Chapter 3

Author: Aero
After I hung up, the driver took me home.

That night, Vito did not come back as he had promised.

Late in the evening, my phone buzzed with a notification.

I tapped it open to find that Vito had shared a post of Sia's — a photograph of two shadows leaning closely together, captioned with a line of sentimental prose:

The person who truly cares for you is the one who, no matter how far you walk away, will still be standing there when you turn around.

I had barely tapped the Like button when the post disappeared. It had been deleted.

I smiled and unfollowed him.

That night, without Vito, I slept better than I had in a long time.

When my friends heard I was leaving New York, they were heartbroken, Chloe most of all — she clung to me in tears and begged me not to go.

Since none of us knew when we'd see each other again after this, they suggested we all share one last meal together.

I was hardly going to say no. I booked the VIP suite at a high-end club and treated them all.

As fate would have it, I ran into Sia again on a trip to the restroom.

She seemed far more composed than I was when our eyes met.

"What a coincidence, Bianca. You come here too?"

I gave her a polite smile. I had nothing to say to her.

But she clearly felt otherwise. She shifted to block my path.

"You seem to dislike me, Bianca. Why is that?"

A small, provocative smile played at her lips.

"You've always wondered why Vito takes his whisky with a slice of lemon, haven't you?"

"Because I taught him that."

"Five years by his side — and what does it amount to? Every habit he has, every little thing about him, I put there."

I had always wondered why Vito insisted on adding a slice of lemon to his whisky.

He once told me that it simply tasted better that way.

Now I understood. It was never about taste. He had carried a habit he formed with her and quietly transplanted it onto me.

But Sia wasn't finished. She wore the most guileless smile as she continued.

"So what if you've been with Vito for five years?"

My heart sank.

She watched my face and her smile deepened.

"He never once went public with you, and all I have to do is crook my finger and he'll choose me without hesitation. Bianca, what do you think that means?"

I looked at her quietly for a few seconds.

Maybe what she said was true—but so what?

I was leaving New York anyway.

I curved my lips into a faint smile, my tone as flat as if I were commenting on the weather.

"Well then, I wish you both happiness."

Back in the suite, I downed a shot of tequila before the cold in my hands and feet began to ease.

Chloe was in the middle of coaxing everyone into a game when the heavy door of the suite was kicked open with a crash.

The music died.

A large hand with pronounced knuckles clamped down on my wrist like a vice.

Vito stood before me, radiating a terrifying aura, flanked by several bodyguards in black.

The glass was knocked from my hand and shattered on the floor, shards scattering in every direction.

"Who's the man you brought that hurt Sia!"

I gasped at the pain, shaken by an expression on his face I had never seen before.

"What man? What are you talking about?"

"Let go of her!" Chloe came charging forward in fury, trying to push him back. "You're hurting Bianca!"

In the next instant, his bodyguards moved. They pinned Chloe and the others down onto sofas before anyone could take another step.

The entire suite went dead silent.

Vito's eyes had gone red. They were full of something that looked like disappointment.

"A man cornered Sia in the restroom. He slapped her, nearly tearing her clothes off."

"You were angry that I left you at the hospital for her. Angry that I spent two days looking after her instead of coming home. So you arranged this as revenge. How could you be so cruel?"

My wrist hurt so badly from his grip that tears dropped from my eyes.

Vito's expression softened instantly, and his fingers loosened their hold unconsciously.

But Sia was playing her tricks again.

Her voice came through his phone, weeping, saying she was frightened.

His eyes went cold once more. He ignored my struggling and dragged me out of the suite by force.

"Bianca!" Chloe screamed, fighting against the bodyguard's hold.

I looked back and shook my head at them.

"It's fine. I'll be back in a moment."

Vito hauled me down the corridor to another suite at the far end.

Inside, Sia was curled on the sofa wrapped in Vito's suit jacket, trembling, her face marked with faint red patches of uncertain origin.

When she saw me, she flinched and shrank back, tears streaming down her face.

Vito pushed me in front of her, his expression unreadable.

"Bianca. Whatever happened, apologize to Sia first."

"She's frightened right now."

