Chapter 4

Author: Aero
My knees caught the corner of the sofa. I drew a sharp breath at the pain.

But Sia shook her head, tears still clinging to her lashes.

"Vito, forget it. This isn't Bianca's fault. I was just unlucky to run into someone like that."

Then she let out a low, soft whimper, small and fragile as a kitten, impossible not to pity.

But what had I done wrong?

A quiet laugh escaped me. I looked over at Vito.

"I'm curious, Vito. You've confirmed I hurt Sia. I'm sorry — I won't admit to something without evidence, and I have no interest in playing out this farce with you."

Five years of living side by side. I had thought that in Vito's heart, my character needed no proof.

Yet in front of Sia, five years amounted to nothing.

His favoritism was plain for anyone to see. And I was simply the one who had lost this game.

I didn't go back to the suite. I settled the bill, sent my friends a message to say goodbye, and left.

Back home, I sank into the sofa with overwhelming exhaustion, my mind drifting back to five years ago, to the day Vito was injured.

Members of a rival family shot him while he was protecting me.

I frantically tried to help stop the bleeding, tears uncontrollably streaming down my face.

He reached up to wipe away my tears, his gaze burning intensely, like a flame trapping me within.

"No crying."

I leaned closer to examine his wound, but he suddenly cupped the back of my neck and kissed me with wild, domineering passion.

When our lips parted, he murmured in a low, husky voice by my ear:

"I saved you. Now you're mine."

From that day on, I willingly surrendered, becoming his girlfriend in everything but name.

I had heard of Sia but never seen her.

All I knew was that she had been the one to leave, having quarreled with Vito and chosen to go abroad.

For five years, I believed our love was unbreakable.

When I lingered a moment too long on a rare yellow diamond at a jewelry exhibition, it was waiting on my vanity the next morning.

When I casually said I loved the scent of lavender, he planted an entire field of it for me in the estate.

He once told me I was a gift from Cupid himself.

But the moment Sia returned, he began to doubt me.

None of it matters anymore.

I'm done with him.

I called a housekeeping company and had everything sorted and packed.

Vito didn't have much here. His home was next door, and when we started living together he had never really moved in — just brought over the things he used day to day. Returning them filled no more than a small cardboard box.

I let myself into his house, gathered every photograph of me and every gift I had ever given him, and left his key on the table.

I was almost out of the door when I remembered he still had a key to mine.

I called him. He declined it, again and again.

I didn't try a third time. I called a locksmith instead and had the locks changed on the spot.

The following morning, I boarded a private plane to Sicily with all my luggage.

...

Vito drove home and saw the key on the table, along with a cardboard box neatly packed with his belongings.

He threw on his coat and rushed to the neighboring villa, only to discover he could no longer open the door.

The lock had been changed.

Vito's heart pounded faster and faster as he pulled out his phone to message Bianca.

Meanwhile, at the Cathedral of Monreale, Sicily.

In the dressing room, I wore a custom haute couture wedding gown of pure white lace, with a diamond tiara adorning my head.

Just as I was about to take Papa's arm and walk toward the chapel, the phone screen on the vanity suddenly lit up.

About what happened yesterday, Sia said she won't hold it against you. Go apologize to her properly again.

Be a good girl and come home today. As compensation, I'll take you to pick out that yacht you had your eye on last month.

From: Vito Carlisi

Looking at these messages, I couldn't help but laugh softly.

And here he was, thinking one yacht would be the answer.

Without the slightest hesitation, I blocked Vito's number and tossed my phone back into my bag.

Time ticked by, minute by minute.

Vito stared at his phone screen, still waiting for a message from Bianca that never came.

The feeling of unease grew stronger and stronger. He vaguely sensed a voice telling him:

You are about to lose something precious.

Just then, Lucas's call came through, his tone urgent.

"Vito, did you see the photo I sent you?"

"Bianca is marrying into the Moretti family!"

