I pushed open the door to my room and froze.

Pink curtains. A white vanity. The walls were covered with posters of the celebrities my sister was obsessed with.

I opened the wardrobe and found it filled with her dresses and jackets. Her journals and dance competition trophies lined the bookshelf.

I went to the living room and asked, "Where's my room?"

My mom, Nancy Kerr, was peeling an apple. She didn't even bother to lift her head. "You're a guy. Sooner or later, you'll get a place of your own and build your career. Leaving your room empty would be a waste. Luna uses it every day, so I gave it to her."

"Then where am I supposed to sleep?"

She nodded toward the couch, grabbed an old, pilled blanket, and tossed it to me. "Make do for a couple of days. You won’t be staying long anyway."

Luna poked her head out of her room. "Leon, your pillow is on the top of the cabinet on the balcony. Go get it yourself."

I went out to the balcony, stepped onto a stool, and reached up to pull the pillow down. The stuffing had hardened into clumps, and it was flattened like a pancake, with yellowed edges.

I hugged it to my chest as I sat on the couch, remembering how, when I was ten, I was brought back to the city, and Mom pointed to the spare bedroom and said, "This is your room."

Back then, I thought I finally had a home.

Yet, ten years later, this family had gradually turned me back into a guest.

First, my drawers were emptied. Then my closet was taken over. Then the bookshelf. And finally, there wasn't even a bed left for me.

There were no blackout curtains in the living room. The lights from the building across the street and the streetlights flickered on and off in turns, while the ceiling was glaringly white.

I rolled over. The blanket was too short, so whenever I pulled it up over my shoulders, my ankles were left exposed.

My phone buzzed with a message from my advisor, Bobby Newton. "Leon, we're still one person short for the propulsion systems project at Nettle Base. The conditions are tough. It'll take at least two years, and you'll be completely cut off from the outside world. You're qualified for it. Are you interested?"

I stared at the ceiling for a long time.

I wasn't wondering whether I should go. I was wondering if anyone in this family would even notice if I disappeared for two years.

Probably not. After all, a hotel didn’t search the world for a guest after he checked out.

I replied, "Yes, I'll go."

Standing on the steps, I looked down at Luna. She was thinner than before. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her lips were dry and peeling, like she hadn't slept properly in days.I asked, "How did you find this place?""I looked it up on the school's website. I waited outside for six hours." Luna sniffled, then held up a white plastic bag. "Mom asked me to bring this to you."I didn't take it.Luna opened the bag and pulled out three pairs of slippers—gray, black, and navy. The tags were still on. "She didn't know what color you liked, so she bought all three."I just looked at them.Luna started crying quietly. Her nose was so stuffed up that she could barely speak. "Leon, the room's all cleared out now. I've moved all my things. Mom bought new sheets and a comforter, and even got one of those memory foam pillows. Dad cleared out a whole compartment in the shoe cabinet."Mom goes into your room and just sits there for a long time every day." She wiped her face with

Two years passed.I finally walked out through the base entrance; the desert wind blew straight down the back of my neck. I took a deep breath and turned on my phone. The second the screen lit up, messages came flooding in. My phone kept vibrating for three whole minutes before it finally stopped. There were 147 unread texts in my inbox. Most of them were from Mom.Reading them in order was like watching Mom slowly lose hope. The first one was from the first New Year I'd spent away from home.It read, "Leon, are you coming home for the holiday? I'm making you steak."Then the second message. "Why can't I get through to you? Did you change your number?"Leon, where are you? I'm worried sick about you."I know I was wrong. Please don't take it to heart. Will you come home?"Leon, please. I'm begging you. Just text me back and let me know you're safe. That's all I want to know."The last one was three days ago.She had written, "Leon, I'll be waiting for a message from you eve

The news was broke at 7:30 pm that night. Every channel switched to the same footage, with the same banner announcing that the new manned spacecraft propulsion system had successfully passed its ground test.Dad was watching the evening news. Mom sat beside him, peeling an orange, while Luna looked down at her phone. The footage switched to Nettle Base. A massive test stand stood in the middle of the desert, its exhaust blasting out a blinding white light. The camera panned to the crowd. A row of young people in blue work uniforms stood in front of the launch tower for a group photo. Their faces were all dark and weathered from the sun.At first, Mom hadn't been paying much attention. But the moment she caught sight of the screen out of the corner of her eye, her hand stopped. She spotted me in the second row, third from the left.I'd lost a lot of weight; my cheekbones stuck out now. My skin was two shades darker, and my hair had been shaved short. My jawline was much sharper an

  • No Place for My Slippers or Me   Chapter 7

Luna started searching through the room, going through things one by one.She moved the wardrobe aside and found a faded certificate taped to the wall behind it. The tape had turned yellow and brittle. It read, "Class 3-2, Leon Pratt. Outstanding Student."Growing up, she'd never heard anyone say that I had been a good student. At the bottom of the cabinet on the balcony, she found a rusty metal box. She pried open the lid and found several things, all neatly kept.A small notebook, barely bigger than her palm, with every page packed with notes about money I earned and spent. The amounts were all carefully recorded, down to the smallest amount.A tube of frostbite cream, squeezed nearly flat, with the end rolled up several times.A picture I'd cut from a magazine of a rocket lifting off, a column of white smoke trailing behind it. The corners of the paper were curled, like someone had rubbed them over and over with their fingers.Luna laid everything out on the table, one thin

In April, Luna got her grad school exam results. She hadn't scored well enough.Luna locked herself in her room for two days while Mom paced outside, bringing her food, trying to get her to eat and come out.On the third night, Mom was sitting in the living room when she suddenly got an idea. "Leon! His school is pretty good, right? Maybe he can ask around and see if Luna can transfer into another program."Dad put down his newspaper. "Can you even get ahold of him?" Mom froze. She grabbed her phone and checked. My phone was switched off. I'd blocked her on WhatsApp, and her texts had gone unanswered. She shouted toward the bedroom. "Luna, what's Leon's Discord account?"Luna opened the door, her eyes still swollen. "He probably deleted it a long time ago. He stopped using it when he was a sophomore."Mom panicked. "Then how do we get in touch with him?"Luna thought about it. "Contact his college."Dad found the student services office number. After getting transferred three

Mom stared at the group member list for a long time. She wondered when the four-person group had become a three-person one.She closed the member list and scrolled through the chat history. The last message was the one she'd sent, asking if I was coming home for New Year's. The message bubble sat there alone.I hadn't replied.Mom muttered, "This kid really knows how to hold a grudge." Then she called me."The phone you are calling is currently switched off."She called again. It was still switched off.Mom opened our WhatsApp chat and sent a message. It stayed on one gray check.Realizing that I had blocked her, she stared at her phone for a few seconds before frowning. "Is this really necessary? I just scolded him a bit, and now he's acting like this."Mom put her phone down on the coffee table and left it there.…Luna's boyfriend was coming over for New Year's Eve dinner, so Mom planned a big meal and made a long list of things to cook. She stood in the kitchen, figurin
