Chapter 2

Penulis: richer
Seeing this, Monica hurried to crouch beside Angela and soothe her.

“Don’t cry, Angela. We can always make another figurine. And look, your picture is torn. Let me glue it back together for you, okay?”

As she spoke, she reached out and took the two halves of the picture from Angela’s arms.

Angela lunged forward to snatch it back.

Suddenly, Monica knocked over the glass of water on the table, and the picture was soaked.

By the time I fished it out, the three figures on the paper had blurred into an indistinguishable mess.

Angela stared at the ruined picture before finally bursting into tears.

“Mommy, the family I drew is gone.”

Monica hurriedly pulled out some tissues and offered them to her.

“I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to. Angela, why don’t you draw another one?”

I knocked her hand away.

“Get out.”

Edward handed Andrew over to her and said quietly, “Take him to the guest room first. I need to talk to Catherine.”

Only after the bedroom door closed did he grab my wrist.

“That’s enough, isn’t it? Monica has already apologized.”

I wrenched my hand free.

“Can’t you see Angela is crying?”

“What’s the big deal if a child cries for a little while?”

He lowered his voice.

“Monica hasn’t been emotionally stable since her husband died. What if you upset her by kicking her out in front of Andrew?”

I stared at him and suddenly asked, “What about Angela?”

“She has both her parents. She’s never gone without anything since she was born.”

Edward paused, then added, “Stop spoiling her so much. She makes a fuss over every little thing, whether it’s a picture or a little figurine. How is she ever going to get along with other people if she keeps acting like this?”

Angela’s crying suddenly stopped in the bedroom.

I turned and saw her standing behind the door.

With her head lowered, she folded the ruined picture and slipped it into her pocket.

“Daddy, I won’t make a fuss anymore.”

Edward looked uncomfortable and reached out to hug her.

Angela took a step back and closed the door.

The next day, her teacher called to tell me that Angela had been crying in the school toilet for a long time and refused to come out.

I didn’t have time to ask for more details. I rushed straight to the school.

As I approached the office, I overheard two teachers talking.

“I saw the interview, too. Andrew’s mom and the Alpha really did look like a family.”

“But isn’t the Alpha Angela’s father?”

“Andrew has been going around telling everyone that the Alpha is his father, too. Some of the children even laughed at Angela and said her dad likes Andrew more than her.”

When I pushed open the door, Angela was already in the office.

The moment she saw me, she ran over and clutched my hand tightly.

The teachers immediately stopped talking.

“Angela’s mom, I’m so sorry. The children didn’t know any better. We’ve already spoken to them about their behavior.”

I crouched down and asked Angela, “Did someone bully you?”

She shook her head.

But the teacher hesitated before taking out a sheet of paper.

It showed a man dressed in blue, holding Andrew’s hand while pushing Angela away with his other hand.

“One of the children in the class drew this. When Angela saw it, she locked herself in the toilet and refused to come out.”

It felt as though something had lodged in my chest, making it hard to breathe.

Before I could say anything, Edward walked in with Monica.

Monica’s eyes were red and swollen.

“Teacher, the interview was really just a misunderstanding. Andrew has grown up without a father’s love, so he got used to calling Edward Dad without thinking.”

Edward picked up where she left off.

“This is just a little disagreement between children. There’s no need to blow it out of proportion.”

I handed him the drawing.

“Your daughter is being laughed at by her entire class for not having a father, and you still call this a little disagreement?”

He glanced at the picture, his brows drawing together slightly.

“I’ll explain things to Angela.”

Andrew ran out from behind Monica and grabbed Edward’s hand.

“Daddy Edward, the teacher said I’m not allowed to call you Daddy anymore.”

Edward crouched down to his level.

“That’s not what the teacher meant.”

“Then can I still call you Daddy?”

Andrew looked up at him hopefully.

Monica gently tried to persuade him otherwise.

“Forget it. We shouldn’t upset Angela. Andrew, you need to call him Alpha from now on.”

Andrew immediately burst into tears.

“I don’t want to call him Alpha! I want Daddy Edward!”

The parents standing nearby all turned to look.

Embarrassed, Edward turned to Angela.

“Andrew only calls me that in private. He’s not going to take your daddy away from you. You’re a little older than him, so you’re the big sister. You should yield to him.”

Angela stared at him blankly.

“But I’m only three months older than him.”

Edward’s expression darkened.

“Even one day older makes you the older one. Stop being so childish.”

Just then, his phone rang.

A notice appeared in the class group chat from the teacher.

[To avoid any misunderstandings regarding family relationships, could the Alpha please confirm whose parent he will be at tomorrow’s parent-child hunting class?]

Andrew snatched the phone and pressed the voice message button.

“Daddy Edward is obviously coming to spend the day with me!”

The moment the voice message was sent, Edward made no attempt to delete it.

