Chapter 3

Penulis: Thai Ginger
The moment Tina started crying, Deborah rushed over and stepped between us. "Justin, why are you yelling at a child?"

Kevin came over and pulled Tina into his arms, his tone offhand. "Justin, it's just a photo. Do you really need to make such a big deal out of it?"

I stared at the family photo in my hand. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't wipe the marker off. My hands shook with anger.

"Just a photo?"

Kevin rolled his eyes. "Yeah. That's all it is."

I stood up, gripping the photo, my voice shaking uncontrollably. "My dad's gone. This is the last photo we ever took as a family."

The room fell silent, but only for a moment.

Ella came up behind me, glanced at Tina sobbing, then at the photo in my hand, and sighed.

"Enough already. The photo's ruined, and getting angry isn't going to fix it. Tina didn't do it on purpose. We're family. Stuff like this happens when you live together. Do you have to turn everything into a huge fight before you're satisfied?"

Family?

In their eyes, they were the only ones who counted as family. Mom was an outsider, and so was I.

Before I could say anything, my phone buzzed with a message from Mom.

"Justin, I'm already on the bus home. Take care of yourself, okay? And don't fight with Ella because of me."

I stared at the screen, my eyes stinging.

I didn't have it in me to argue with them anymore. All I wanted was to go home, see Mom, and spend Thanksgiving with her.

Deborah was still going on. "You're crying over a photo? Seriously? You're being dramatic!"

"Mom, enough," Ella said.

"Why should I? Ever since his mother got here, it's been one thing after another..."

I didn't say another word. I tucked the photo away, left the condo, and headed for the bus terminal.

Most of the lights in the waiting area were already off, and the last bus was long gone. Mom was probably home by now. I wouldn't be spending Thanksgiving with her after all.

I sighed, then spotted a familiar figure in the corner.

It was Mom.

She was asleep against the wall with a large woven bag at her feet. She held her faded jacket to her chest, a bus ticket still in one hand.

I leaned closer to read the ticket in her hand. It was for the 6:20 am bus to Larkwyn the next morning, and it had cost just 43 dollars.

Then it hit me. The last bus that night had cost 123 dollars. Mom was going to spend the entire night at the bus terminal just to save 80 dollars.

I crouched beside her, my throat tightening painfully.

"Mom..." I whispered.

She jolted awake and froze when she saw me. "Justin? What are you doing here?"

I struggled to keep my voice steady. "I thought you said you were already on the bus."

Her smile faltered.

She looked down and said softly, I... I just wanted to save a little money. Tonight's bus was 123 dollars, but tomorrow morning's is only 43. It's just one night at the terminal, and I'll save 80 dollars. That's worth it, isn't it?"

Mom was willing to spend the night at a bus terminal just to save 80 dollars. Yet she hadn't thought twice about spending 800,000 dollars on a condo for me.

I stayed crouched beside her and really looked at her. Dirt smudged her face, her hair was tousled by the wind, and mud from the flower bed stained her clothes.

Deborah didn't approve of Ella's new boyfriend and was always taking passive-aggressive digs at him on social media.Whenever I saw them, I just laughed. Some people were bound to end up exactly where they did.Ella would never learn to respect people, and Deborah would never learn to keep her mouth shut. Their lives were only going to get more miserable. As for me, it wasn't until I got out of that mess that I finally felt like myself again. One day, I ran into Kevin at the grocery store. He was pushing a cart through the spice aisle, looking over the shelves by himself. Tina wasn't with him. When he saw me, he paused, then gave me an awkward smile. "Oh, Justin."I gave him a nod and started pushing my cart away."Justin," he called after me.I turned around.Kevin hesitated for a moment. "I'm sorry. I was wrong back then. I should've spoken up when my mom and Ella were treating you that way, but I didn't. I-I've regretted it ever since."I looked at him and thought back to

