Chapter 1

That very night, the group chat blew up.

Patrick Hoffman, my now-former boss and the chairman of United Enterprise, messaged me in private.

"Heath Carter! Have you lost your mind? What the heck kind of nonsense are you spouting? Delete that message right this instant!"

"It's too late for me to delete it, but why are you so panicked, Mr. Carter? I'm just using you as a case study. Why are you getting so worked up?"

After responding to Patrick, I posted my résumé in the group chat.

"I'm in urgent need of employment and able to start anytime. If you've got any financial problems, I'm available for consultation. I've got insider info on well-known companies, and my rates are fair. You can trust that there's no deception here!"

People in the group started chiming in.

"Heath, did your account get hacked?"

"You'll get thrown in jail if you leak corporate secrets!"

That response made me scoff, and I responded with, "Who said I'm leaking anything? I'm just sharing a case study of mine. That's well within my rights as a job seeker. I can't even put food on the table at home, and my wife's sick. Why else do you think I'm here offering my services?"

Someone who knew about what had happened specifically mentioned Patrick in the group chat. "What's going on, Mr. Hoffman? Mr. Carter used to be your right-hand man. After all this, you're not going to do anything?"

It was a while before Patrick finally replied, "The so-called case study is nothing but fabricated lies! Heath Carter committed a grievous mistake that caused massive losses to the company and was dismissed as a result. Keep your eyes open, everyone. Don't get fooled by him!"

Upon seeing his claims, I felt the burst of anger rushing to my head. Patrick could go to hell for all I cared. He was the one who spent 50 million dollars on an investment that led to a loss of over a billion dollars. Yet here he was, trying to smear my reputation.

I wasn't going to take that lying down.

Without saying a word, I uploaded a financial report detailing the costs incurred in the development of a game for another company.

Immediately, a business owner by the name of Donovan Fowler sent me a private message.

"Are those numbers real, Heath? It only took a few million dollars? You're not pulling one over me, right?"

"I can guarantee the numbers are real," I replied.

"What the hell? Patrick Hoffman tricked me into investing over ten million dollars in that project, claiming that money was tight. And he only gave me two million dollars in dividends once the project was completed! He played me for a fool!

"I knew something was fishy. So many people made accounts for the game, but we never got to see the detailed financial breakdown. Patrick kept claiming that the numbers were confidential. Well, seems to me that he took a fat cut for himself and only left a few crumbs for the rest of us! That damned bastard!"

Donovan was livid. Even though we were texting, I could imagine his reddened cheeks puffing with anger.

But I didn't respond. I simply left him hanging to keep him waiting. Soon enough, he grew impatient.

"Heath, can you help me take him down? That bastard has gone off on a snow mountain climbing trip. He gave me some bullshit about conquering new heights, leaving me here to work my butt off holding things together."

Cocking my brows, I glanced into the hospital room where my wife, Georgia Lowe, was lying. Then, I replied, "Why should I help you? How is it worth my while?"

As soon as I said that, Donovan made a transfer of 100 thousand dollars to my bank account. "Let's meet in person to discuss this when we can, Heath. Use the money to cover any emergencies you have first."

While I didn't respond, I accepted the money.

After I'd paid off Georgia's hospital bills, I finally had the time to process everything. With my laptop in hand, I drove into the basement parking lot of the company building.

The elevators here gave me direct access to the company's main entrance. Before I left the company after getting fired, I'd decided to leave a little something as an insurance policy for myself. There was something that only I could make happen.

Half an hour later, I went back to the car with my laptop and immediately texted Patrick, "Let the games begin, Patrick. Starting from this moment, I'll be dropping a bomb every eight hours. Prepare yourself."

Patrick didn't take me seriously. He called me up and said scornfully, "Don't even try to threaten me, Heath. You have no evidence at all. The only thing you can do is go around running your mouth.

"Go on, then. I dare you to expose everything! You'd go to prison for cooking the books, too!"

I chuckled. "Who said I'd be going to prison? You forced me to do it. Besides, who said I was going to use the falsified accounts to threaten you? Need I remind you of all the dirt there is to find on you, Patrick?

"It'll only take three days—I'll be releasing what I've got every eight hours. You can count on me to keep my word."

After ending the call, I went on X and exposed Patrick for having taken advantage of a female employee in the past, demanding sexual favors from her.

This was just the start, of course. After all, a sex scandal wouldn't amount to much when I was trying to take down the chairman of a company.

