Chapter 4

Author: A Bite of Joy
It was the day of my departure.

At 10:00 am, everyone was home. Dad was watching the news in the living room, Mom was preparing Luna's favorite soup in the kitchen, and Luna was in her room, playing on her phone.

I folded the blanket into a neat square and draped it over the arm of the couch. Then I put the old pillow back on top of the cabinet on the balcony, and I washed the glass from the coffee table and put it back in the kitchen.

The living room returned to its clean and empty state, just like before I arrived. No one could tell that I had lived here for a week.

I grabbed my suitcase and walked to the entryway, bending over to tie my shoelace.

Four pairs of slippers sat neatly inside the shoe cabinet: Dad’s, Mom’s, Luna’s, and Luna’s spare pair. It looked exactly as it had on the day I came home.

I picked up the pair of slippers I'd bought and held them in my hand for a couple of seconds. Then I shoved them into the zippered compartment of my suitcase.

The suitcase wheels rolled across the living room floor with a low rumble.

Dad didn't even look up. "Heading out?"

"Yeah, I'm going back to school."

"Oh," he said while changing the channel.

I dragged my suitcase past the kitchen.

Mom had her back to me as she stirred the soup on the stove. She didn't turn toward me. "You're leaving?"

"Yeah."

"Oh. Take the trash out on your way. I won't have time to wipe down the kitchen counter later, so do that too."

I stared at her back. "Can't. I have to catch my ride."

Mom clicked her tongue. "Then close the living room windows before you go. Don't let dust get in."

I kept walking, dragging my suitcase past Luna's room. Or, to be more precise, my old room.

The door was wide open. She was curled up in her chair, scrolling through her phone. She glanced at me and casually waved. "Leon, you're leaving?"

"Yeah."

"Oh." She then went right back to her phone.

I walked to the entryway. My eyes swept over the hooks on the hallway wall one last time. Three keys hung side by side, with blue, red, and black cords. There was no fourth key.

A handwritten note from Mom were stuck under a magnet on the fridge.

"Luna goes back to school on the 10th. Bring beef jerky, yogurt, and new sheets.

"Luna's having a gathering this weekend. Book a private room.

"Pay the heating bill before the end of the month."

There wasn't a single note about me.

I opened the front door. Behind me, the TV was playing the noon news. I could hear the soup bubbling in the kitchen, and laughter from a short video drifted faintly out of Luna's room.

Everything in this house went on as usual.

As though I had never come home at all.

I pulled the door shut, and the lock clicked into place.

No one came after me or asked when I'd be back.

In the elevator, I took out my phone and left the family group chat. A message appeared in the middle of the screen.

"You have left the group chat 'Our Family'".

I held down the power button, and the screen went dark.

As I walked out of the building, the wind hit me in the face.

The world was full of noise. I was the only one dragging a suitcase quietly toward the subway station.

An orange stray cat darted past my feet, rubbed against one of my suitcase wheels, then looked up and meowed at me.

I crouched and rubbed its head. "You're the only one seeing me off."

It narrowed its eyes and brushed its tail against the back of my hand.

I stood up and didn't look back.

The consent form was still in my pocket. Mom's and Dad's signatures were so messy that they looked like two quick scribbles.

I took the guest slippers with me.

Three months later, Mom sent a message in the family group chat. "Leon, are you coming home for New Year's? Your dad told me to ask you."

But there was no reply.

She was shocked when she scrolled through the list of group members.

At some point, the group called "Our Family" had only three people left.

Standing on the steps, I looked down at Luna. She was thinner than before. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her lips were dry and peeling, like she hadn't slept properly in days.I asked, "How did you find this place?""I looked it up on the school's website. I waited outside for six hours." Luna sniffled, then held up a white plastic bag. "Mom asked me to bring this to you."I didn't take it.Luna opened the bag and pulled out three pairs of slippers—gray, black, and navy. The tags were still on. "She didn't know what color you liked, so she bought all three."I just looked at them.Luna started crying quietly. Her nose was so stuffed up that she could barely speak. "Leon, the room's all cleared out now. I've moved all my things. Mom bought new sheets and a comforter, and even got one of those memory foam pillows. Dad cleared out a whole compartment in the shoe cabinet."Mom goes into your room and just sits there for a long time every day." She wiped her face with

