Chapter 2

Author: Leon Moore
After I returned home, Dad looked behind me, and his expression darkened.

"Weren't you traveling with Mark? Where is he?"

I forced a smile.

"I suddenly missed you, so I came back. He can travel on his own."

Dad's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained serious.

"Jason, Mark is still the son of our housekeeper.

"The reason the Gunther family supported him all the way through college was because we hoped he could become like family and protect you.

"If he can't do that, I don't mind cutting off his allowance!"

The smile disappeared from my face. My heart felt like it was being stabbed.

Mark was seven years old when Alice Jefferson brought him into the Gunther family.

I still remembered his scrawny figure when he stood there.

When I learned that his biological father abused him and that he sometimes couldn't even get a proper meal for days, as an only child, I treated him like my own brother.

He had been there throughout almost my entire life.

Although I knew Cindy's feelings toward me were slowly changing, up until then, I still couldn't believe he would betray me.

I avoided Dad's worried gaze and quickly put down my backpack to hide my expression.

"Alright, alright. I'm starving!"

Dad's voice came from behind me.

"Tomorrow, you'll meet the girl from the Spencer family.

"If everything goes well, we can start preparing for the wedding."

I froze for a moment. After a long silence, I answered, "Okay."

I arranged to meet Katie Spencer at a stylish cafe.

I scrolled through my phone while waiting absentmindedly.

Mark kept updating his social media posts.

They went to the Erendal Sea to feed seagulls as well as Chrisandor Cathedral to pray for good luck and make wishes. They were planning to visit Mount Canderria next.

It was the exact itinerary I had spent a month preparing.

I had looked forward to this trip, but in the end, I was the only one left behind.

While my heart sank, Mark suddenly called me on video.

He excitedly showed me the beautiful scenery in Dellaros and kept praising Cindy.

"Jason, I'm testing her for you. So far, she's pretty good.

"She knows to help me when I'm tired, hands me cold drinks whenever I frown, and even holds an umbrella for me so I don't get sunburned–"

The forced smile disappeared from my face. My gaze was fixed on his neck.

It hurt me to look at those faint red marks.

Maybe he noticed something was wrong with my expression. He awkwardly pulled up his collar.

"It's a little windy today!"

Before he could continue speaking, someone ran over and hugged him from behind.

"I told you not to sleep with the air conditioner blasting while you were naked last night. Of course you caught a cold.

"Tonight, you're not allowed to ask for that again–"

Mark immediately looked panicked. The video was cut off.

But I still recognized that voice.

It was Cindy's.

My mind went completely blank. My hand froze. I didn't know what to do.

I desperately called Cindy, but she didn't answer.

Only after my entire body was drenched in cold sweat did I slowly come back to my senses.

Cindy then called me back on video.

Her eyes were full of affection. She looked completely normal.

"I was focused on picking out your gift. My phone was in my pocket, so I didn't hear it.

"Did you miss me? We'll be back in a few days."

But through the video, I saw Mark hiding in the distance.

The scarf wrapped around his neck was the Valentine's Day gift I had personally picked out with him for Cindy.

It felt like someone had punched me in the chest. My face turned pale, and I struggled to breathe.

I hurriedly ended the video call.

A glass of warm water was placed in front of me.

It was Katie.

I forced a smile that looked worse than crying.

"It's just a marriage for business. There's nothing to talk about.

"If you don't mind, let's start preparing for the wedding."

"Jason, I promised you a long time ago that I would take you on a trip for two."As soon as I found out you came to Dellaros alone, I followed you here."You're here. Does that mean you still haven't let go of me?"Seeing the hope in her eyes, I suddenly remembered.Back in college, although I was the heir of the Gunther family, I had never spent money recklessly.Sometimes, I even worked part-time jobs. There was a sense of accomplishment in spending money I had earned myself. We once promised each other that we would take a romantic trip to Dellaros together. When she suggested adding Mark to the itinerary, I didn't refuse.Looking back now, that was probably her attempt to have the best of both worlds.Only then did I realize where the strange discomfort I had been feeling these past few days came from.I snorted."You're thinking too much. I just didn't want all the planning I did to go to waste."Besides, we have nothing to do with each other anymore. If you keep foll