The shareholders were having a hard time accepting the situation, but that had nothing to do with me anymore. All I wanted was to finally get some rest. After leaving the company, I got a call from Georgia's doctor, informing me she was ready to be discharged. I let out a long breath of relief and bought a bouquet of flowers before heading to the hospital to pick her up.She'd been through so much during this period. When she saw me, she mustered a smile and said, "It must've been hard on you.""Not at all. All that matters to me is to see you well again," I said. We'd been together since we were young. Never once did I ever think I'd be pushed to the edge like that. I'd almost failed to save her. Now that I'd finally managed to bring her back from the hospital, I didn't want to even entertain the thought of losing her again. While I was busy bringing Georgia home from the hospital, Patrick had caved under the pressure and given a full confession to the authorities. Although the

The shareholders lunged forward to punch Patrick in the face. Scared witless, he tried to stop them from coming after him, but by the time the police arrived, they'd already pinned him to the floor and given him a good beating.I simply watched with a smile and said nothing. But when he saw my reaction, he struggled desperately, pointing at me as he shouted, "It's all because of you, Heath! You're trying to ruin me, but don't you know that we're in this together? If I go down, you're not walking away unscathed either!"I shrugged. "I never expected to walk away unscathed, but at least I'm capable of showing gratitude. That's something you'll never understand."I'm not here to negotiate. I'm here to make it clear to everyone that you've committed a grave wrongdoing. I formally move to remove you from your position as chairman and hand full authority over the company to a professional business manager!"All in favor, raise your hands!"I raised mine first. Seeing that, the others fo

The previous exposés were simply a way for me to back him into a corner. That wasn't the case now. This time, I was going to pull the rug out from under him and kick him from his seat of power in the company.I was going to let him find out who truly called the shots.Seeing me like this, Patrick finally understood that everything I'd done had been purely out of vengeance. He softened his tone, saying, "Why must you do this, Heath? We've worked together for so many years now. Don't you think you're being a bit too heartless?"I raised a hand to cut him off before glancing at my watch. "You've got 28 minutes left. Don't waste them."Clenching his jaw, he had no choice but to do as I said. After 30 minutes, all of the shareholders had arrived. Patrick and his supporters sat across the table from me.As I sat there in silence with a smile on my face, one of them spoke up, "What kind of stunt are you trying to pull, Heath? You're just the former head of finance that the company has

Patrick immediately flew off the handle. "That's illegal!""So, sue me. I'm more than happy to accept any punishment the court decides to give me—but it won't stop me from exposing everything that needs to be exposed," I calmly replied. His face turned ashen. He knew I was fully capable of doing just that. I would definitely have him sent to prison even before he could take me to court. After a long silence, he took a deep breath and said, "Why go this far? We worked side by side for seven years. Those were the best years of my life. I've been thinking about how things would've turned out for us if we didn't end up on opposite sides.""I already know what would've happened," I commented. "You would've squeezed me dry and exploited every single ounce of me. And once I was no longer of any use to you, you'd kick me out of the company."A flicker of awkwardness crossed his face. I patted his shoulder and said, "Enough of that. Now that I've received the compensation I'm due, if there

Six months ago, United Enterprise won the bid for a project—only to end up cutting every corner possible, and then some. The project had been valued at two billion dollars, but in reality, the company only spent 300 million dollars on the actual construction work. The rebar used didn't meet the industry's sizing standards. The concrete work done across the entire construction had been subpar. And in order to meet the rushed deadlines, the workers did a sloppy job.United Enterprise had turned a blind eye to all of these things. Even the regulatory authority had been bribed. My exposé not only included photos from the construction site but high-definition videos as well.Everyone was floored to see the evidence I posted. The moment Patrick saw the news, his hands started shaking. He didn't know what to do. Not for a minute did he ever think that I would be aware of this. When this information first came out, he'd suppressed it immediately. He and two other board members were the

When Patrick came to find me, I had just walked out of the doctor's office. The doctor said Georgia's condition was stable and improving steadily. She could soon be discharged from the hospital.I was relieved to hear that. And as soon as I left the doctor's office, I spotted Patrick. With a smile that didn't reach his eyes, he gave me a debit card."There's 500 thousand dollars on there, so just stop it now. Why must you insist on making things ugly?" he said. "What can you gain from pushing me into a corner?"I shoved the card back into his hand."You made me take the fall for you and ruined my reputation. You left me drowning in mortgage payments, barely making ends meet. You wouldn't even give me the money I needed to save my wife! So don't blame me for not showing any courtesy," I growled."Everything I've done has solely been to give myself a way to survive. You can't buy off the years I've spent working for you with just 500 thousand dollars, Patrick. Ten million dollars,