Two years passed.I finally walked out through the base entrance; the desert wind blew straight down the back of my neck. I took a deep breath and turned on my phone. The second the screen lit up, messages came flooding in. My phone kept vibrating for three whole minutes before it finally stopped. There were 147 unread texts in my inbox. Most of them were from Mom.Reading them in order was like watching Mom slowly lose hope. The first one was from the first New Year I'd spent away from home.It read, "Leon, are you coming home for the holiday? I'm making you steak."Then the second message. "Why can't I get through to you? Did you change your number?"Leon, where are you? I'm worried sick about you."I know I was wrong. Please don't take it to heart. Will you come home?"Leon, please. I'm begging you. Just text me back and let me know you're safe. That's all I want to know."The last one was three days ago.She had written, "Leon, I'll be waiting for a message from you eve

The news was broke at 7:30 pm that night. Every channel switched to the same footage, with the same banner announcing that the new manned spacecraft propulsion system had successfully passed its ground test.Dad was watching the evening news. Mom sat beside him, peeling an orange, while Luna looked down at her phone. The footage switched to Nettle Base. A massive test stand stood in the middle of the desert, its exhaust blasting out a blinding white light. The camera panned to the crowd. A row of young people in blue work uniforms stood in front of the launch tower for a group photo. Their faces were all dark and weathered from the sun.At first, Mom hadn't been paying much attention. But the moment she caught sight of the screen out of the corner of her eye, her hand stopped. She spotted me in the second row, third from the left.I'd lost a lot of weight; my cheekbones stuck out now. My skin was two shades darker, and my hair had been shaved short. My jawline was much sharper an

Luna started searching through the room, going through things one by one.She moved the wardrobe aside and found a faded certificate taped to the wall behind it. The tape had turned yellow and brittle. It read, "Class 3-2, Leon Pratt. Outstanding Student."Growing up, she'd never heard anyone say that I had been a good student. At the bottom of the cabinet on the balcony, she found a rusty metal box. She pried open the lid and found several things, all neatly kept.A small notebook, barely bigger than her palm, with every page packed with notes about money I earned and spent. The amounts were all carefully recorded, down to the smallest amount.A tube of frostbite cream, squeezed nearly flat, with the end rolled up several times.A picture I'd cut from a magazine of a rocket lifting off, a column of white smoke trailing behind it. The corners of the paper were curled, like someone had rubbed them over and over with their fingers.Luna laid everything out on the table, one thin

In April, Luna got her grad school exam results. She hadn't scored well enough.Luna locked herself in her room for two days while Mom paced outside, bringing her food, trying to get her to eat and come out.On the third night, Mom was sitting in the living room when she suddenly got an idea. "Leon! His school is pretty good, right? Maybe he can ask around and see if Luna can transfer into another program."Dad put down his newspaper. "Can you even get ahold of him?" Mom froze. She grabbed her phone and checked. My phone was switched off. I'd blocked her on WhatsApp, and her texts had gone unanswered. She shouted toward the bedroom. "Luna, what's Leon's Discord account?"Luna opened the door, her eyes still swollen. "He probably deleted it a long time ago. He stopped using it when he was a sophomore."Mom panicked. "Then how do we get in touch with him?"Luna thought about it. "Contact his college."Dad found the student services office number. After getting transferred three

Mom stared at the group member list for a long time. She wondered when the four-person group had become a three-person one.She closed the member list and scrolled through the chat history. The last message was the one she'd sent, asking if I was coming home for New Year's. The message bubble sat there alone.I hadn't replied.Mom muttered, "This kid really knows how to hold a grudge." Then she called me."The phone you are calling is currently switched off."She called again. It was still switched off.Mom opened our WhatsApp chat and sent a message. It stayed on one gray check.Realizing that I had blocked her, she stared at her phone for a few seconds before frowning. "Is this really necessary? I just scolded him a bit, and now he's acting like this."Mom put her phone down on the coffee table and left it there.…Luna's boyfriend was coming over for New Year's Eve dinner, so Mom planned a big meal and made a long list of things to cook. She stood in the kitchen, figurin
