Chapter 2

Penulis: Thai Ginger
Deborah rolled her eyes. "If your mother can't handle it, then she doesn't have to come. She's from the sticks. She's used to roughing it. What's so bad about the storage room?"

Ella straightened up and took her mother's side. "Justin, enough! It was only a few nights in the storage room. What's the big deal?"

"Would you make Kevin stay in there?" I shot back.

Ella finally lost her patience and threw what she was holding onto the floor.

"What do you expect me to do? Make Kevin and his daughter sleep in the storage room? You'd really make a three-year-old sleep in there?"

Apparently, making Kevin and his three-year-old sleep there was unthinkable, but putting Mom there after a seven-hour bus ride just to see me was perfectly fine.

Deborah scoffed. "Kevin is family. Of course he can stay with his own sister. But your mother? She's old enough to have her own place instead of staying with her married son. People would talk!"

I dug my nails into my palm.

Funny how Deborah hadn't said any of that when Mom paid for the condo.

We'd agreed from the start to keep a bedroom for Mom so she could move in with us when she got older. Instead, Deborah moved in first and pushed Mom out.

And now Mom couldn't even visit me once in a while without being made to feel unwelcome in the condo she'd paid for.

How was that fair?

I was about to argue when the doorbell suddenly rang.

Deborah hurried to answer it, her face lighting up. "Oh, Kevin! You're here! Come in, come in. Where's Tina? I've missed her so much!"

It was Kevin and his daughter, Tina Shaw.

Tina walked in with a melting lollipop in her hand. Sticky drops hit the floor as she went, leaving a trail behind her.

Deborah glanced down at the mess and smiled. "Look how cute she is."

When Mom came to visit, she wore the nice clothes she saved for holidays and special occasions. Everything she had on was spotless, but they still treated her like she was dirty.

The pecans in the pies came from her own tree. She picked them herself, let them dry, and saved them for Thanksgiving instead of eating them.

The moment Deborah saw the pies, she covered her nose and complained that they smelled weird.

Ella didn't even open the box. She just picked it up and tossed it straight into the trash with a disgusted look.

I closed my eyes for a moment. I couldn't stand watching them act like one big happy family anymore, so I turned and walked into the kitchen.

The pecan pies Mom had made especially for me were still in the trash. I sighed, pulled them out, opened the box, and took a bite of one.

It tasted exactly the way I remembered.

Mom knew how much I loved pecan pie, so she always started getting everything ready early. She'd sort through the pecans, shell them one by one, and save the best ones for my pies.

Then she spent seven hours on a bus with the pies in her lap, just to bring them to me. She'd put so much care into making them, only for Ella to throw them away because she thought they were dirty.

I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes and took another bite. The pie was cold, and the crust had gone a little hard, but I kept eating.

Mom had brought them all this way just for me. I couldn't let them go to waste. When I was done, I put the rest of the pies in the fridge.

As soon as I stepped out of the kitchen, I saw Tina scribbling all over a family photo of me, Mom, and Dad with markers.

"What are you doing?"

I rushed over and snatched the photo out of her hands.

Tina burst into tears. "Uncle Justin's mean!"

  • No Room for Mom   Chapter 10

Deborah didn't approve of Ella's new boyfriend and was always taking passive-aggressive digs at him on social media.Whenever I saw them, I just laughed. Some people were bound to end up exactly where they did.Ella would never learn to respect people, and Deborah would never learn to keep her mouth shut. Their lives were only going to get more miserable. As for me, it wasn't until I got out of that mess that I finally felt like myself again. One day, I ran into Kevin at the grocery store. He was pushing a cart through the spice aisle, looking over the shelves by himself. Tina wasn't with him. When he saw me, he paused, then gave me an awkward smile. "Oh, Justin."I gave him a nod and started pushing my cart away."Justin," he called after me.I turned around.Kevin hesitated for a moment. "I'm sorry. I was wrong back then. I should've spoken up when my mom and Ella were treating you that way, but I didn't. I-I've regretted it ever since."I looked at him and thought back to