Ella took the divorce agreement with trembling hands, her face pale. She stared at it for a long time before looking up at me, her eyes red. "Justin, are you really going to be this heartless?"I said nothing."Does our marriage really mean nothing to you anymore?"I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Our marriage? Did you care about it when you made my mom sleep in the storage room? When you threw the pecan pies she brought me in the trash?"When she ended up curled up at a bus terminal just to save 80 dollars?"Ella had no answer. Finally, I said, "Just sign it. Don't make me think even less of you."The divorce went through faster than I expected.Ella fought me on it for a few days. She had a bunch of relatives try to talk me out of it, then hired a lawyer and tried to go after my assets. But I'd bought the condo outright before we got married. We each kept our own income, and we had no joint assets. She dragged things out for two weeks, but in the end, she didn't g

I called a cab and went straight to the train station. I was going home to spend Thanksgiving with Mom.By the time I got home, it was almost dark. As I stepped into the yard, the warm smell of butter and toasted pecans drifted from the house.Mom was sitting at a little table under the pecan tree, shelling pecans for another batch of pies. She had a bowl of unshelled pecans beside her and another full of the ones she'd already shelled. The moment she saw me, the pecans in her hand dropped into the bowl. She stood up and wiped her hands on her apron."Justin? What are you doing home? I thought you said you had to work."I walked over, sat down on the little stool beside her, and picked up a pecan. "I lied. I didn't have to work. I came home to spend Thanksgiving with you."Mom looked at me, her eyes turning red. "But what about Ella—""Mom."I cut her off and looked her straight in the eye. "Ella and I are done."She froze.I told her everything that had happened, from sellin

Ella couldn't answer. Her face went pale, then flushed.Deborah rushed out of the kitchen and stepped in front of her."Stop twisting everything around! Your mother's from the sticks. So what if we put her in the storage room? Our family was doing her a favor by letting her stay here!"I scoffed. "Your family? Who paid for this condo? Did you put a single dollar toward it?"Deborah's face turned red. "H-how dare you talk to me like that? Ella's your wife. What's yours is hers. This condo is marital property!""Let's see if the law agrees."I was done arguing with her. I went into the bedroom and locked the door.Outside, Deborah started screaming, crying, and throwing things around.I put on my headphones and played an old song.On the third day, Ms. Crosby called. "Mr. Hurst, we have a buyer. They made an all-cash offer of two million dollars and can sign today. Can you come in?""I'll be there."I got changed, grabbed the deed and the rest of the paperwork, and headed out.

I smiled.Ella blinked. "What are you smiling about?""Nothing."I stood up and smoothed my shirt. "Fine. I'll apologize."Her expression softened. "That's more like it. We're family. There's no need to stay mad at each other."Family?I walked out of the bedroom. Deborah was sitting on the couch peeling an orange. When she saw me, she scoffed and looked away.I walked over and stopped in front of her. "Deborah, I'm sorry."The words left a bad taste in my mouth. She didn't even look up. "So you finally realize you were wrong?""Yeah. I shouldn't have gotten angry when you drove my mom out. I shouldn't have been upset when Tina ruined the last family photo I had with my dad. And I definitely shouldn't have been so dramatic about any of it."Deborah stopped peeling the orange. She clearly hadn't expected that.Kevin scoffed. "Justin, is that supposed to be an apology? You sound pretty sarcastic.""Then tell me how I'm supposed to apologize without sounding sarcastic."That

Early the next morning, I took Mom to the bus terminal and saw her off. Before she left, she kept reminding me, "Justin, don't fight with Ella. Just get along with her and live your life."I smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, Mom. I know what I'm doing."As soon as the bus pulled away, my smile faded. I called a cab and went straight to the real estate office.Ms. Crosby, the agent, was a sharp woman in her 40s. We'd been in touch before.I put the deed on her desk. "Ms. Crosby, I want to sell my condo."She looked over the paperwork, and her eyes lit up. "This one? It's in a great area with a good school district. It's worth at least 2.2 million dollars right now.""List it at two million dollars. I only have one condition. I need people coming to see it within three days, and I want it sold as soon as possible."Ms. Crosby looked surprised. "You're in that much of a hurry?""Yes."She saw the look on my face and didn't ask any more questions. She turned to her computer and go
