Chapter 1

As the consigliere of the Romano family, I could more than afford the entire trip.

Matteo, however, wasn't nearly as wealthy. He was just a small-time caporegime whose earnings paled in comparison to mine. In fact, I was the financial backbone of his entire family.

I had spent an entire month researching and planning the perfect family getaway, yet no one had lifted a finger to help or contribute to the vacation budget. Still, none of that compared to the disappointment they had caused me today.

Maria Trebolt, my mother-in-law, showed me the list of everyone going on the trip. "Look! We're heading to Caspian Isola at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. It's a family event."

As she scrolled through the names, I saw Luca, Bianca, two nephews, and even Anna, the maid responsible for kitchen duties. My name was nowhere to be found.

Sophia walked over to us with a grin. "Did you find your name on there, madam?"

Almost everyone in the living room burst into laughter.

Matteo had always favored Sophia, whom he had known since childhood, but their relationship had grown increasingly intimate. Sophia had even rushed straight to him as soon as she learned about the family trip.

I stared in disbelief at the man who was supposed to be my husband and lifelong partner, but he wouldn't even meet my gaze. Instead, he simply smiled and chuckled at Sophia.

"Matteo! What the hell is the meaning of this? This is a family trip! Even if there were limited seats on the plane, how could you push me aside and give Sophia my spot?!" I demanded.

"She said she wanted to come. Of course I'd agree to that," he replied with an annoyed frown.

Matteo continued, "The number of people was fixed from the start. That's why we booked the yacht and hotel for that exact number, right?

"The problem was that there were no more seats available on the flight, and you were the only one we could leave out to make room for Sophia. What's so wrong with giving her that chance?

"Besides, Sophia doesn't want you around. You're a chronic killjoy, Camilla. You'd ruin the mood if you came along, and why would we want that?"

Sophia chuckled. "Unlike you, Camilla, I've known Matteo for years. We're very close. I've always been family to him, while you're just an outsider."

I almost laughed in furious disbelief. "I've spent an entire month planning this trip, Matteo! I've paid every vacation expense so far, and now you're just going to abandon me? You're leaving me out of a trip I've put so much time and effort into planning? Do you even care about me as your partner anymore?"

Maria interjected angrily, "You're out of line, Camilla. You have no right to question my son's decision.

"I've known Sophia since she was a child. It's obvious that my son considers her a closer friend than you've ever managed to be, so it makes perfect sense that he chose her. You have no grounds to argue!

"And that's not even to mention how you always rain on everyone's parade whenever we go on trips. You can never just let us relax and have fun! At least this time, without you around, we might actually enjoy ourselves!"

I sneered.

"Outsider, my ass. I'm his wife! She's nobody!" I snapped. "And perhaps you people should remember that I'm the one who's been financially supporting this family!"

"That's enough, Camilla! Who do you think you are? Are you just trying to get my attention? It's not going to work, so why don't you stop?!" Matteo exploded. "Sophia means a lot to me. If you're really my partner, you'd understand that and accommodate me!"

Sophia chimed in, "Exactly. You'll be perfectly fine at home alone, Camilla. You're super-duper competent and all that, aren't you? I'm sure you get plenty of opportunities to travel as the consigliere of a mafia family, too. You can afford to let me have this one, can't you?"

I felt as though I'd swallowed a rock.

I turned to my daughter and decided to make one last concession. "What about Lucia? Does she have a ticket?"

"Of course she's on the list," Maria answered immediately.

Lucia looked up from her toys. She glanced at her grandmother's phone and scowled. "But where's Mom's ticket?"

"Camilla is a good, understanding woman who knows better than to spoil our happy vacation," Bianca said with a snort. "Besides, she's always in such high demand! She probably shouldn't be taking time off work for a vacation like this anyway, right?"

"It's better if Camilla doesn't come. Someone has to look after the house while we're all away!" Sophia added.

