Chapter 3

Author: Money Meow
Sophia had updated her social media status and tagged me in the caption: [Everyone, put your hands together and say thank you to @camillacaramel for sponsoring this vacation for us!]

Some mutual friends left comments.

[But where is Camilla?]

[She's too busy with work to join us. Besides, she says she doesn't like getting a tan, so she declined our invitation!] Bianca replied.

Sophia added: [She was very insistent about not joining us. We couldn't change her mind.]

I was cutting fresh fruit into bite-sized pieces at the time. I ignored the comments, but Lucia's hands were shaking as she read them.

"Mooom! You gotta respond and tell them none of that is true!"

I handed her a fruit fork. "Have some apple slices."

"But they're lying! They're lying about you!"

I smiled and pinched her cheeks.

She looked at me in confusion and asked, "You're not mad?"

"No. They don't deserve my attention, not even the negative kind."

…

The next morning, the Grieco family gathered outside with their suitcases.

Maria wore her new floral dress and waved at the camera. "Time to go!"

Bianca pushed her sons to the foreground. "Quick, thank your grandma for taking you to Caspian Isola!"

Sophia took a group photo with her selfie stick, careful to include part of my bedroom window in the frame. She then tagged me in the photo with the caption: [No one in the family gets left behind on a vacation like this!]

Even Anna, the maid, was grinning from ear to ear, with her new sunbonnet perched on her head.

Later that day, Sophia uploaded another photo of the family at the harbor and tagged me again.

Sophia: [Thanks for taking care of the house while we're away! We'll definitely bring you gifts, @camillacaramel!]

Comments soon flooded in beneath the photo.

[Camilla is such a generous soul.]

[It's actually a good thing she's not going! Someone has to take care of the house!]

…

Lucia stormed into the kitchen with her phone.

After I saw the comments, I packed a bag and left with Lucia for my childhood home.

On the way, Lucia rested her head against my arm and asked, "Mom, was it wrong of me not to go?"

I ruffled her hair. "If you want to see the sea, sweetie, I'll take you there someday. Just the two of us."

She sniffled. "Okay, Mom. And I wanna stay in a room with a window overlooking the ocean."

"No problem." I held her hand and stared out the window, my heart heavy.

I had been Matteo's wife for eleven years. I had learned to brew my father-in-law's favorite coffee, tended to my mother-in-law's every need, wired money to Luca whenever he needed it, and always made sure I was the last to take a seat at family gatherings.

But I should never have had to do any of that. My status was far higher than theirs. My husband was merely a capo. When I first married him, everyone said we were mismatched in status and that I could have chosen someone better. But I hadn't. I had been patient. I had endured.

And in the end, my reward was to be deemed so unimportant that Sophia could replace me on a family vacation. They truly treated me as though I had never been part of the family at all.

…

We arrived at my family's estate.

When my mother opened the door and saw Lucia, her eyes reddened. She silently took my bag and asked, "Are you hungry, Camilla?"

I changed into my bedroom slippers and settled onto a familiar little stool. I could feel myself relax. "I'm ravenous."

"What would you like?"

In the end, we asked the cook to prepare something simple but filling and ate lunch in front of the TV.

My phone kept vibrating inside my handbag, so I took it out. The family group chat was practically overflowing with messages from the usual suspects.

I ignored the notifications without reading a single message, then switched off my phone.

Lucia took it from me of her own accord and shoved it under a cushion. "You don't need to check your phone, Mom. No one has the right to bother you."

My mother ladled more chowder into my bowl. "You can take a nap after lunch, sweetie. Nothing's gonna happen, so don't worry."

After we finished eating, Lucia rested her head on my shoulder as we watched TV. The comedy show was loud and lively, but I found the entire afternoon remarkably peaceful.

I tucked her hair behind her ear and asked, "Sleepy yet?"

She shook her head, then nodded. "You can take a nap, Mom. I'll protect you."

I laughed and pulled her into my arms. "You're just a baby. How are you gonna protect me?"

"Well, however I can, I'm on your side."

I closed my eyes and rested a hand on her back.

My phone had finally gone silent. Good. I was done talking to them.

I curled up on the couch and pulled an old blanket up to my chin. Its sun-kissed scent surrounded me as I drifted off to sleep.

