Chapter 1

Author: Pearl Oates
Cecily Monroe awkwardly pulled her hand back. She clutched the takeout bag and muttered under her breath.

"The day you were released, I went to the prison to pick you up. The guard said you'd already left. Did you really not want to see me that badly?"

She was going to stand there and play the victim. It made me scoff.

That day, I stood in the rain like a fool for eight hours.

The officer handling my release had gotten bored waiting alongside me and started scrolling through short reels on his phone. He clicked his tongue and held the screen up to my face, his voice thick with envy.

"Look at this. It's the CEO of Monroe Group with her whole family. Must be nice."

In the video, Cecily was holding Adrian Burke's arm, her smile warm and content. An adorable little girl stood beside them, tilting her chin up at the camera with a playful pout. The backdrop was the largest airport in Stonebridge.

The officer was still marveling.

"Just got back from the Meridian Islands, too. You'd better get your act together, kid, and start working toward the good life. A wife, kids, the whole nine yards."

Cold rain hit my eyes, mixing with something salty and bitter. If not for what happened, I might have had that kind of happiness too.

Before I could respond, a little girl's whiny voice drifted out from inside the room.

"Mommy, is the food here yet? Daddy and I are starving!"

She threw her arms around Cecily's leg and tilted her head to peer at me. The last time I had seen her, she could not stand the sight of me. Now, at 10 years old, Ruby Nash actually smiled and said thank you.

Adrian walked over and casually ruffled Ruby's hair. He was about to close the door when he recognized me.

"Vincent? What are you..." He trailed off, his mocking gaze settling on my clothes, faded from too many washes. "Life in Bayshore must be rough. You should've said something sooner. I could've at least helped you out with some new clothes."

Cecily took Ruby's hand and gently pushed her toward me. "Ruby, say hi to your dad."

Ruby ducked behind Adrian and shouted back. "He's my real daddy! That man is bad!"

Satisfaction flickered through Adrian's eyes. He put on a disapproving look and shook his head. "Vincent, this kid's been spoiled rotten by me. Don't take it personally. Besides, it's been years. Can you really blame her for not recognizing you?"

I had heard worse. Adrian's little performance was not going to get to me.

My silence made him switch tactics. He put on a wounded expression instead.

"Vincent, are you mad that I took your place? Three years ago, you walked out on your wife and daughter without a word. I just stepped in to take care of them..."

I cut him off, my voice flat, "Does that have anything to do with me? You could have another kid together for all I care."

Adrian's expression froze. He looked to Cecily for help. Whatever guilt she had felt toward me curdled into anger the moment he looked wounded.

"Vincent Nash, what happened back then was my doing. I'm the one who put you in prison. If you have a problem, take it up with me."

In the first few months behind bars, I had wished her dead. I could not understand how a woman who swore she loved me could be the one to put me there.

Later, I found myself pathetically hoping she would come see me, just once, even if it was only through the glass, just to hear her say she would wait.

I marked the days on the wall in red tallies until every inch was covered, until my sentence was served.

She never came, not once.

A bitter smile pulled at my lips. "There's no point bringing up the past."

The PR lines at both companies were overwhelmed. Partners sent termination letters one after another, and the banks started calling in their loans. Two corporations that had stood for generations were teetering on the edge of bankruptcy by the end of a single morning.Cecily was shaking. She tried calling Adrian, but all she got was an automated message telling her the number had been disconnected. He had taken what little liquid cash the company had left and disappeared behind her back. She turned to the woman smoking beside her, desperate. "Lydia, what do we do now?"Lydia shot to her feet and grabbed her car keys. "I'm going to Vincent. I'll beg him if I have to. If he gets Catherine to stop, we still have a chance."By the time they made it back to Bayshore, I was at home building blocks with Milo on the living room floor. The doorbell rang over and over, frantic and relentless.Catherine checked the security feed and saw Lydia standing outside, looking like the life had been

