My fingers curled tight.

Lila was indeed a rare white wolf.

But she'd been frail since birth—her wolf spirit practically useless.

The first time she tried drawing a rune, she passed out for an entire day.

In seven years, she'd never once stepped foot into the Moon Tower's core ward.

A true white wolf wouldn't be that helpless.

But everyone just said her bloodline hadn't awakened yet.

If Cyrus asked her to demonstrate on the spot, every single lie would crumble.

But this was an official pack meeting.

Blackrock was my home. The Fenravens were my family.

I kept my mouth shut.

Cyrus studied Lila for a long moment. Said nothing.

He seemed to see right through it all—but didn't call it out in front of everyone.

He walked straight through the crowd and stopped in front of me.

"I'm giving you my formal answer now—to your email last night."

Everyone turned to look.

"The North values strength above all. We judge by ability, not bloodline."

He leaned down, close to my ear.

The scent of cedar swallowed every other sound in the room.

"I don't believe Lila's barrier skills are stronger than yours."

His voice was soft enough that only I could hear—but firm enough to leave no room for doubt.

"The runes on Blackrock's Moon Tower are identical to the ones you left in the North three years ago. Mara—you will always have a place with us."

My nose burned, sudden and sharp.

"Take your time to think it over," Cyrus said. "I trust you'll make the right call."

He paused, holding my gaze. "He who cannot obey himself will be commanded by others."

His words hit like sparks in the dark—burning through the fog in my chest.

Here, I would always be Lila's sister.

But maybe I didn't have to be.

Cyrus left at dusk.

Lila finally returned the Moon Seal to me.

I looked down. A new name was carved into the back of the silver seal.

Lila Fenraven.

My thumb traced the engraving—slowly—until the sharp edge bit into my skin.

"Why did you carve her name on it?"

Mother wouldn't meet my eyes. Like she was explaining, or making excuses for them.

"The head elder said the Seal should record the Watcher's name. It's just a few extra letters—doesn't affect how you use it."

I turned to Lila.

"You think your name belongs on this Seal?"

Her eyes instantly went red. She grabbed the obsidian blade off the table.

"If it bothers you that much, sister, I'll scrape it off."

She raised the blade to the Seal.

"Even if it ruins the Watcher's symbol—I don't want you to be upset."

The tip barely touched the metal before Mother lunged forward.

"Don't be ridiculous! A Watcher's name can't be erased once it's carved—it's tradition!"

Kael's voice came down hard. "Lila needs this title to unite the pack. It's for the family. Why do you always have to make everything about you?"

Family. Again.

I lifted my head to my father.

"Then give me the silver fir pack east of the Moon Tower. That was supposed to be the Watcher's land."

Lila clutched her cloak instinctively. "No—that pack will eventually merge with the Alpha's jurisdiction."

Father didn't even hesitate.

"Lila is the future Alpha. Fenraven land stays with her."

The land they'd once promised me as compensation.

Just words thrown out without meaning. Not a promise at all.

Whatever faint hope I'd been clinging to—died that night.

I sent my formal reply to Cyrus.

Short. Clean. Like the cut I'd finally decided to make.

I've made up my mind.

I'm joining the North.

The moment Ivy's words landed, the square went deathly cold."She's not a white wolf," Ivy confirmed. "She has a rare congenital condition—albinism.""Impossible!" Mother's head snapped up. "Lila was born pure white!""Fur color doesn't prove bloodline." Ivy's voice was ice. "A true white wolf's spirit would never be this weak."Kael stepped in front of Lila. "It was just a fluke! Lila wasn't in good form—that's why she couldn't activate the barrier.""Exactly!" Father jumped in. "A simple mistake!"I didn't argue. I just pressed my hand to the Moon Tower's barrier core. The dormant runes blazed to life in an instant. The pack looked up at the protective barrier—and finally understood. For seven years, the one standing in that core had never been Lila.It had been me.The head elder walked onto the dais, his gaze passing over me and landing on the unconscious Lila."Mara. What is the meaning of this?"This time, no one could stop me from telling the truth.I laid it all out—everything