Three months later. Red Hook Terminal.Vito stood beside the stacked crates, watching his men count the boxes, his expression unreadable. His underboss Marco moved closer and lowered his voice. "Vito, the route was changed at the last minute. The other side confirmed it too. Should be fine."Vito gave a single nod and said nothing.Brooklyn nights were quiet, with only the lap of water in the harbor and the occasional low groan of a passing freighter. The exchange was halfway through when the silence around them turned wrong."Ambush!"Marco was the first to react, drawing his gun and returning fire. Figures poured out of the darkness — only gunshots and footsteps answered, as if they had known the Carlisi family's route all along."Fall back! Head for the docks!"Vito fired as he retreated, a bullet grazing past his ear.Almost there. One more sprint across the open ground and they'd be at the boat.Marco was covering his left flank, a bullet already in his shoulder."Vito, go."The

When Sia pushed open the door, she was startled by the scene before her.Empty bottles littered the floor, and the air was thick with the sharp sting of alcohol and the heavy reek of tobacco. In the middle of the living room carpet, Vito sat slumped, eyes bloodshot, stubble rough on his jaw, one hand still clutching a half-empty bottle of whiskey. His hair, always so meticulously groomed, was a disheveled mess, and his fine black shirt hung open at the collar.Sia reached for the bottle, then noticed he was staring blankly at a white wedding invitation on the coffee table. A flicker of quiet satisfaction crossed her eyes before she quickly arranged her face into an expression of distress."Vito, how did you let yourself get like this?""You haven't been to the office in three days. The board has been looking for you.""Get out!" Vito shoved her hand away, sending amber liquid splashing from the bottle and soaking her clothes.Sia froze for a moment, then her eyes welled up with wou

Back in New York, Vito pushed open the front door and was greeted by a room full of darkness. There was no warm lamplight, let alone the familiar figure who would light up with a smile the moment Bianca heard the door open.He tugged at his tie out of habit, shrugged off his coat, and went to the wardrobe to get changed. The space that had once felt crowded was now bare and hollow. The vivid, bespoke gowns that had filled more than half the closet, along with everything else that was hers, had vanished without a trace. She had left without a backward glance. It was as though, in all these five years, she had never once set foot in his world.Vito sank onto the sofa, drained, and buried his face in his hands. He had always believed Bianca could not live without him. No matter how far he strayed, he told himself, she would come running to him the moment he turned around. He had been wrong.Bianca was the proud princess of the Rossi family. The fiercer her love burned, the colder its

At the sound of those words, Vito's tall frame went rigid, the panic in his eyes barely suppressed."Bianca, don't throw away a marriage out of spite! You know I'm the one you love!""I swear you will be the only mistress of the Carlisi family, now and always! Come back to New York with me, right now!"His words drew a laugh from me, and I replied without a trace of courtesy."Since I saw that wall covered in photos of you and Sia, you have been the last person in this world I could ever love."At that, Vito's throat worked with visible effort. He tried to speak, a thread of panic running through his voice."You went up to the attic?"I turned away, unwilling to spare him another glance."These past few days I've come to find that Sicilian’s sun shines far brighter than New York's.""Vito, no one waits forever, except your Sia."Enzo took my hand gently, his fingers lacing through mine.He looked down at the man before him, his gaze cold as steel."Mr. Carlisi, I don't think you quite

"What did you say?"Vito shot to his feet, his chair slamming into the floor-to-ceiling window behind him with a dull thud."I sent it to your phone. See for yourself.""The Moretti family is holding a wedding in Sicily today — Bianca is the bride. Vito, people from all five families were there. This is the biggest news in Sicily, and you really didn't know?"Vito was in no state to answer Lucas's question. He opened the photo Lucas had sent to his phone. It was taken from a distance, but the image was sharp enough.Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of the Monreale Cathedral, falling across Bianca's profile. She was on the arm of the Don of Rossi, a slight smile on her face, walking slowly toward the end of the red carpet. And at the other end stood a young, handsome heir to the Moretti family — Enzo Moretti. How could Bianca be marrying someone else? She had been willing to set aside her pride as the eldest daughter of the Rossi family just for him, keeping their relat