I did not care what any of them had to say. I held Milo close and walked out without looking back.Outside the restaurant, the evening breeze carried a faint chill and swept the lingering smell of blood from the air. For reasons I could not quite explain, the stone that had been sitting on my chest for six years felt like it was finally starting to shift."You looked so cool back there." Catherine sidled up to me, grinning like the cat that got the cream.I laughed in spite of myself and ruffled her hair. "You weren't bad yourself. You nearly tore the whole place apart.""They had it coming for messing with you." She muttered it under her breath, then pulled out her phone with a conspiratorial look. "While I was in Verenne this trip, I made a side trip back to the mainland and dug up some interesting things."On the screen were detailed financial statements and transaction records. Catherine scrolled through them and stopped on a massive transfer made six years ago from a private

After I said that, everyone went quiet. The silence held until a tiny, babbling voice broke through it.Milo came running toward me in a miniature suit. "Daddy, did you miss Mommy and me while we were gone?"He stretched out his little arms and charged straight at me. I scooped him up, and before I could say a word, tears were already streaming down his face."Daddy, did somebody hurt you?" His warm little hand found the corner of my mouth. "You're bleeding. Tell me who did it. I'll get them back for you."He puffed out his cheeks in anger and waved his tiny fist. The next second, Ruby came running over too. She reached up and tried to yank Milo off me."Who are you calling 'Daddy'? He's my dad! Get off him!" She grabbed his leg, but Milo clung to me even tighter.I held Milo with one arm and pushed Ruby aside with the other. "What's wrong with you? Milo is my son. He has every right to call me that."Ruby's eyes went red, and the tears spilled over instantly. "No, you're my da

Cecily stared at me in disbelief. "You... actually married someone else?"Her tone was thick with accusation, as though I were the one who had betrayed her. She seemed to have forgotten that the divorce papers had been her idea. She was the one who had signed them and mailed them to me.She had told me that my imprisonment was damaging the Monroe Group's reputation in Stonebridge. The divorce was just a formality, she said, a temporary measure. Once I was out, we would register again.By then, Lydia had already publicly severed ties with me in the papers. Cecily was all I had left. Even if I did not believe her, I had no choice but to sign. After that night, she never contacted me again.I nodded. "Remarrying is perfectly normal, isn't it? You married Adrian the moment our divorce was finalized."Cecily bit her lip and murmured, "It's not the same. What Adrian and I have..."Catherine cut her off with a scornful laugh, "You're right, it's not the same. Vincent and I got together

The woman who had just texted me from the airport was standing right in front of me."You... How did you get here so fast?"Catherine Sterling shot me an annoyed look. "You usually reply within seconds. And this time, I took Milo with me overseas for business. It's been months. I knew you'd be dying to see us."Then I sent you a message and didn't hear back for over ten minutes. I knew right away something was wrong on your end."Catherine gently helped me up from the ground. Her gaze swept over the people around us, and every trace of warmth left her eyes."Who sent you here?" The man at the front swallowed under her stare but held his ground."Lady, don't let this guy's face fool you. Over on the mainland, he killed a patient and did time for it. A man like that doesn't deserve your loyalty."Catherine did not let go of my hand. If anything, her grip tightened. She let out a cold laugh."So what? You think my husband killed someone? You want a life for a life? Only fools woul

  • No Road Home   Chapter 4

The dinner was set at Bayshore Grand.I did not treat it as anything special, so I showed up in the same stain-resistant work clothes I always wore. Adrian, on the other hand, was dressed to impress. It was hard to believe that the man whose family had gone bankrupt overseas, who had been forced to come back with nothing, had clawed his way to the top by stepping on me. He had latched onto both the Monroe and Nash families and never looked back.My gaze landed on the designer watch on his wrist, easily worth over a million. I had seen the same one in Cecily's online shopping cart once. She had never mentioned it, and at the time, I had been foolish enough to think it was an anniversary gift meant for me.Looking back, they had probably been carrying on behind my back even then.Adrian lifted his wrist with a deliberate flourish, pretending to check the time. The overpowering stench of hair gel coming off him nearly made me gag. He mistook my reaction for jealousy and leaned in clo
