Chapter 3

作者: Winter
After the call ended, I calmly closed my laptop.

“Nothing.”

“I was just talking to my professor about divorce.”

Olivia's expression changed instantly.

She walked straight over to me.

“What divorce?”

“You're divorcing me?”

I took a step back, my voice calm.

“No.My professor was asking for my opinion on a divorce case.”

Hearing that, Olivia visibly relaxed.

She didn't ask anything else. Instead, she handed me the paper bag in her hand.

“This is for you.”

The logo on the bag belonged to a whiskey shop I loved.

Back in college, whenever we argued, Olivia used to bring me whiskey for apology.

She remembered exactly how I took it.

At the time, I thought that was what love looked like.

Thinking about it, my expression softened without me realizing it.

I took the bag.

“You still remember…”

I stopped halfway.

“What is this?”

I stared at what was inside, and something in my chest sank.

It wasn't whiskey.

It was a men's suit.

More precisely, the suit Ethan had been wearing tonight.

It still carried a faint trace of his cologne and the smell of alcohol.

I looked up at Olivia.

For once, she looked slightly embarrassed.

“Ethan's suit got dirty.”

“I remembered how you used to handle these things for me, so I brought it home.”

“Take it to the dry cleaner tomorrow.”

She said it so naturally.

I stared at her for a few seconds.

Then I held the bag out to her.

“Do it yourself.”

Olivia froze.

“What?”

“I said, do it yourself.”

Her expression changed.

“You're really going to make a big deal out of this?”

I didn't answer.

She seemed to remember something and added,

“If it bothers you, I'll use another Second Chance.”

“We have plenty left.”

“Don't make a big deal out of something this small.”

I looked at her.

For a moment, I almost wanted to tell her.

Olivia.

There aren't that many left.

There were only two Second Chances remaining.

But there was no point anymore.

I put the suit back into her hands.

“Then use one.”

I turned and walked toward the bedroom.

In the past, I'd handled every little thing around the house just to make her life easier.

Dry cleaning.

Bills.

Schedules.

Even the problems at work that no one else wanted to touch, I'd take care of them for her.

After all, I was her husband.

And the person she trusted most with anything involving the law.

But somewhere along the way, she'd grown used to treating everything I did as something she was entitled to.

This time, I wasn't going to fix it for her.

I wasn't going to clean up after Ethan.

I wasn't going to make excuses for her.

And I certainly wasn't going to wait around for her to change her mind.

I was simply tired.

When I returned to the bedroom, Olivia was still standing in the living room, holding Ethan's suit.

She looked surprised.

“That's it?”

“You're not going to take care of it?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Then I opened my suitcase and started packing my things.

Olivia watched me for a moment, then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

It was Ethan.

Without the slightest hesitation, she turned and walked out onto

the balcony.

I hadn't intended to listen.

But her voice still drifted back to me.

“What happened?”

I couldn't hear what Ethan said.

Olivia quickly laughed.

“Of course I remember.”

“Stay there. I'll keep you company.”

My footsteps stopped.

Those words.

She used to say the same thing to me.

Back when I was working late on major deals, Olivia would stay up with me until two or three in the morning.

She'd sit beside me, bring me coffee, and wait until I finished.

She never complained.

But now, she was staying up late for another man.

The words were the same.

Only the person beside her had changed.

Ethan said something else.

Olivia laughed as she reassured him.

“Don't worry. Your suit is already at the dry cleaner. Ryan took care of it.”

“Don't worry. You'll have it tomorrow.”

“Yeah. He's used to handling things like this.”

My fingers went still.

So not every act of kindness goes unappreciated.

Sometimes, it's simply a matter of who you choose to give it to.

And I was no longer that person.

I didn't listen any longer.

I turned and went back into the bedroom.

Ten minutes later, Olivia knocked on the door.

“Ryan.”

“There are still some things at the office I need to deal with. I have to go.”

“Get some sleep.”

I lay on the bed without turning around.

“Okay.”

She walked toward the door.

Her hand was already on the doorknob.

I suddenly spoke.

“Olivia.”

She stopped.

“What is it?”

I looked at her back and remained silent for several seconds.

Then I asked,

“If you don't come home tonight, can I use one of our Second Chances?”

Olivia's entire body stiffened.

Slowly, she turned around.

For the first time that night, she truly looked at me.

And for the first time, I realized something with absolute clarity.

I had nothing left to lose.

