Chapter 6

Author: Serena Waters
"Find out where she went," Nate snapped. "She's disabled—how far could she possibly go?"

"Mr. Davidson, I've looked everywhere," his assistant said nervously. "There's no trace of Madam anywhere."

Nate's face darkened. "What do you mean, no trace? She's a living person—what, did she vanish into thin air? Keep looking!"

The assistant hesitated, lowering his voice. "Mr. Davidson… it's like someone erased her existence completely."

At those words, Nate grabbed the bouquet on the table—the flowers he'd sent to Lucy earlier that day—and hurled them to the ground.

Lucy had never seen him lose his temper like this. Startled, she asked, "Nate, what happened?"

Nate rubbed his temples, his voice tired. "Ruby's gone."

A flicker of joy flashed through Lucy's eyes. She hadn't expected me to leave so suddenly, but she had long wished I would disappear from this world.

Still, she put on a worried expression and said softly, "Maybe Ruby is just hiding because she's afraid you'll blame her for

Meanwhile, I stepped off the plane and walked toward my mentor. My phone number had been deactivated, so I had no way of knowing how many times Nate had tried to call.My mentor, aware of my difficulty walking, had been waiting at the airport for me since early morning. When he saw me again after so many years, his gaze instinctively fell to my legs. He couldn't help but sigh.I caught the subtle sheen in his eyes and understood instantly—it was pain. For me.I drew in a deep breath of fresh air, savoring the clarity of it, the sense of steering my life without anyone else's hand on the wheel. This time, no interference. I could finally do what I truly wanted.I hugged my mentor tightly. He patted my shoulder with strength, as if trying to pass courage and energy into me."Ruby," he said, "now that you're back, live well. Work hard."I met his eyes and nodded with quiet resolve. He brought me back to the institute. Everyone knew I was a dancer—one of the best. What they didn'

After I disappeared, Nate tried contacting every single person I had ever known.Even those living overseas—he went to find them too.But they all shook their heads and told him, with a trace of regret, "I'm sorry, I don't know anyone by that name."Overnight, his Ruby had vanished from the world.Everyone insisted that such a person never existed. But how could he erase his memories? He had protected and cared for me all those years—how could someone now tell him it was all an illusion? How was he supposed to accept that? When he visited the last person on his list, he looked at them, hope shining in his eyes, praying that maybe, just maybe, they could give him the answer he so desperately wanted. In the beginning, he had hoped someone would simply tell him where I was. Now, all he wanted was confirmation that I had once existed. But just like every other time, the same answer came, "I'm sorry, sir. I really don't know the person you're talking about."And with that, somethin

Lucy felt a warm stream spread beneath her. She knew—it was the life of her child slowly slipping away."Please… please save my baby," she begged. But Nate didn't respond.Over the years, Lucy had leaned heavily on his affection, asking for countless things, always expecting him to yield. But not this time.He stood there, expression cold, as if every mistake were hers alone and he himself had never done wrong.Hatred burned in her eyes as she spoke, "You think you're so noble, like all of this is my fault, don't you? Tell me—was I the one who told you to run over Ruby and her mother? Sure, she survived, but she's disabled for life. You say it was all for me, but did I ever ask you to kill someone?"You're just shifting all the blame to me so you can keep pretending you're a decent man. You had so many chances to make things right. But no, you only realize all the gravity of those things you did after Ruby left you, and now you take it out on everyone around you. You think that's

Nate's secretary watched over Nate for more than half a month.Every day, despite his crippled legs from the beating, Nate dragged himself out of bed, trying to go out and search for me.His secretary tried to stop him, but couldn't.Meanwhile, his business—left unattended for too long—was starting to fall apart. My private investigator kept me updated on everything happening on Nate's end.I knew the time had come. All the evidence had been gathered.Running my fingers over the keepsakes my mother had left behind, I whispered, "Mom, I will take revenge for you."I cut off the long hair I had kept for years, then walked into Lucy's hospital room.Anyone who had hurt my mother—none of them would be spared.Lucy now needed an oxygen tube to breathe.I walked up and sat by her bed, staring at her face—pale as a sheet of paper. There was nothing left of her former radiance."Lucy," I said, "it's been a while."She opened her eyes at the sound of my voice."Ruby? What are you

