Chapter 1

My father replied almost immediately.

[Sweetheart, you will always be welcome home. But you need to think this through. Once the bond is severed, there will be no going back.]

I confirmed my decision almost without hesitation.

Almost at the same moment, Edward came home.

He was still wearing the light blue matching shirt from the interview, with a smear of cream on his cuff.

Monica followed close behind him, holding Andrew’s hand.

“Is there anything to eat? Andrew said he was hungry as soon as the event ended.”

Edward draped his coat over the back of a chair and gave me his usual casual instructions.

“Make some pasta. Extra meat sauce. He likes it that way.”

I didn’t move.

Clutching the torn picture, Angela peeked out from behind me.

“Daddy, why didn’t you come to Family Day with me?”

Only then did Edward seem to remember that I had reminded him more than once that Angela’s Family Day was today.

He paused for two seconds before bending down to pat her head.

“Daddy had something come up at the last minute. I promise I’ll go with you next time, okay?”

Angela dodged his hand.

“Teacher said today was the last Family Day of the year.”

“It was just a school event. There’ll be plenty of time for Daddy to spend with you later.”

After placating our daughter with another empty promise, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a gold medal.

“Look what Daddy brought you.”

Angela’s eyes lit up for a moment.

But as soon as she took the medal, her smile quickly faded.

Another name was engraved on the back.

Andrew.

Monica immediately covered her mouth, feigning shock.

“Oh, Alpha, you picked up the wrong one! This is Andrew’s medal from this year’s family interview. He won the Award for the Closest Father-Son Bond.”

Edward frowned and took the medal from Angela’s hands.

“If it belongs to Andrew, then give it back to him. Be a good girl, Angela. Daddy will get you something else next time.”

Angela’s hands remained cupped as if she were still holding the medal.

It took a long time before she finally lowered them.

“But Daddy used to say that you had to earn a medal yourself. One you bought didn’t count.”

Edward’s expression stiffened.

Andrew had already snatched the medal and hung it around his neck. He tipped his head back and stuck his tongue out at Angela.

“Daddy Edward spent the whole day drawing pictures and playing games with me. Everyone said we were a happy family.”

Angela lowered her head and clenched the two halves of her picture tighter, crumpling them further.

I stepped in front of her.

“Why don’t you go out to eat?”

Edward’s face darkened.

“Catherine, the children are right here. Do you really have to act like this?”

Monica hurriedly grabbed his arm.

“Forget it. Catherine is still upset. Andrew and I can go back home. The power’s out there, but we can manage for one night.”

“How are you supposed to stay there without electricity?”

Edward rubbed his temples.

“The guest room is empty. You two can stay here tonight.”

I looked up at him.

“That’s not appropriate.”

“What’s inappropriate about it? It’s not as if we don’t have enough room.”

He glanced at Angela, his tone softening a little.

“I was wrong not to attend our daughter’s Family Day. I’ll spend some time playing with her later. Monica is only staying for one night. Don’t make things difficult for her.”

Angela suddenly tugged at my sleeve.

“Mommy, I want to go to bed.”

I took her hand and led her toward her bedroom.

Behind us, Andrew spotted the little wolf figurine on her bedside table. He broke free of Monica’s grip and ran into the room.

“This is so cute! I want it.”

It was the little wolf figurine Edward had personally sculpted for Angela’s birthday.

Angela finally panicked and reached for it.

“That’s mine!”

Andrew hid the figurine behind his back.

“Daddy Edward says you should share good things with everyone.”

As the two children struggled over it, the figurine slipped from their hands and shattered on the floor.

Angela froze.

Edward came over and immediately pulled Andrew behind him protectively.

“It’s just a figurine. If it’s broken, Daddy will make Angela another one.”

Angela lifted her face, tears welling in her eyes.

“Daddy, that’s the second time today you’ve given something of mine to him.”

Edward opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Angela lowered her head and hugged the torn picture tightly against her chest, as if it were the only thing she had left to prove that Daddy had once belonged to her.

When Angela walked in holding my mother’s hand, Edward instinctively got to his feet. She saw him and paused. This time, she didn’t tremble or shrink away. She simply looked at him in silence.Edward crouched down, his eyes reddening.“Angela, Daddy wants to make it up to you.”Her gaze fell on the mate bond dissolution agreement lying on the table.“Does that mean you won’t be my daddy anymore?”“I still will.”His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed.“If you want me to, I’ll always be your daddy.”Angela thought about it for a while.“Will someone borrow you again?”Tears spilled down Edward’s cheeks.“No. Never again.”But she shook her head.“But I don’t want to wait for you anymore.”“Daddy can wait for you.”“How long?”“As long as it takes.”Angela didn’t answer. Instead, she pushed the damaged drawing she’d made earlier toward Edward.“You can have this.”Edward’s hands trembled violently.“You don’t want it anymore?”“My teacher told me to draw a new one.”Her voice was soft.