When Angela walked in holding my mother’s hand, Edward instinctively got to his feet. She saw him and paused. This time, she didn’t tremble or shrink away. She simply looked at him in silence.Edward crouched down, his eyes reddening.“Angela, Daddy wants to make it up to you.”Her gaze fell on the mate bond dissolution agreement lying on the table.“Does that mean you won’t be my daddy anymore?”“I still will.”His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed.“If you want me to, I’ll always be your daddy.”Angela thought about it for a while.“Will someone borrow you again?”Tears spilled down Edward’s cheeks.“No. Never again.”But she shook her head.“But I don’t want to wait for you anymore.”“Daddy can wait for you.”“How long?”“As long as it takes.”Angela didn’t answer. Instead, she pushed the damaged drawing she’d made earlier toward Edward.“You can have this.”Edward’s hands trembled violently.“You don’t want it anymore?”“My teacher told me to draw a new one.”Her voice was soft.

Edward messaged me the next morning.[Monica had low blood sugar, but she’s fine now.][There was no one with Andrew last night. I couldn’t leave a child alone at the healing lodge.][Catherine, this was an exceptional circumstance.]I handed all three messages to David.“Add them to the evidence.”After reading them, David shook his head.“He keeps proving that you made the right decision by leaving him.”On the day of The Elders’s mediation, Edward arrived half an hour late. His shirt was wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. The first thing he said after sitting down was, “I don’t agree to dissolving our mate bond.”I placed the records I’d compiled on the table.Thirty phone calls. Twenty-one times he’d left at the last minute. Nine times he’d missed Angela’s important events. On top was the evidence showing that he had deleted the school’s surveillance footage.Edward stared at the thick stack of papers, his expression growing stiffer by the second.“You’ve been keeping tr

On the third day after I returned to the Radiant Pack, Edward showed up with a box of belongings. The moment I opened the door, he pushed the box toward me.“I brought Angela’s picture books, clothes, and the little night-light from her bedside.”I looked through the contents but didn’t invite him inside.“Thank you.”The polite response made his expression stiffen.“Do we really have to talk to each other like this?”“How else should I address you, Alpha?”He stared at me for a long time.“I’ve already told Monica not to contact me anymore.”“That’s your business.”“You used to care about this.”“That was before.”Angela’s voice came from inside the house.Edward instinctively looked past me.“How is she doing today?”“Her follow-up examination went well.”“Can I see her?”“I asked her. She doesn’t want to see you.”His fingers rubbed against the edge of the box, and his voice grew hoarse.“I made her a new little wolf figurine and a new bow and arrows. He suddenly grabbed my wrist. Before he could say a word, Angela’s crying rang out from inside the infirmary. The healer opened the door.“The child keeps saying she doesn’t want her daddy anymore.”Edward’s grip loosened little by little. He stood outside the door, watching Angela bury her face in my arms.“Mommy, please close the door.”“Daddy isn’t coming in. Daddy just wants to—”I didn’t wait for him to finish. I closed the door right in front of him.He didn’t leave. He stayed outside, watching us through the glass. That afternoon, Edward’s mother, Scarlett, arrived at the healing lodge. But the first thing she asked was, “Monica called me. She said you’re planning to hold Andrew accountable?”I tucked the blanket around Angela.“He locked Angela inside the prop room. He should apologize and be taught that his behavior is unacceptable.”Scarlett lowered her voice.“What does a five-year-old know? Besides, Angela is fine, isn’t she?”I looked at her.“Who told you she was fine?”“

I struck the door again and again, until the claws throbbed with excruciating pain. The door finally opened.I rushed inside and pulled away the fallen curtains. Angela was curled up in a corner, her little face already pale.“Angela, look at Mommy.”She couldn’t open her eyes. She could only manage to grasp one of my fingers.A healer hurried over and rushed her to the healing lodge.Edward tried to follow, but I raised a hand to stop him.“Don’t touch her.”“Catherine, this isn’t the time to throw a tantrum.”“When you deleted the security footage, did you ever consider that she might die in the room?”All the color drained from his face.Monica came running after us, carrying Andrew in her arms.“Alpha, please don’t leave yet. The teacher said she’s going to report this to The Elders. Andrew is so young. We can’t let this incident go on his record.”Edward glanced at the ambulance, then turned to look at her. That one glance was all it took.I shut the ambulance door.By the time w

  • No More Waiting for a Borrowed Father   Chapter 4

On the day Edward attended the parent-child hunting class, Angela never entered the classroom.Clutching her repaired bow, she sat at the far end of the hallway. When her teacher called me, Angela kept repeating the same sentence.“Daddy isn’t my daddy today.”By the time I arrived at the school, Monica was taking pictures of Edward and Andrew with her phone. The three of them stood together as Edward patiently straightened Andrew’s collar, his expression gentle. The moment Angela spotted him, she still ran over.“Daddy.”Edward turned around, a slight frown creasing his brow.“Why aren’t you inside yet?”“The teacher told me to find my daddy.”She held out her bow and arrows.“You just have to hold these and take a picture with me. It’ll only take a minute.”Andrew immediately wrapped his arms around Edward’s leg.“No! He’s mine today.”Monica scolded him softly. “Andrew, you can’t say that. The Alpha is Angela’s father, after all.”Andrew’s lower lip trembled.“But you told me last n
