Chapter 2

Author: Aero
I was jolted awake by a nightmare in the middle of the night, slipped out of Vito's arms, and stepped onto the balcony to let the cool breeze clear my head.

I must have drifted off there, because the next thing I knew, Vito was lifting me in his arms and I startled awake. He gave a bitter smile.

"What are you doing out here on the balcony instead of in bed?"

The words had barely left his mouth when his expression shifted.

"Why are you burning up?"

I felt empty and didn't want to answer. Instead, I let his palm settle on my forehead, its coolness a sharp contrast to my feverish skin.

He frowned, wrapped me in a cashmere blanket, and began changing my clothes without a word.

I raised my weak hand to push him away.

"I can do it myself."

The fever made my tongue feel clumsy in my mouth.

Vito brushed my hand aside without effort.

"How many times have I helped you get changed? And now you're shy?"

He dressed me firmly, then carried me down to the car.

We drove straight to one of New York's top private hospitals.

But the moment the nurse slid the needle into my vein, urgent footsteps came rushing down the corridor outside.

"Sia's stomach is acting up again. She's just been brought into the ER next door."

Vito's composure cracked instantly. Without a glance at the IV still running in my arm, he strode toward the door.

"Where are the doctors? Get all of them in here."

"Vito."

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

He paused. Something flickered in his eyes, and then he let out a slow breath.

"Bianca, stay here and finish your drip. They'll take good care of you."

"Nothing is going to happen between us. I promise."

Once, I would have wept and raged and demanded he send her away.

But now my face was still, my lips curved in a faint, hollow smile.

"All right."

Vito seemed not to have expected that. He pressed his lips together.

Then he stepped closer, his gaze soft and earnest.

"I'll be back soon."

He turned and walked out of the room.

I pushed the IV stand slowly to the doorway.

Through the glass, I watched Vito interrogate a group of doctors in a cold, cutting voice.

On the bed, Sia lay still, her eyes closed and her breathing deliberately slow. But the instant Vito turned his back, her eyes opened.

She tilted her head slightly and looked straight at me, standing outside the door.

The pale, fragile face of a moment ago now wore a quiet smile of someone who had already won.

She lay there on the pillow, watching me, her lips moving without a sound.

But I understood the shape of the words.

He is mine.

So the stomach pain was never real. Sia was testing him, playing a card to see just how much Vito cared.

I turned away without a word and pushed the IV stand back to my bed.

Fine. It didn't matter. I was leaving soon anyway.

The place beside Vito was hers to take.

At some point the medication pulled me under.

When I came to, it was the nurse's startled cry that woke me.

"Miss Rossi! You've moved — the blood is flowing back!"

I opened my eyes and stared at the dark thread of blood reversing up the IV line. My head throbbed.

The nurse re-inserted the needle and then gently said, with an apologetic look:

"Miss Rossi, Mr. Carlisi left with Miss Sia about an hour ago."

"He said Miss Sia hated staying in hospital. She needed to recover at the estate."

I pushed myself upright through the weakness and called Vito.

The phone rang for a long time before he picked up.

When he heard I was still at the hospital, he paused, then his voice turned warm.

"Sorry, babe, I'll come get you right now —"

Before he could finish, Sia's voice came through the line, thin and trembling.

"Vito... my stomach... it hurts so bad."

He went quiet. I heard him muffle the receiver, his voice dropping as he soothed her. Then, lower still, he spoke to me.

"Bianca, let the driver take you home."

"I'll be back later."

My voice, when it came, was calm in a way that surprised even me. Not a ripple.

"It's fine. I can get home on my own."

On the other end of the line, Vito seemed to catch something in that stillness.

"Bianca, are you angry?"

"No."

In this world, no one is so essential to another that life cannot go on without them.

Vito, you are no exception.