Nate dropped to his knees in front of me, tears streaming down his face. "Ruby… is it really you?"I took a step back. I didn't want him to touch me. He didn't deserve to.His eyes lit up with disbelief and joy."Your legs… they're healed. I knew there had to be a reason you left. You were getting treatment, weren't you? You just didn't want me to worry. You were planning a surprise for me, right?"Nate tried to reach out and hug me, but the police stepped in to block him."Mr. Davidson, we need you to come with us."He struggled, refusing to get in the squad car. "I'm not going! I want to go home with my wife!"I finally spoke. "Nate, there's nothing between us anymore. But there will be." He looked at me, eyes wide, full of hope. "You mean… you're willing to forgive me?"I let out a cold laugh. "As plaintiff and defendant. Nate, I've filed charges against you."His head dropped in defeat as the police placed the cuffs on him and led him away.At the station, the evidence

In the study, Nate Davidson stared at a photo of Lucy Langdon with a tenderness that overflowed with love and regret."As long as Lucy is happy now, that's enough for me," he said quietly.Beside him, the secretary sighed and asked, almost helplessly, "Mr. Davidson, aren't you afraid your wife will find out you were the one who arranged the car accident? And back then, her legs were perfectly fine. You had her injected with that drug—just so Lucy could win the dance competition."Nate paused for a second, then let out a bitter smile. "It's all in the past now. I'll spend the rest of my life taking care of Ruby. That's my promise."The secretary frowned, confused. "You gave Lucy away to another man, and even sacrifice the driver's life. Was it really worth it? And… your wife's mother's death anniversary is just around the corner. Shouldn't you at least—""Enough! Don't say another word!" Nate cut him off, voice sharp with anger. My hands trembled. The coffee cup I was holding slip

The doctor came and gave me a check-up. What he said next caught all of us off guard."Mr. Davidson, your wife is three months pregnant."The room fell silent for a second. Everyone looked stunned. This child—I had waited for this child for so many years, and yet it chose now to arrive. I turned to Nate, searching his eyes for something—anything—but all I saw there was love. Unwavering, undiluted love."We're finally having a child, Ruby," he said, his voice full of joy as he embraced me.Then, without wasting a second, he ordered the doctor to prepare a complete prenatal care plan. He turned to the servants and barked orders."Take good care of Madam. Make sure nothing goes wrong. Not even a little."Everyone around us looked at me with envy. Over the years, they'd watched how much Nate loved me."Pass down the word," he added. "Once the child is born, all my shares in the company will go to my child."The secretary looked shocked. "Mr. Davidson, are you sure...""What ar

Nate's eyes were red—anyone could see he'd been crying. The moment he saw I was awake, he pulled me into his arms, holding me as if I might slip away. His voice trembled. "I'm sorry, Ruby. I couldn't protect our child."He paused, took a shaky breath. "The doctor said the baby had congenital issues. That's why... the miscarriage happened."His hand moved gently over my back, slow and rhythmic, as though he could soothe the loss out of me. "Don't be sad, Ruby. We'll have another child. We will."I felt a dampness spread across my shoulder—his tears soaking into my gown.Everything felt unreal. Just yesterday, I'd uncovered the truth: he was the reason behind my car accident, the one who'd shattered my life, stolen my ability to dance. And now, he had taken my child too.Was he my lover? Or my executioner?Grief surged through me, thick and suffocating, like drowning in a sea with no surface in sight."Ruby, what's wrong?" he asked, alarmed. He rushed out and returned moments la

Afterward, I headed to the orthopedic department. All these years, it had always been Nate's private doctor treating me. Back then, when I was first diagnosed with a lifelong disability, not once did I question whether Nate had played a part in it.But thinking back now—every time I started to feel something in my leg, even the slightest sensation, he would immediately act overjoyed and call for the private doctor. Now I realize—each time he did that, the doctor would somehow make things worse. After a thorough check-up, the doctor looked at me with a strange expression and said, "Your legs are indeed disabled, but something doesn't add up. From what I can see, it looks like someone has been administering medication to keep them this way."He paused, then continued, "But it's been so many years. Your leg muscles have long since atrophied. Still, if you're willing to endure the pain and commit to training, there's a small chance you might be able to stand again."The possibility a

The moment she called me a cripple, I couldn't take it anymore.I could ignore her flaunting Nate's love and pretend it didn't matter. But the second she mentioned my leg, it felt like someone had reached inside me and torn my heart apart.I shouted, "Lucy, what right do you have to call me that? If it weren't for you, I never would've lost my chance to dance! And don't you dare bring up my mother!"Just as Lucy was about to hurl something else at me, a voice came from outside the room.It was Nate.Apparently, he hadn't been able to find Lucy anywhere else, so he came to my ward. The moment she heard his voice, Lucy collapsed to the floor, tears streaming down her face like a well-rehearsed performance."Nate! Help me!"Nate burst into the room the second he heard her cry for help. When he saw her lying on the ground, her cheeks wet with tears, he immediately called for a doctor."Thank god you came," she whimpered, clinging to her stomach.
