Chapter 8

Author: Aero
A sharp crack rang out.

Mom's phone hit the floor.

The screen split open.

I looked at that image, and thought with quiet sorrow:

the only photograph of me on Mom's phone

I'm sorry, Dorian.

I never meant for you to be the one to face all of this.

Dad walked over.

He picked up the phone Mom had dropped.

One glance was all it took. He pressed the screen dark and turned away.

He looked at Mom, whose eyes had lost all focus.

But I remembered clearly that my sister had been born in the daytime. If this was not about my sister, then Selene was the name Mom had always meant to give me.Selene.I turned the name over once in the quiet of my heart. And felt something in my soul go light."Selene. I'm sorry."Mom closed her eyes, gently. The next instant, everything around me shifted. When I came back to myself, I was standing in a hospital room.A woman heavy with child held her belly, her face drawn tight with pain."Why are the contractions starting now? Rose was born in the daytime. The timing is wrong.""If this one comes at night, can she still be Rose?"I looked at her face, and understood all at once. This was the day I was born, eighteen years ago. This woman was my Mom.Dad stood beside her, trying to calm her:"Don't think about all that right now. Getting the pup out safely is what matters. I'll go find a healer."Mom was wheeled into the delivery room soon after. The birth went smoothly. The healer

After collapsing at the hospital that day, Mom's mind came apart completely.Dad had her admitted to a healing house. She lay in her patient's gown, thin as paper against the bed.Her hair had gone entirely white. When my sister passed, my parents had still been in their prime. Now they too had grown old.As a child, looking at the photographs around the house of them young and full of life, standing beside my sister, I had carried a quiet, shameful envy. Why had I never known my parents when they were young?By the time I was old enough to stand on my own, they were already very, very old.For a long stretch of years that fear had wrapped itself around me, the dread of losing them to death.I had not expected to be the one to go first. At the healing house, Mom kept crying out that she wanted her daughter.Dad had no other answer for it. He began bringing Rose's things over, piece by piece.First the photographs, until they covered every wall. Then the bedsheets from Rose's room, spre

It isn't real.""Rose can't be gone. She's too lovely. How could she get a terminal illness?"Mom was having an episode. At the very moment she confirmed my death, she turned me into my sister one last time. From birth to death, I had never once been allowed to simply be myself.Dad wrenched her hands away."This is Rosalie!""This is Rosalie, do you hear me? Look at her properly!""She is dead. Are you satisfied now? Does this fee

The entire hall fell into dead silence.Dad and Mom stood frozen where they were, like statues.Edmund's eyes turned red. His voice came out hoarse."How did Rosalie die so suddenly.""She was still smiling and talking to me at the banquet just last night."Dad and Mom still did not move.Edmund could hold himself together no longer. He turned and ran out.A long time passed before Mom seemed to slowly come back to herself."How dare she die."She sank to the floor, one inch at a time."She lied about having some terminal illness, and when we didn't believe her, she staged a fake death to steal everyone's attention."Dad's mouth fell open, but no sound came out.He simply drifted back until he was leaning against the wall. After another long silence, Mom turned to look at him."Dorian put her up to this, didn't he? They're lying together.""They want me to stop talking about Rose from now on.""That calculating girl wants my love all to herself.""It must be that. It has to be.""Why w

It was not until noon that Mom finally Rosalie, swaying on her feet.Dad steadied her by the arm. They walked slowly, the two of them.Once in the car, they did not head home.Instead, they drove toward the Elder Hall.Dad drove the whole way in silence.Mom sat in the passenger seat, staring at the charm hanging from the rearview mirror.Set into it was a family portrait. One taken twenty years ago, of Dad and Mom and my sister together. The colors had faded to near white, yet the happiness on their faces showed through still. There were many photographs like that at home.Twenty years ago, my parents had taken hundreds of pictures with my sister.Of me, there were only a scattered few from childhood. And in every one, I had been dressed to look like her.A red ribbon tied in my hair, a long red dress on my body.Mom would not let me smile. So my expression was stiff and resistant.Mom did not like the results.Probably because no matter how she looked at them, I did not look enough l

When consciousness returned to me, I saw a girl lying on the balcony. The morning sun poured without reserve over her pale face.It took a long while before I understood. That girl was me.I was dead. The next instant, my soul was yanked away and pulled to my parents' side.Mom was bent over a gravestone, weeping.Buried here was my sister's cenotaph."Rose, twenty years now, and Mom still misses you so."So they had come to see my sister again. This monthly visit to the cemetery had never once been skipped, not since the day I was born. But they never brought me.At first I thought they were sneaking off somewhere for fun.Once I threw a tantrum and begged to come along.Mom turned and slapped me across the face. Her eyes were red as she demanded of me:"You have us every single day. Rose gets to see us only once a month.""And even this once you want to ruin it. How can any pup in this world be so selfish?"I went silent at once.I never dared to be needy again.Dad's hand moved towa
