Chapter 3

Author: richer
With the teacher standing right there, Edward gave his answer.

“I’ll accompany Andrew to tomorrow’s parent-child hunting class.”

I asked him, “You promised Angela that you’d teach her how to make her own bow and arrows during the hunting class.”

“There’ll be other opportunities.”

His tone was indifferent. “Andrew has already been teased by his classmates over Daddy. If I don’t go, he’ll be even more embarrassed.”

“So you’re going to spare him the embarrassment by making your own daughter suffer instead?”

Edward glanced around at the people nearby.

“Don’t argue with me at school. You’re making a scene.”

Monica’s eyes reddened as she tried to explain.

“Catherine, I can ask the Alpha not to go, but Andrew’s therapist said he needs a father figure by his side right now.”

I stared at her.

“My daughter had three nightmares last night.”

“Angela has you to comfort her.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, Monica seemed to realize how inappropriate they sounded. She quickly softened her tone.

“I mean, Angela is luckier than Andrew.”

Angela suddenly looked up.

“I can lend Daddy to Andrew for one day.”

“But he’s already borrowed him for so many days.”

She counted on her fingers.

“My birthday, the sports day, the therapy appointments, Family Day, and now the parent-child hunting class. When will he give Daddy back to me?”

No one answered.

When we got home, Angela took a bow and arrow out of the cabinet.

Edward had made them for her himself. He wasn’t particularly skilled at carving, so it had taken him an entire month to finish them.

Crookedly carved into the wood were the words: For my beloved daughter, Angela.

She carried the bowinto the living room.

“Daddy, can you teach me tonight? Then I can try making my own tomorrow.”

Edward was busy preparing the materials Andrew would need for the parent-child hunting class.

He didn’t even look up.

“Daddy’s busy. Ask Mommy.”

“But the teacher said Daddy has to teach me.”

“Does that mean everything the teacher says is automatically right?”

Irritated by Angela’questions, he reached for a piece of wood and accidentally knocked the bow and arrows onto the floor.

Andrew stepped right on them. The bow snapped under his foot.

Angela let out a scream and shoved him.

Andrew immediately dropped to the floor and burst into tears.

Monica rushed over and gathered her son into her arms.

“Andrew, are you hurt?”

Edward grabbed Angela by the arm.

“Who taught you to push people?”

Angela pointed at the broken bow through her tears.

“He broke it!”

“Are things more important than people?”

“Daddy made that for me.”

“If it’s broken, we can just make another one.”

“You won’t make another one for me.”

Edward visibly froze for a moment.

I scooped Angela into my arms.

“Pushing someone was wrong, and I’ll teach her that. But Andrew broke her things, so he should apologize, too.”

After checking her son over, Monica said gently, “Andrew didn’t do it on purpose. Angela was the one who got physical first. Why don’t we have her apologize first?”

Edward nodded.

“You heard her, didn’t you?”

Angela lay against my shoulder without saying a word.

He reached out and took her from me.

“Apologize. Don’t make Daddy tell you twice.”

Angela’s body went rigid. Tears fell one by one onto her clothes.

“I’m sorry.”

Andrew wiped away his tears and hid in Monica’s arms.

“I don’t forgive you unless you give me the bow and arrows.”

Edward picked up the broken bow.

“Take them. They’re already broken anyway.”

Angela suddenly began struggling in his arms.

“No! Those are mine!”

Afraid she might fall, Edward had no choice but to put her down.

She lunged for the broken bow, but a jagged piece of wood sliced a bloody line across her palm.

I immediately took her hand in mine.

Edward instinctively reached toward her, too, but Andrew suddenly clutched his stomach and began crying.

Monica hurriedly called out, “Alpha, come check on Andrew!”

Edward’s hand stopped in midair. In the end, he turned toward Andrew instead.

After tending to Angela’s wound, I took out my phone and forwarded him the mate bond dissolution papers my father had sent me.

“Edward, take a look at this when you have time.”

He glanced at the title before immediately turning off the screen.

“Are you trying to scare me?”

His tone was utterly certain.

“You can’t bear the thought of Angela growing up without a father, and you can’t bear to lose this family, either. ”

When Angela walked in holding my mother’s hand, Edward instinctively got to his feet. She saw him and paused. This time, she didn’t tremble or shrink away. She simply looked at him in silence.Edward crouched down, his eyes reddening.“Angela, Daddy wants to make it up to you.”Her gaze fell on the mate bond dissolution agreement lying on the table.“Does that mean you won’t be my daddy anymore?”“I still will.”His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed.“If you want me to, I’ll always be your daddy.”Angela thought about it for a while.“Will someone borrow you again?”Tears spilled down Edward’s cheeks.“No. Never again.”But she shook her head.“But I don’t want to wait for you anymore.”“Daddy can wait for you.”“How long?”“As long as it takes.”Angela didn’t answer. Instead, she pushed the damaged drawing she’d made earlier toward Edward.“You can have this.”Edward’s hands trembled violently.“You don’t want it anymore?”“My teacher told me to draw a new one.”Her voice was soft.