Three months later. Red Hook Terminal.Vito stood beside the stacked crates, watching his men count the boxes, his expression unreadable. His underboss Marco moved closer and lowered his voice. "Vito, the route was changed at the last minute. The other side confirmed it too. Should be fine."Vito gave a single nod and said nothing.Brooklyn nights were quiet, with only the lap of water in the harbor and the occasional low groan of a passing freighter. The exchange was halfway through when the silence around them turned wrong."Ambush!"Marco was the first to react, drawing his gun and returning fire. Figures poured out of the darkness — only gunshots and footsteps answered, as if they had known the Carlisi family's route all along."Fall back! Head for the docks!"Vito fired as he retreated, a bullet grazing past his ear.Almost there. One more sprint across the open ground and they'd be at the boat.Marco was covering his left flank, a bullet already in his shoulder."Vito, go."The

When Sia pushed open the door, she was startled by the scene before her.Empty bottles littered the floor, and the air was thick with the sharp sting of alcohol and the heavy reek of tobacco. In the middle of the living room carpet, Vito sat slumped, eyes bloodshot, stubble rough on his jaw, one hand still clutching a half-empty bottle of whiskey. His hair, always so meticulously groomed, was a disheveled mess, and his fine black shirt hung open at the collar.Sia reached for the bottle, then noticed he was staring blankly at a white wedding invitation on the coffee table. A flicker of quiet satisfaction crossed her eyes before she quickly arranged her face into an expression of distress."Vito, how did you let yourself get like this?""You haven't been to the office in three days. The board has been looking for you.""Get out!" Vito shoved her hand away, sending amber liquid splashing from the bottle and soaking her clothes.Sia froze for a moment, then her eyes welled up with wou

Back in New York, Vito pushed open the front door and was greeted by a room full of darkness. There was no warm lamplight, let alone the familiar figure who would light up with a smile the moment Bianca heard the door open.He tugged at his tie out of habit, shrugged off his coat, and went to the wardrobe to get changed. The space that had once felt crowded was now bare and hollow. The vivid, bespoke gowns that had filled more than half the closet, along with everything else that was hers, had vanished without a trace. She had left without a backward glance. It was as though, in all these five years, she had never once set foot in his world.Vito sank onto the sofa, drained, and buried his face in his hands. He had always believed Bianca could not live without him. No matter how far he strayed, he told himself, she would come running to him the moment he turned around. He had been wrong.Bianca was the proud princess of the Rossi family. The fiercer her love burned, the colder its

At the sound of those words, Vito's tall frame went rigid, the panic in his eyes barely suppressed."Bianca, don't throw away a marriage out of spite! You know I'm the one you love!""I swear you will be the only mistress of the Carlisi family, now and always! Come back to New York with me, right now!"His words drew a laugh from me, and I replied without a trace of courtesy."Since I saw that wall covered in photos of you and Sia, you have been the last person in this world I could ever love."At that, Vito's throat worked with visible effort. He tried to speak, a thread of panic running through his voice."You went up to the attic?"I turned away, unwilling to spare him another glance."These past few days I've come to find that Sicilian’s sun shines far brighter than New York's.""Vito, no one waits forever, except your Sia."Enzo took my hand gently, his fingers lacing through mine.He looked down at the man before him, his gaze cold as steel."Mr. Carlisi, I don't think you quite

"What did you say?"Vito shot to his feet, his chair slamming into the floor-to-ceiling window behind him with a dull thud."I sent it to your phone. See for yourself.""The Moretti family is holding a wedding in Sicily today — Bianca is the bride. Vito, people from all five families were there. This is the biggest news in Sicily, and you really didn't know?"Vito was in no state to answer Lucas's question. He opened the photo Lucas had sent to his phone. It was taken from a distance, but the image was sharp enough.Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of the Monreale Cathedral, falling across Bianca's profile. She was on the arm of the Don of Rossi, a slight smile on her face, walking slowly toward the end of the red carpet. And at the other end stood a young, handsome heir to the Moretti family — Enzo Moretti. How could Bianca be marrying someone else? She had been willing to set aside her pride as the eldest daughter of the Rossi family just for him, keeping their relat