Ella took the divorce agreement with trembling hands, her face pale. She stared at it for a long time before looking up at me, her eyes red. "Justin, are you really going to be this heartless?"I said nothing."Does our marriage really mean nothing to you anymore?"I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Our marriage? Did you care about it when you made my mom sleep in the storage room? When you threw the pecan pies she brought me in the trash?"When she ended up curled up at a bus terminal just to save 80 dollars?"Ella had no answer. Finally, I said, "Just sign it. Don't make me think even less of you."The divorce went through faster than I expected.Ella fought me on it for a few days. She had a bunch of relatives try to talk me out of it, then hired a lawyer and tried to go after my assets. But I'd bought the condo outright before we got married. We each kept our own income, and we had no joint assets. She dragged things out for two weeks, but in the end, she didn't g

I called a cab and went straight to the train station. I was going home to spend Thanksgiving with Mom.By the time I got home, it was almost dark. As I stepped into the yard, the warm smell of butter and toasted pecans drifted from the house.Mom was sitting at a little table under the pecan tree, shelling pecans for another batch of pies. She had a bowl of unshelled pecans beside her and another full of the ones she'd already shelled. The moment she saw me, the pecans in her hand dropped into the bowl. She stood up and wiped her hands on her apron."Justin? What are you doing home? I thought you said you had to work."I walked over, sat down on the little stool beside her, and picked up a pecan. "I lied. I didn't have to work. I came home to spend Thanksgiving with you."Mom looked at me, her eyes turning red. "But what about Ella—""Mom."I cut her off and looked her straight in the eye. "Ella and I are done."She froze.I told her everything that had happened, from sellin

Ella couldn't answer. Her face went pale, then flushed.Deborah rushed out of the kitchen and stepped in front of her."Stop twisting everything around! Your mother's from the sticks. So what if we put her in the storage room? Our family was doing her a favor by letting her stay here!"I scoffed. "Your family? Who paid for this condo? Did you put a single dollar toward it?"Deborah's face turned red. "H-how dare you talk to me like that? Ella's your wife. What's yours is hers. This condo is marital property!""Let's see if the law agrees."I was done arguing with her. I went into the bedroom and locked the door.Outside, Deborah started screaming, crying, and throwing things around.I put on my headphones and played an old song.On the third day, Ms. Crosby called. "Mr. Hurst, we have a buyer. They made an all-cash offer of two million dollars and can sign today. Can you come in?""I'll be there."I got changed, grabbed the deed and the rest of the paperwork, and headed out.

I smiled.Ella blinked. "What are you smiling about?""Nothing."I stood up and smoothed my shirt. "Fine. I'll apologize."Her expression softened. "That's more like it. We're family. There's no need to stay mad at each other."Family?I walked out of the bedroom. Deborah was sitting on the couch peeling an orange. When she saw me, she scoffed and looked away.I walked over and stopped in front of her. "Deborah, I'm sorry."The words left a bad taste in my mouth. She didn't even look up. "So you finally realize you were wrong?""Yeah. I shouldn't have gotten angry when you drove my mom out. I shouldn't have been upset when Tina ruined the last family photo I had with my dad. And I definitely shouldn't have been so dramatic about any of it."Deborah stopped peeling the orange. She clearly hadn't expected that.Kevin scoffed. "Justin, is that supposed to be an apology? You sound pretty sarcastic.""Then tell me how I'm supposed to apologize without sounding sarcastic."That

Early the next morning, I took Mom to the bus terminal and saw her off. Before she left, she kept reminding me, "Justin, don't fight with Ella. Just get along with her and live your life."I smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, Mom. I know what I'm doing."As soon as the bus pulled away, my smile faded. I called a cab and went straight to the real estate office.Ms. Crosby, the agent, was a sharp woman in her 40s. We'd been in touch before.I put the deed on her desk. "Ms. Crosby, I want to sell my condo."She looked over the paperwork, and her eyes lit up. "This one? It's in a great area with a good school district. It's worth at least 2.2 million dollars right now.""List it at two million dollars. I only have one condition. I need people coming to see it within three days, and I want it sold as soon as possible."Ms. Crosby looked surprised. "You're in that much of a hurry?""Yes."She saw the look on my face and didn't ask any more questions. She turned to her computer and go