I wasn't surprised. Of course, these buffoons had no idea what awaited them. I'd never been the type to advertise how many expenses I'd been covering. However, just because I didn't make a big fuss about them didn't mean they weren't essential to the Grieco family's lifestyle. Now, they finally knew just how much I'd done for them.…Another month passed. Matteo could no longer cope and called me from a new number."Camilla, can we please talk?" he begged, his voice hoarse."There's nothing to talk about," I replied."Look, I get it. I was wrong. But right now, Mom's sick, and the family's on the brink of financial collapse. Can you please at least lend me some money for now? Do it for Lucia. I'm her father too!"I snickered. "Oh, Matteo. Have you forgotten what you told me back then? You said I wouldn't be able to live without you and that I'd beg you to take me back."Funny enough, your prediction hasn't come true. My life is better than I could have imagined. Lucia's doing r

I moved into a modest villa near my family home with Lucia during the first month after my divorce.Meanwhile, Matteo watched his life spiral downward. In the past, I had shouldered every family expense, from the household staff's wages and the older family members' medical bills to the financial support Luca's family needed. I had even covered all the money Sophia kept borrowing from me.Matteo's salary had barely covered his own basic purchases, but nothing more. For the first month after our divorce, he managed to survive on his savings. Unfortunately, he had no source of income. No other mafia family would even consider dealing with him, much less accepting him into their ranks.By the second month, he started begging me for financial relief.Matteo: [Camilla, can I pay alimony a little later this month?]I ignored him, so he sent another message.Matteo: [All the household expenses have gone up. Could you cover them for now?]I snorted and blocked him.-A while later,

Now that I had shown my receipts, the crowd looked at Matteo with scorn."Don't you have any shame? You're a husband who relies entirely on his wife to pay for his vacations! Do you know how that looks?""You can't even match Camilla in status or financial standing!""Slandering Camilla is so low and despicable. She's never been inappropriately close to another man all these years. But you and your childhood friend? Anyone with half a brain would suspect something was going on between you!"Everyone was starting to take my side.Matteo grew increasingly desperate to defend himself, but their remarks only made his face paler. Finally, he turned to the Don and cried out, "You have to believe me, sir! Camilla has a serious flaw in her character. She doesn't even deserve her position as consigliere, let alone the money she makes!"The man sneered, "No one beneath me has ever had the right to tell me whom to hire or fire, and you're nothing but an ant to me. I could fire you whenever

"Consigliere, explain yourself," the Don finally said.Matteo turned to him. "Don, my wife misappropriated the family's money, deliberately ruined our trip, and cheated on me!"The man frowned. "What's going on?"Rather than panic and try to explain myself, I took everything out of the folder."Please take a look at what I'm about to show you. These are all the receipts and statements for the vacation expenses I've paid so far, from the yacht charter and hotel bookings to the flights."You can see my name on every single payment record. This here is a record of how much money Matteo actually earned over the past three years, as well as how much I transferred to the Grieco family every month to cover their daily expenses."And finally, this is proof that Sophia borrowed 20,000 dollars from me last year. Interestingly enough, she still hasn't repaid a cent," I finished before playing one of the recordings.Sophia's wonderfully shrill, profanity-laden verbal abuse echoed through th

"You finally picked up!" Matteo shouted. "We've got trouble with the outstanding bill for the luxury cruise… and the hotel, too. Mom's running out of money to pay for all of this!"I sneered, "And?"Matteo paused for a moment. When he finally responded, he sounded embarrassed. "Can you please transfer some money to cover what we owe, honey? We can talk about all of this when I get back."I snickered. "None of you remembered me when my name was crossed off the list. Those receipts and bills really jogged your memories, huh?"Matteo's breathing quickened. "God, can you please stop being so petty? All we did was leave you out of a vacation! How does that justify humiliating us in front of everyone at the harbor?!"You're a whiz at planning, right? This is literally your bread and butter! Not to mention, you were the one in charge of the payments!"I swear, you're deliberately making things difficult just to embarrass Maria!""But I don't see why I should pay. It's not even that I'm

Meanwhile, Sophia started recording a video as soon as she arrived.Sophia aimed the camera at Maria. "Smile, Madam! Now that Camilla isn't here, we can actually have some fun!"Maria had been fighting the constant urge to throw up since they boarded the yacht, but she still forced herself to straighten her back and flash a peace sign at the camera.Luca was still lugging his suitcase around, muttering, "God, I should have brought fewer things with me. Now that Camilla isn't here, who's gonna watch my bags for me?!"Anna had to support Georgio Grieco, Matteo's father, with one hand while she held a glass of water in the other. She was already sweating from the effort, but Sophia turned the camera on her and laughed. "See? We've got Anna with us, and she's way better at all this than Camilla!"That made Maria feel a little better. She tightened her grip on her phone. However, when they arrived at the hotel, they quickly realized their optimism had been premature. The receptionis