Back at Blackrock, the moment I stepped off the carriage—Father's voice cut through like a whip. "Get to the Moon Tower. Activate the barrier. Now."I didn't move. "Post the announcement first."His eyes narrowed. "What announcement?"I whipped my head around and locked eyes with him.Father smiled. He spread his arms wide."Mara. Did you really think this was still the North? This is Blackrock. My word is law."My stomach dropped. The so-called announcement was nothing but bait to drag me back."I'm Mara—but I'm not just Mara. Don't forget—" I held his gaze, word by word. "I'm Mara North. A citizen of the North."The smile vanished from his face."As long as Fenraven blood runs in your veins—you obey me!"Alpha pressure slammed down like a hammer.I staggered—but before I could even brace myself, the six attendants behind me stepped forward at once. They threw back their cloaks. Silver wolf guard emblems gleamed.Six walls of pressure fused into a single barrier—and caught my father'

Kael didn't leave the North.Instead, the entire Fenraven family showed up.Cyrus asked for my opinion first, then received them with me in the council's winter hall.Father's face was carved from stone, but he gritted his teeth and bowed to Cyrus anyway.Mother came to me first, both hands holding out the gray-blue moonstone."Mara, this is yours." Her voice cracked. "I took it back for you."I looked at the familiar stone. Reached out and took it.When I didn't push it away, hope flickered in her eyes."Mara—you kept it. Does that mean you're willing to forgive me?"I closed my fingers around the moonstone."It was always mine."The hope in her smile froze."I'm just taking back what belongs to me. That doesn't mean I forgive you."Her face went pale—like I'd stabbed her clean through. She looked down at her own hands and whispered, "What else do you want?""Nothing."I looked at her calmly. "You don't owe me anything else. And you don't get to ask me for anything else."Her shoulder

When the attendant informed me that Kael was requesting an audience, I was at the rune table, studying a grimoire. The attendant bowed. "He said it's urgent."I raised an eyebrow and decided to see him.Consider it closing the book on the past.Kael stood at the end of the corridor, his posture as arrogant as ever."Mara. Had enough?" He gave me a once-over. "Come back to Blackrock."I closed the grimoire and looked at him flatly."I'm not throwing a tantrum. And I didn't run away."Kael scoffed. "You left without a word—what else would you call it?""That place wasn't my home."The smirk vanished from his face."Blackrock is where you were born. The Fenravens raised you for over twenty years—and now you're saying it's not home?""Blood doesn't automatically make a home."I held his gaze. "I've formally joined the North. My name is Mara North now."Kael's eyes went dark."Who gave you permission to sever ties without the Alpha's approval?"He stepped closer, letting his pressure bleed

Lila's POVBy the time they returned from inspecting the silver fir pack, the sky had gone completely dark.Lila sat in the carriage, fingertips tracing the moonstone at her throat, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. The silver fir pack was richer than she'd imagined—two moonstone mines tucked within its borders.Father said that once she took over as Alpha, the land would officially pass into her name.Territory like that—it was only fitting for a noble white wolf.Back at the estate, Mother ordered the servants to prepare dinner.Everyone took their seats. Only when Mara's place stayed empty—did someone finally notice."Where's Mara?" Mother asked. The servant kept their head down. "Miss Mara left this morning with her bags. She hasn't returned."Mother's expression flickered. She rose and went straight to Mara's room. The room had nothing left—just a plain wooden bed and empty shelves. No note.Mother stood by the door, staring at the bare space, a flicker of confusion in her ey

When I arrived at the North, Cyrus sent me straight to the best healing facility in the city.It normally only treated Northern nobility.Twelve wolf guards stood watch outside. No one got near without clearance.Cyrus even brought in his personal healer, Ivy, to mend my wolf spirit.Ivy pressed her hand over my heart, reading the state of my wolf spirit from the inside. Her face went grim."Your wolf spirit is dangerously weak—severe barrier backlash. You missed the optimal healing window by a long shot."She frowned. "Another half day, and you might never have shifted again."I stared at my palms. At Blackrock's Moon Tower, I'd passed out alone on that cold stone floor. No healer came. No one brought me so much as a pain draught.Lila was too busy soaking up the pack's praise. My parents and brother were too busy guarding her.No one cared whether the one who'd actually entered the core array would wake up at all. They'd even taken the moonstone that could have healed me.But none of