  • No Second Chances Left   Chapter 9

For seven straight days, Olivia showed up outside the law firm, rain or shine.Every morning, she stood outside the lobby waiting for me.She never caused a scene. She never begged me in front of anyone. She simply stood there, watching me with exhaustion and regret written all over her face. She didn't have to say a word.Everyone at the firm could tell that the woman waiting outside was my wife.Sophia noticed her, too.Every time she passed by, she would hand Olivia a freshly printed copy of the divorce papers.Neither woman said much. They simply stared at each other, as if engaged in a silent battle. My professor didn't want any of this affecting my work, so he arranged a firm retreat.During those few days, I did things I'd once planned to do with Olivia but had never found the time for.Skiing.Hiking.Skydiving.And even traveling north to see the Northern Lights. For years, I'd built my entire life around Olivia. Now I finally had time to build one around myself. When I return

POV Ryan Ten hours later, I arrived safely in Paris. The moment I stepped out of the airport, my former professor was already there with several colleagues from the firm.“Ryan, I’m glad you decided to come back.”This was my third time in Paris. The first two had been for Carter Holdings’ international business. Every time, I had to fly straight back to New York the same day a deal was signed. This time was different. There was no board waiting for me.No clients. And no wife waiting for me to clean up the messes she had created. From now on, I only had to answer to myself. And Olivia would never have imagined that I would end up here.Seeing me return brought a wave of emotion to my former professor.Back in college, I had been one of his most promising students, and one of the youngest M&A talents he had ever taught.Years ago, he had mapped out a path for me to make partner at one of the country's top law firms. He had even personally invited me to join the firm's European team.B

After the call ended, I stayed in my office until the end of the workday.I didn’t leave.Eventually, I pushed open the door to Ryan’s office.I sat down in the chair where he used to work and stared at the wedding photo on his desk.My thoughts drifted uncontrollably back to nine years ago. That was when Ryan and I first met at a college debate tournament. He was confident and sharp back then. His logic was airtight, and within a few sentences, he could leave an opponent with nothing to say.Unsurprisingly, I became one of his defeated opponents. But unlike everyone else, I saw something different in him.Whenever people talked about Ryan after the debate, they described him as intimidating, razor-sharp, and impossible to beat.I saw him as rational, intelligent, and decisive. After that, I was the one who pursued him.It took us two years to go from strangers to a couple.Another two years to go from dating to marriage.Even now, I still remembered exactly what he looked like when he

I had barely arrived at the office when Ethan Blake followed me inside.“Olivia, this is yesterday’s contract.”He placed the file on my desk and casually walked over, resting one hand on my shoulder.Normally, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it.But today, it suddenly made me uncomfortable.I straightened in my chair and opened the file. I had barely read a page before my brows drew together.Even the most basic clauses were full of holes, let alone the liability provisions that could leave Carter Holdings exposed to millions of dollars in losses. It was a complete mess.Ryan used to review every major contract at least three times himself. He was one of the best M&A attorneys in New York, and Carter Holdings’ most trusted legal advisor. After we got married, he gave up his shot at partnership at a top law firm and joined my company as General Counsel, shielding me from countless legal and business risks. But now, I slammed the file shut.“Who drafted this?”Ethan’s face went pale

  • No Second Chances Left   Chapter 5

Olivia POVI stared at the message on my phone.【Let's get a divorce.】For several seconds, I couldn't move.I immediately texted him.【Stop messing around. There’s no way we could have used up all our Second Chances that quickly.】【Don't you like the gift I got you? I'll buy you something else.】【Ryan, answer the phone. We need to talk.】No reply.I called him again and again.By the thirty-ninth call, there was still nothing but the cold automated message. My heart finally sank.No.This couldn't be happening.Ryan had never done this before.Even when he was angry, he would still wait for me to come home. But tonight, he had been too calm. Not the kind of calm that came from being angry. The kind that came after a decision had already been made.I grabbed my coat.Ethan Blake wrapped his arms around me from behind, his voice soft and pleading.“Olivia, you promised you'd spend the whole night with me.”I pulled his hands away.“I have something to take care of.”Then I left the hote

  • No Second Chances Left   Chapter 4

“Okay.”Olivia smiled at me, looking completely at ease.“Don't worry. I'll be home before midnight.”“We won't need to use your Second Chance tonight.”Looking at her face, which somehow still looked almost exactly like it had five years ago, I pushed down the emotions rising inside me and nodded.“Okay. I'll wait for you.”Three hours remained until midnight, Olivia texted me.【Just got to the office. I'll be home soon.】A few minutes later, Olivia's assistant posted an Instagram Story. It was a photo of an empty office. The caption read:Still working. Everyone else is gone. Two hours remained until midnight. While clearing out my photo library, I suddenly came across an old picture.Olivia was holding a ring out to me.It was the third time she'd proposed.I stared at the photo for a long time before finally posting an Instagram Story of my own.【Five years already.】Olivia replied almost immediately.【More than five.】Then she sent me another photo.New York's skyline glittered be