I wasn't surprised. Of course, these buffoons had no idea what awaited them. I'd never been the type to advertise how many expenses I'd been covering. However, just because I didn't make a big fuss about them didn't mean they weren't essential to the Grieco family's lifestyle. Now, they finally knew just how much I'd done for them.…Another month passed. Matteo could no longer cope and called me from a new number."Camilla, can we please talk?" he begged, his voice hoarse."There's nothing to talk about," I replied."Look, I get it. I was wrong. But right now, Mom's sick, and the family's on the brink of financial collapse. Can you please at least lend me some money for now? Do it for Lucia. I'm her father too!"I snickered. "Oh, Matteo. Have you forgotten what you told me back then? You said I wouldn't be able to live without you and that I'd beg you to take me back."Funny enough, your prediction hasn't come true. My life is better than I could have imagined. Lucia's doing r

I moved into a modest villa near my family home with Lucia during the first month after my divorce.Meanwhile, Matteo watched his life spiral downward. In the past, I had shouldered every family expense, from the household staff's wages and the older family members' medical bills to the financial support Luca's family needed. I had even covered all the money Sophia kept borrowing from me.Matteo's salary had barely covered his own basic purchases, but nothing more. For the first month after our divorce, he managed to survive on his savings. Unfortunately, he had no source of income. No other mafia family would even consider dealing with him, much less accepting him into their ranks.By the second month, he started begging me for financial relief.Matteo: [Camilla, can I pay alimony a little later this month?]I ignored him, so he sent another message.Matteo: [All the household expenses have gone up. Could you cover them for now?]I snorted and blocked him.-A while later,

Now that I had shown my receipts, the crowd looked at Matteo with scorn."Don't you have any shame? You're a husband who relies entirely on his wife to pay for his vacations! Do you know how that looks?""You can't even match Camilla in status or financial standing!""Slandering Camilla is so low and despicable. She's never been inappropriately close to another man all these years. But you and your childhood friend? Anyone with half a brain would suspect something was going on between you!"Everyone was starting to take my side.Matteo grew increasingly desperate to defend himself, but their remarks only made his face paler. Finally, he turned to the Don and cried out, "You have to believe me, sir! Camilla has a serious flaw in her character. She doesn't even deserve her position as consigliere, let alone the money she makes!"The man sneered, "No one beneath me has ever had the right to tell me whom to hire or fire, and you're nothing but an ant to me. I could fire you whenever

"Consigliere, explain yourself," the Don finally said.Matteo turned to him. "Don, my wife misappropriated the family's money, deliberately ruined our trip, and cheated on me!"The man frowned. "What's going on?"Rather than panic and try to explain myself, I took everything out of the folder."Please take a look at what I'm about to show you. These are all the receipts and statements for the vacation expenses I've paid so far, from the yacht charter and hotel bookings to the flights."You can see my name on every single payment record. This here is a record of how much money Matteo actually earned over the past three years, as well as how much I transferred to the Grieco family every month to cover their daily expenses."And finally, this is proof that Sophia borrowed 20,000 dollars from me last year. Interestingly enough, she still hasn't repaid a cent," I finished before playing one of the recordings.Sophia's wonderfully shrill, profanity-laden verbal abuse echoed through th

"You finally picked up!" Matteo shouted. "We've got trouble with the outstanding bill for the luxury cruise… and the hotel, too. Mom's running out of money to pay for all of this!"I sneered, "And?"Matteo paused for a moment. When he finally responded, he sounded embarrassed. "Can you please transfer some money to cover what we owe, honey? We can talk about all of this when I get back."I snickered. "None of you remembered me when my name was crossed off the list. Those receipts and bills really jogged your memories, huh?"Matteo's breathing quickened. "God, can you please stop being so petty? All we did was leave you out of a vacation! How does that justify humiliating us in front of everyone at the harbor?!"You're a whiz at planning, right? This is literally your bread and butter! Not to mention, you were the one in charge of the payments!"I swear, you're deliberately making things difficult just to embarrass Maria!""But I don't see why I should pay. It's not even that I'm

Meanwhile, Sophia started recording a video as soon as she arrived.Sophia aimed the camera at Maria. "Smile, Madam! Now that Camilla isn't here, we can actually have some fun!"Maria had been fighting the constant urge to throw up since they boarded the yacht, but she still forced herself to straighten her back and flash a peace sign at the camera.Luca was still lugging his suitcase around, muttering, "God, I should have brought fewer things with me. Now that Camilla isn't here, who's gonna watch my bags for me?!"Anna had to support Georgio Grieco, Matteo's father, with one hand while she held a glass of water in the other. She was already sweating from the effort, but Sophia turned the camera on her and laughed. "See? We've got Anna with us, and she's way better at all this than Camilla!"That made Maria feel a little better. She tightened her grip on her phone. However, when they arrived at the hotel, they quickly realized their optimism had been premature. The receptionis