Edward messaged me the next morning.[Monica had low blood sugar, but she’s fine now.][There was no one with Andrew last night. I couldn’t leave a child alone at the healing lodge.][Catherine, this was an exceptional circumstance.]I handed all three messages to David.“Add them to the evidence.”After reading them, David shook his head.“He keeps proving that you made the right decision by leaving him.”On the day of The Elders’s mediation, Edward arrived half an hour late. His shirt was wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. The first thing he said after sitting down was, “I don’t agree to dissolving our mate bond.”I placed the records I’d compiled on the table.Thirty phone calls. Twenty-one times he’d left at the last minute. Nine times he’d missed Angela’s important events. On top was the evidence showing that he had deleted the school’s surveillance footage.Edward stared at the thick stack of papers, his expression growing stiffer by the second.“You’ve been keeping tr

On the third day after I returned to the Radiant Pack, Edward showed up with a box of belongings. The moment I opened the door, he pushed the box toward me.“I brought Angela’s picture books, clothes, and the little night-light from her bedside.”I looked through the contents but didn’t invite him inside.“Thank you.”The polite response made his expression stiffen.“Do we really have to talk to each other like this?”“How else should I address you, Alpha?”He stared at me for a long time.“I’ve already told Monica not to contact me anymore.”“That’s your business.”“You used to care about this.”“That was before.”Angela’s voice came from inside the house.Edward instinctively looked past me.“How is she doing today?”“Her follow-up examination went well.”“Can I see her?”“I asked her. She doesn’t want to see you.”His fingers rubbed against the edge of the box, and his voice grew hoarse.“I made her a new little wolf figurine and a new bow and arrows. He suddenly grabbed my wrist. Before he could say a word, Angela’s crying rang out from inside the infirmary. The healer opened the door.“The child keeps saying she doesn’t want her daddy anymore.”Edward’s grip loosened little by little. He stood outside the door, watching Angela bury her face in my arms.“Mommy, please close the door.”“Daddy isn’t coming in. Daddy just wants to—”I didn’t wait for him to finish. I closed the door right in front of him.He didn’t leave. He stayed outside, watching us through the glass. That afternoon, Edward’s mother, Scarlett, arrived at the healing lodge. But the first thing she asked was, “Monica called me. She said you’re planning to hold Andrew accountable?”I tucked the blanket around Angela.“He locked Angela inside the prop room. He should apologize and be taught that his behavior is unacceptable.”Scarlett lowered her voice.“What does a five-year-old know? Besides, Angela is fine, isn’t she?”I looked at her.“Who told you she was fine?”“

I struck the door again and again, until the claws throbbed with excruciating pain. The door finally opened.I rushed inside and pulled away the fallen curtains. Angela was curled up in a corner, her little face already pale.“Angela, look at Mommy.”She couldn’t open her eyes. She could only manage to grasp one of my fingers.A healer hurried over and rushed her to the healing lodge.Edward tried to follow, but I raised a hand to stop him.“Don’t touch her.”“Catherine, this isn’t the time to throw a tantrum.”“When you deleted the security footage, did you ever consider that she might die in the room?”All the color drained from his face.Monica came running after us, carrying Andrew in her arms.“Alpha, please don’t leave yet. The teacher said she’s going to report this to The Elders. Andrew is so young. We can’t let this incident go on his record.”Edward glanced at the ambulance, then turned to look at her. That one glance was all it took.I shut the ambulance door.By the time w

On the day Edward attended the parent-child hunting class, Angela never entered the classroom.Clutching her repaired bow, she sat at the far end of the hallway. When her teacher called me, Angela kept repeating the same sentence.“Daddy isn’t my daddy today.”By the time I arrived at the school, Monica was taking pictures of Edward and Andrew with her phone. The three of them stood together as Edward patiently straightened Andrew’s collar, his expression gentle. The moment Angela spotted him, she still ran over.“Daddy.”Edward turned around, a slight frown creasing his brow.“Why aren’t you inside yet?”“The teacher told me to find my daddy.”She held out her bow and arrows.“You just have to hold these and take a picture with me. It’ll only take a minute.”Andrew immediately wrapped his arms around Edward’s leg.“No! He’s mine today.”Monica scolded him softly. “Andrew, you can’t say that. The Alpha is Angela’s father, after all.”Andrew’s lower lip trembled.“But you told me last n