Edward messaged me the next morning.[Monica had low blood sugar, but she’s fine now.][There was no one with Andrew last night. I couldn’t leave a child alone at the healing lodge.][Catherine, this was an exceptional circumstance.]I handed all three messages to David.“Add them to the evidence.”After reading them, David shook his head.“He keeps proving that you made the right decision by leaving him.”On the day of The Elders’s mediation, Edward arrived half an hour late. His shirt was wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. The first thing he said after sitting down was, “I don’t agree to dissolving our mate bond.”I placed the records I’d compiled on the table.Thirty phone calls. Twenty-one times he’d left at the last minute. Nine times he’d missed Angela’s important events. On top was the evidence showing that he had deleted the school’s surveillance footage.Edward stared at the thick stack of papers, his expression growing stiffer by the second.“You’ve been keeping tr

On the third day after I returned to the Radiant Pack, Edward showed up with a box of belongings. The moment I opened the door, he pushed the box toward me.“I brought Angela’s picture books, clothes, and the little night-light from her bedside.”I looked through the contents but didn’t invite him inside.“Thank you.”The polite response made his expression stiffen.“Do we really have to talk to each other like this?”“How else should I address you, Alpha?”He stared at me for a long time.“I’ve already told Monica not to contact me anymore.”“That’s your business.”“You used to care about this.”“That was before.”Angela’s voice came from inside the house.Edward instinctively looked past me.“How is she doing today?”“Her follow-up examination went well.”“Can I see her?”“I asked her. She doesn’t want to see you.”His fingers rubbed against the edge of the box, and his voice grew hoarse.“I made her a new little wolf figurine and a new bow and arrows. He suddenly grabbed my wrist. Before he could say a word, Angela’s crying rang out from inside the infirmary. The healer opened the door.“The child keeps saying she doesn’t want her daddy anymore.”Edward’s grip loosened little by little. He stood outside the door, watching Angela bury her face in my arms.“Mommy, please close the door.”“Daddy isn’t coming in. Daddy just wants to—”I didn’t wait for him to finish. I closed the door right in front of him.He didn’t leave. He stayed outside, watching us through the glass. That afternoon, Edward’s mother, Scarlett, arrived at the healing lodge. But the first thing she asked was, “Monica called me. She said you’re planning to hold Andrew accountable?”I tucked the blanket around Angela.“He locked Angela inside the prop room. He should apologize and be taught that his behavior is unacceptable.”Scarlett lowered her voice.“What does a five-year-old know? Besides, Angela is fine, isn’t she?”I looked at her.“Who told you she was fine?”“

I struck the door again and again, until the claws throbbed with excruciating pain. The door finally opened.I rushed inside and pulled away the fallen curtains. Angela was curled up in a corner, her little face already pale.“Angela, look at Mommy.”She couldn’t open her eyes. She could only manage to grasp one of my fingers.A healer hurried over and rushed her to the healing lodge.Edward tried to follow, but I raised a hand to stop him.“Don’t touch her.”“Catherine, this isn’t the time to throw a tantrum.”“When you deleted the security footage, did you ever consider that she might die in the room?”All the color drained from his face.Monica came running after us, carrying Andrew in her arms.“Alpha, please don’t leave yet. The teacher said she’s going to report this to The Elders. Andrew is so young. We can’t let this incident go on his record.”Edward glanced at the ambulance, then turned to look at her. That one glance was all it took.I shut the ambulance door.By the time w

On the day Edward attended the parent-child hunting class, Angela never entered the classroom.Clutching her repaired bow, she sat at the far end of the hallway. When her teacher called me, Angela kept repeating the same sentence.“Daddy isn’t my daddy today.”By the time I arrived at the school, Monica was taking pictures of Edward and Andrew with her phone. The three of them stood together as Edward patiently straightened Andrew’s collar, his expression gentle. The moment Angela spotted him, she still ran over.“Daddy.”Edward turned around, a slight frown creasing his brow.“Why aren’t you inside yet?”“The teacher told me to find my daddy.”She held out her bow and arrows.“You just have to hold these and take a picture with me. It’ll only take a minute.”Andrew immediately wrapped his arms around Edward’s leg.“No! He’s mine today.”Monica scolded him softly. “Andrew, you can’t say that. The Alpha is Angela’s father, after all.”Andrew’s lower lip trembled.“But you told me last n