Three months later. Red Hook Terminal.Vito stood beside the stacked crates, watching his men count the boxes, his expression unreadable. His underboss Marco moved closer and lowered his voice. "Vito, the route was changed at the last minute. The other side confirmed it too. Should be fine."Vito gave a single nod and said nothing.Brooklyn nights were quiet, with only the lap of water in the harbor and the occasional low groan of a passing freighter. The exchange was halfway through when the silence around them turned wrong."Ambush!"Marco was the first to react, drawing his gun and returning fire. Figures poured out of the darkness — only gunshots and footsteps answered, as if they had known the Carlisi family's route all along."Fall back! Head for the docks!"Vito fired as he retreated, a bullet grazing past his ear.Almost there. One more sprint across the open ground and they'd be at the boat.Marco was covering his left flank, a bullet already in his shoulder."Vito, go."The

When Sia pushed open the door, she was startled by the scene before her.Empty bottles littered the floor, and the air was thick with the sharp sting of alcohol and the heavy reek of tobacco. In the middle of the living room carpet, Vito sat slumped, eyes bloodshot, stubble rough on his jaw, one hand still clutching a half-empty bottle of whiskey. His hair, always so meticulously groomed, was a disheveled mess, and his fine black shirt hung open at the collar.Sia reached for the bottle, then noticed he was staring blankly at a white wedding invitation on the coffee table. A flicker of quiet satisfaction crossed her eyes before she quickly arranged her face into an expression of distress."Vito, how did you let yourself get like this?""You haven't been to the office in three days. The board has been looking for you.""Get out!" Vito shoved her hand away, sending amber liquid splashing from the bottle and soaking her clothes.Sia froze for a moment, then her eyes welled up with wou

Back in New York, Vito pushed open the front door and was greeted by a room full of darkness. There was no warm lamplight, let alone the familiar figure who would light up with a smile the moment Bianca heard the door open.He tugged at his tie out of habit, shrugged off his coat, and went to the wardrobe to get changed. The space that had once felt crowded was now bare and hollow. The vivid, bespoke gowns that had filled more than half the closet, along with everything else that was hers, had vanished without a trace. She had left without a backward glance. It was as though, in all these five years, she had never once set foot in his world.Vito sank onto the sofa, drained, and buried his face in his hands. He had always believed Bianca could not live without him. No matter how far he strayed, he told himself, she would come running to him the moment he turned around. He had been wrong.Bianca was the proud princess of the Rossi family. The fiercer her love burned, the colder its

At the sound of those words, Vito's tall frame went rigid, the panic in his eyes barely suppressed."Bianca, don't throw away a marriage out of spite! You know I'm the one you love!""I swear you will be the only mistress of the Carlisi family, now and always! Come back to New York with me, right now!"His words drew a laugh from me, and I replied without a trace of courtesy."Since I saw that wall covered in photos of you and Sia, you have been the last person in this world I could ever love."At that, Vito's throat worked with visible effort. He tried to speak, a thread of panic running through his voice."You went up to the attic?"I turned away, unwilling to spare him another glance."These past few days I've come to find that Sicilian’s sun shines far brighter than New York's.""Vito, no one waits forever, except your Sia."Enzo took my hand gently, his fingers lacing through mine.He looked down at the man before him, his gaze cold as steel."Mr. Carlisi, I don't think you quite

"What did you say?"Vito shot to his feet, his chair slamming into the floor-to-ceiling window behind him with a dull thud."I sent it to your phone. See for yourself.""The Moretti family is holding a wedding in Sicily today — Bianca is the bride. Vito, people from all five families were there. This is the biggest news in Sicily, and you really didn't know?"Vito was in no state to answer Lucas's question. He opened the photo Lucas had sent to his phone. It was taken from a distance, but the image was sharp enough.Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of the Monreale Cathedral, falling across Bianca's profile. She was on the arm of the Don of Rossi, a slight smile on her face, walking slowly toward the end of the red carpet. And at the other end stood a young, handsome heir to the Moretti family — Enzo Moretti. How could Bianca be marrying someone else? She had been willing to set aside her pride as the eldest daughter of the Rossi family just for him, keeping their relat