"Shut up!"Cindy's face turned red. She slapped Mark hard across the face."It's all because of you, you jerk."You're just a housekeeper's son, but you dressed and lived even better than Jason. That's why I believed you!"I was only toying with you. The person I loved from the very beginning was always Jason."Looking at the expensive clothes Mark was wearing, I laughed.Ever since we were kids, I had treated him like my own brother.I was afraid he would feel inferior, so I always gave him the best things. In the end, those things became the tools he used to betray me.Dad's brows furrowed intensely. His cold gaze shifted between the two of them."One was my son's best friend, someone my son treated sincerely. The other was my son's girlfriend, someone my son humbly asked me to arrange a job for."You two actually spent four years humiliating my son?"He turned to the butler beside him."Alice failed to raise her son properly. Recover every expense the Gunther family spe

The moment Mark realized I had never treated him this coldly before, his strength seemed to disappear. He collapsed weakly onto the floor.Cindy also understood everything at that moment. She looked at Mark in disbelief and wouldn't stop muttering."How could you lie to me?"You actually lied to me–"She suddenly turned to face me and hurriedly explained."Jason, he tricked me."He said that as long as I stayed with him, he would arrange an internship at Gunther Group for me. You know people like us without a powerful background basically have no job prospects after graduation. I just wanted to get a good start so I could give you a better future–"Looking at how humble and desperate she was now, I wonder where the confident and untouchable woman who ruled the campus had gone.I remembered the first time I met her. Her eyes had shone so brightly."How can a silly guy like you exist? You're interesting."Hi, I'm Cindy, the student council president."My heart instantly raced

After I was hospitalized, Katie informed Dad, who was away negotiating a business deal. She carefully applied an ointment to my wounds."Being wrong about someone for four years wasn't your fault."The greatest tragedy is realizing who someone truly is only after getting married to them!"Later, she went out and bought breakfast. There was meat and vegetables. It was balanced and nutritious."I just bought whatever looked good. Eat something!"It turned out breakfast was never just sandwiches and oatmeal.I turned my face away and sniffed hard."Thank you!"With Katie's careful care, I recovered quickly. When I stepped back into the house, I saw Alice and the others kneeling in a terrified manner. At the very front were Mark and Cindy.Dad sat in the main seat. He gestured for a newly hired maid to help me sit beside him."Jason, I know you've always been kind-hearted."But now that you've graduated and are about to join Gunther Group, I'll teach you how to manage a hous

Katie ran over and kicked Mark to the ground. My slowly collapsing body fell into a broad, warm embrace. After parting ways yesterday, I didn't think she was interested in me.I never expected Katie would actually come looking for me today.Hearing the commotion, Cindy walked over quickly.Seeing me in another woman's arms, fury flashed in her eyes."Jason, was this why you blocked us?"Were you hoping I wouldn't be able to get your ticket so you could come back and sneak around with another woman?"Now what right do you have to accuse me and Mark?"My swollen face made it impossible for me to speak, but I knew clearly that she didn't love me.It was nothing but her darned possessiveness.Mark fell to the ground. His arm was scraped and bleeding. He forced himself to stand, but the panic in his heart was far greater than the pain."Jason, if you had fallen for someone else, why didn't you tell us sooner?"Are you saying your four years with Cindy meant nothing?"How coul

The moment I called for his mother, Mark panicked.Alice Jefferson walked out. Her confused gaze shifted between the two of us before finally stopping on me.She immediately stepped forward respectfully.I looked at Cindy and sneered."Explain to her who the real heir of the Gunther family is, won't you?"Alice answered without hesitation."Of course it's you."Mark suddenly raised his voice and interrupted her. With a thud, he dropped to his knees in front of me."We grew up together. Why do we have to make things this ugly?"Cindy fell in love with me. Is that really my fault?"I'm kneeling in front of you now. Isn't that enough?"Alice's brows furrowed. She clenched her fists. Before I could react, she forcefully pinned me to the ground."You ungrateful child! How dare you make the heir kneel!"I stared at her in disbelief, but the sharp pain from my knees reminded me this wasn't a nightmare.Mark secretly sighed in relief.Cindy couldn't help but laugh."Jason, don
